A new species of majid crab, Sakaija amicitiae n. sp., is described from New Caledonia Exclusive Economic Zone, Vauban seamount and the Chesterfield Atolls. The species is superficially similar to S. japonica (Rathbun, 1932) and S. santo Ng & Richer de Forges, 2015, from Vanuatu. Specimens from New Caladonia previously referred to S. santo are now referred to the new species. Sakaija amicitiae n. sp. can be distinguished from congeners by features of the carapace spines, proportions of the ambulatory legs and structure of the male first gonopod.

Three species of the sponge-dwelling lobster Eiconaxius are known from the eastern Pacific. Previous reports and descriptions were based on dead specimens. During a study by remotely operated vehicle, Eiconaxius baja was photographed in situ at the San Juan Seamount within a sponge of the family Phariidae. It tried to escape by swimming backward. Illuminated by the lights of the vehicle, the lobster had an orange color. The depth at which the lobster lives has no ambient light, so the function of the color remains uncertain.

The GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2017 (IDP2017) is the second publicly available data product of the international GEOTRACES programme, and contains data measured and quality controlled before the end of 2016. The IDP2017 includes data from the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Southern and Indian oceans, with about twice the data volume of the previous IDP2014. For the first time, the IDP2017 contains data for a large suite of biogeochemical parameters as well as aerosol and rain data characterising atmospheric trace element and isotope (TEI) sources. The TEI data in the IDP2017 are quality controlled by careful assessment of intercalibration results and multi-laboratory data comparisons at crossover stations. The IDP2017 consists of two parts: (1) a compilation of digital data for more than 450 TEIs as well as standard hydrographic parameters, and (2) the eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas providing an on-line atlas that includes more than 590 section plots and 130 animated 3D scenes. The digital data are provided in several formats, including ASCII, Excel spreadsheet, netCDF, and Ocean Data View collection. Users can download the full data packages or make their own custom selections with a new on-line data extraction service. In addition to the actual data values, the IDP2017 also contains data quality flags and 1-σ data error values where available. Quality flags and error values are useful for data filtering and for statistical analysis. Metadata about data originators, analytical methods and original publications related to the data are linked in an easily accessible way. The eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas is the visual representation of the IDP2017 as section plots and rotating 3D scenes. The basin-wide 3D scenes combine data from many cruises and provide quick overviews of large-scale tracer distributions. These 3D scenes provide geographical and bathymetric context that is crucial for the interpretation and assessment of tracer plumes near ocean margins or along ridges. The IDP2017 is the result of a truly international effort involving 326 researchers from 25 countries. This publication provides the critical reference for unpublished data, as well as for studies that make use of a large cross-section of data from the IDP2017. Yield stress fluids, which show reversible gel–sol transition and a decrease in viscosity via shear, are expected for endoscopic applications. However, quantitative analyses of such fluids, including pressure drop during endoscopic catheter delivery and post-delivery dripping, have not yet been conducted from a chemical engineering perspective. In this study, we fabricated an equipment setup comprising an endoscopic catheter and a model gastrointestinal (GI) duct to which different concentrations of three model yield stress fluids, specifically, laponite (LAP), Carbopol (CP), and xanthan gum (XG), were applied and compared. We clarified the tradeoff between the pressure drop through the catheter and dripping on the GI duct model. In terms of operability, LAP performed better than CP and XG. The effect of gravity on dripping, which is greatly affected by the position of a patient, was discussed. Finally, the relationship between the operability and rheological properties such as viscosity, yield stress, and restructuring time of the three materials were quantitatively studied.

In this study, nanocomposites of ligand-free gold nanoparticles that are anchored onto the graphene surface (Graphene/AuNPs) were synthesized by a sonochemical method in a single reaction step. A highly sensitive amperometric sensor using Graphene/AuNPs is proposed for the determination of trace hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) in environmental water samples. Compared with a gold electrode, a glassy carbon electrode and a AuNPs modified glassy carbon electrode, the Graphene/AuNPs modified glassy carbon electrode exhibits the highest electrocatalytic activity and stability towards the reduction of Cr(VI), based on the results by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical AC impedance studies. This study shows that the Graphene/AuNPs-based sensor can detect Cr(VI) with a low detection limit of 10 nM (∼0.5 μg/L), a wide dynamic range of 0 to 20 μM (R = 0.999) and very good selectivity and reproducibility. The electrode is applied to the determination of Cr(VI) in river samples with satisfactory recovery values.

The right forelimb of a western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) was dissected with particular attention to the motor function of fingers of this species. The anatomical structure of the forearm and hand of our specimen of gorilla is not much different from that of the human. The palmar aponeurosis is absent. Ligamentous fibers, instead, extend to the palm from the flexor retinaculum to form the ligamentous septa along the flexor tendons. The short thumb seems to be carefully calculated to fulfill both roles of locomotion and feeding. The underdeveloped flexor pollicis longus muscle bifurcates from the flexor digitorum profundus muscle of the index finger. The extensor indicis is also underdeveloped; its tendon does not reach the index finger but attaches to the wrist. The extensor apparatus of the fingers composed of both the extrinsic and intrinsic systems is as well developed as in the human hand. During knuckle walking with the metacarpophalangeal joints in extension and the proximal interphalangeal joints in deep flexion, the former joint of each finger seems to be stabilized with integrated functions of the finger extensor, interosseous and lumbrical muscles, and sagittal bands as well as the groove at the metacarpal head. The ulnar antebrachial branch of the median nerve with a fine motor communicating branch from the ulnar nerve innervates the ulnar intrinsic muscles of the hand, which are innervated by the deep branch of the ulnar nerve in the human.

The Ultraviolet Imager aboard Suisei, the first Japanese interplanetary spacecraft, successfully ended ist mission by continuously observing the Ly α intensities of comet Halley. The major findings obtained from these observations are as follows : 1) Strong short-term variation of the Ly α intensities of comet Halley; Such a rapid variation was quite unexpected in the knowledge of the past Ly α observations of comet. In relation to this variation, an accurate determination of the rotation period of this comet was attempted (52.9 hours). 2) The first measurement of the Ly α intensities from within a thick hydrogen cloud of comet. While the intensity distribution as a function of the distance from the nucleus approximately follows that predicted by the Haser model, it is also compatible with the jet repetition model. 3) Existence of a fine structure in the above photometry data, which possibly represents local enhancements of the atomic hydrogen density. 4) Brightness variation within one rotational period was pursued, producing an outburst occurrence diagram. The rapid variation of the Ly α intensities as observed suggests that in an outburst event there must be involved a small amount of hydrogen-containing molecules whose photodissociation lifetimes are quite short. 5) The observed images are brighter (overally twice) than those expected from the nominal model by IACC/WG.

本論文は, ハレー彗星探査機「すいせい」に搭載された太陽風観測装置の最初の2ヶ月間のイオン観測をまとめたものである。探査機はハレー彗星への巡行中であり, 最接近に向けて太陽風そのものの観測を行っている。現在は太陽活動極小期にあるため, 太陽風の状態は太陽自転に同期した典型的な変動を示している。観測器の性能は予期した以上のものを発揮し, H^+とHe^<++>の区別は勿論, O^<+6>, Si^<+7>, Si^<+8>等, 極微量成分の弁別まで可能である。これら重粒子イオンは太陽コロナの情報をもたらす貴重なデータであり, 特に低速度の太陽風で明瞭に観測されている。又, 太陽風のミクロな物理現象として, アルヴェン波やプロトンの温度異方性の存在も見出された。さらに, 流速が低速から高速に変化する時に速度ベクトルが西向きに大きく変化することも判った。これは低速域に高速流が追いついてきたときの相互作用によって生じたものと考えられる。

食用ソラマメの生育と窒素含有量および収量に対する土壌塩類, 窒素施肥の影響をポット条件下で調査した. 塩類濃度は, 乾土当り 0.18, 0.30, 0.45, 0.60%の4水準を設け, 0.18%のものを対照区とした. 窒素施肥については, 1ポット4 kgの土壌に対して窒素成分として 0, 25, 50, 75 mg添加の4水準を設けた. 得られた結果は次の通りである. 1. 乾物重, 窒素含有量, 子実収量, 茎重, 個体当り莢数, 個体当り子実蛋白量は, 塩類濃度0.30%は促進的であったが, その他の塩類濃度では, 濃度が高まるにつれて抑制的であった. 百粒重, 子実蛋白含有率に対しては, 対照区に比べて全ての塩類濃度が抑制的に作用した. 2. 個体当り子実収量, 百粒重並びに開花前期と英形成期における乾物重については, それぞれの平均値が窒素施肥によって増加した. 3. 植物体窒素含有量, 個体当り莢数並びに子実蛋白含有量は, 窒素施肥によって増加し, 莢充実期と成熟期では 50mgの窒素施用が最も促進的であった. 4. 開花前期と莢充実期の植物体乾物重は, 最終子実収量と有意の高い正の相関が認められた. 5. 子実生産の効率は, 窒素施用量の増加にともなって高まった. これらの結果から, a) 塩類濃度 0.45%は, ソラマメの生育にとって限界濃度であり, b) 根粒菌種子接種に併用する窒素施肥は, 可給態窒素含量の低い土壌で最大収量を得るために有効であると結論された.

Anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) is a surgical procedure for drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy that is commonly performed in human medicine. The purpose of this study was to determine whether ATL-like surgery, i.e., removal of the amygdala and hippocampal head, is possible in dogs, and to investigate its safety and postoperative complications. Eight healthy beagles underwent ATL-like surgery and were observed for 3 months postoperatively. Samples from the surgically resected tissues and postmortem brain were evaluated pathologically. The surgical survival rate was 62.5%. The major postoperative complications were visual impairment, temporal muscle atrophy on the operative side, and a postoperative acute symptomatic seizure. Due to the anatomical differences between dogs and humans, the surgically resected area to approach the medial temporal structures in dogs was the ventrolateral part of the temporal lobe. Therefore, the ATL-like surgery described in this study was named “ventrolateral temporal lobectomy” (VTL). This study is the first report of temporal lobectomy including amygdalohippocampectomy in veterinary medicine and demonstrates its feasibility. Although it requires some degree of skill, VTL could be a treatment option for canine drug-resistant epilepsy and lesions in the mesial temporal lobe.

Meningioma is the most common primary brain tumor in cats, although there are few reports about their pathological features. To investigate the histopathological subtypes and immunohistochemical features including expression of cytokeratin and cell adhesion molecules, 45 cases of feline meningioma were examined. The mean age was 12.5 years (range 6–21 years). No statistically significant sex predilection was observed. Regarding the anatomical location of meningioma, tumors mostly developed in the cerebrum, followed by spinal cord and cerebellum, and multiple meningioma was observed in one cat. Microscopically, linear or focal mineralization was observed in 40 cases and cholesterol cleft was observed in 14 cases. Based on histopathological subtypes, there were 15 fibrous, 22 transitional, 2 meningothelial, 5 atypical, and 1 anaplastic meningiomas. These subtypes are classified into grade 1 (39 cases), grade 2 (5 cases), and grade 3 (1 case). There was no significant difference in the Ki-67 index among histological subtypes or grades. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin in 5 cases (12.8%), vimentin in 17 cases (43.6%), E-cadherin in 36 cases (92.3%), β-catenin in 21 cases (53.8%), and N-cadherin in 1 case (2.6%), demonstrating the utility of E-cadherin-immunohistochemistry for the diagnosis of feline meningiomas.
