Imaging of thermal radiation with a spatial resolution below the diffraction limit is demonstrated with a passive millimeter-wave microscope. This technique utilizes a sensitive radiometric receiver in combination with a scanning near-field microscope. Experiments were performed at 50 GHz (λ = 6 mm) with sample temperatures ranging from room temperature down to 160 K, and the performance was shown to be superior to that achieved with passive imaging systems in the infrared region. The images are affected by non-uniformities in the transmission of thermal radiation from the sample to the receiver via the near-field probe and the reflection of thermal radiation back to the receiver from the probe. The effects of these non-uniformities were successfully removed using a sample image acquired by active measurements using a vector network analyzer.

Stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) made from high-temperature superconductors such as Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi-2212) (BSCCO) are a promising source of coherent continuous-wave terahertz radiation. It is thought that at electrical bias conditions under which THz-emission occurs, hot spots may form due to resistive self-heating, and that these spots may be highly beneficial for the generation of high levels of THz power. Here, we perform an imaging study of the temperature distribution at the surface of BSCCO stacks utilizing the temperature-dependent 612 nm fluorescence line of Eu3+ in a europium chelate. The images directly reveal a highly non-uniform temperature distribution in which the temperature in the middle of the stack can exceed the superconducting transition temperature by tens of Kelvin under biasing conditions typical for THz-emission.

We calculate the relative abundance of the radioactive isotopes Iodine-131 and Cesium-137 produced by nuclear fission in reactors and compare it with data taken at the troubled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. The ratio of radioactivities of these two isotopes can be used to obtain information about when the nuclear reactions terminated.

We propose a new method to project n-dimensional data onto two dimensions, for visualization purposes. Our goal is to produce a bi-dimensional representation that better separate existing clusters. Accordingly, to generate this projection we apply Differential Evolution as a meta-heuristic to optimize a divergence measure of the projected data. This divergence measure is based on the Cauchy–Schwartz divergence, extended for multiple classes. It accounts for the separability of the clusters in the projected space using the Renyi entropy and Information Theoretical Clustering analysis. We test the proposed method on two synthetic and five real world data sets, obtaining well separated projected clusters in two dimensions. These results were compared with results generated by PCA and a recent likelihood based visualization method.

Optical manipulation of the magnetic anisotropy is demonstrated for bilayered manganites, La2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7, by means of femtosecond Kerr-rotation measurements. Upon the photoexcitation on the x=0.32 crystal, the magnetization exhibits the precessional motion for about 1 ns, revealing the directional change of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy from the c axis to the ab plane. This change of the anisotropy induces the nonthermal decrease of the c-axis magnetization component for about 1 ns.

The photoinduced effect on the orbital-ordered phase in perovskite-type LaVO3 has been investigated by femtosecond time-resolved reflection spectroscopy. Large reflectivity change has been observed immediately after photoirradiation. The spectral shape and polarization dependence of the reflectivity change indicate the melting of the orbital order induced by photoexcitation. The photocarriers annihilate in about 200 fs, and the orbital order partially recovers owing to thermalization with the lattice in 2–4 ps.

Self-trapped-exciton (STE) luminescence of quasi-one-dimensional halogen-bridged platinum complex [Pt(en)2] [Pt(en)2Cl2] (ClO4)4 is investigated by femtosecond time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy. In the high energy tail of the luminescence band, a fast rise and decay are seen, whereas around the luminescence peak energy a slow rise of about 500 fs is observed. This rise becomes faster at the low energy side of the band. These results are consistently explained by the cooling of prethermalized STEs, following the rapid self-trapping which is estimated to occur within 140 fs.

We report on measurement of the electron-hole effective g-factors (geff*) depending on electron filling factors ν from magnetophotoluminescence spectroscopy at low magnetic fields B<1 T in low electron density regime in a GaAs/Al0.33Ga0.67As-gated quantum well. Enhancement of geff* at odd ν is observed. The oscillatory behavior of geff* is compared with results of a theory that takes into account the lowest-order exchange interaction of the screened Coulomb interaction. Good agreement of the observed geff* with theoretical results is obtained except ν at around 3. The enhancement of geff* at even ν with decrease in electron density has not been observed.

A 180-nm-thick boron (B) layer was deposited on a 300-nm-thick a-axis-oriented BaSi2 epitaxial film grown by molecular beam epitaxy on Si(111) and was annealed at different temperatures in ultrahigh vacuum. The depth profiles of B were investigated using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) with O2+, and the diffusion coefficients of B were evaluated. The B profiles were reproduced well by taking both the lattice and the grain boundary (GB) diffusions into consideration. The cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image revealed that the GBs of the BaSi2 film were very sharp and normal to the sample surface. The plan-view TEM image exhibited that the grain size of the BaSi2 film was approximately 0.6 μm. The temperature dependence of lattice and GB diffusion coefficients was derived from the SIMS profiles, and their activation energies were found to be 4.6 eV and 4.4 eV, respectively.

B-doped p-BaSi2 layer growth by molecular beam epitaxy and the influence of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) on hole concentrations were presented. The hole concentration was controlled in the range between 1017 and 1020 cm−3 at room temperature by changing the temperature of the B Knudsen cell crucible. The acceptor level of the B atoms was estimated to be approximately 23 meV. High hole concentrations exceeding 1 × 1020 cm−3 were achieved via dopant activation using RTA at 800 °C in Ar. The activation efficiency was increased up to 10%.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the alleviative effects of calciumacetate on defoliation and fruit drop induced by the spray of Ethephon (2-chloro-ethylphosphonic acid)solution which is used to accelerate the degreening of ponkan, Citrus reticulata Blanco, fruit. The effect of Figaron (Ethyl 5-chloro-1 H-3-indazolyl acetate) on degreening was also investigated.In experiment 1, a split-plot design was employed where the main plots consistedof three levels of Ethephon concentration (0, 200, 400, ppm) and six replicates, whilethe sub-plots consisted of four limbs designated to four levels of calcium acetateadded (0, 0.2, 1.5%). The spray treatment was done on November 1, and Ethephonand calcium acetate were mixed just before the spray application.Ethephon substantially increased defoliation and fruit drop, however, this wasalmost completely prevented by the addition of calcium acetate. Ethephon markedlyincreased the coloration of ponkan fruit. The addition of calcium acetate slightlydecreased the color acceleration, but the color was still considerably increased whencompared with the unsprayed control group.In experiment 2,200 ppm Ethephon with 1% calcium acetate and 200 ppmFigaron treatments were compared as a factorial combination consisting of fourtreatments. Figaron was sprayed on September 9, and Ethephon on November 4.No defoliation and fruit drop were observed in any treatment plots. Ethephonwith calcium acetate remarkably accelerated degreening and coloration of ponkanfruit. Figaron also appreciably improved fruit color but no additive effects ofEthephon and Figaron treatments were observed over Ethephon treatment alone.It is suggested that spraying 200 ppm Ethephon mixed with 1% calcium acetatein early November accelerates degreening and coloration without defoliation andfruit drop, and the method is commercially feasible.ポンカン(Citrus reticulata Blanco)果実の着色促進にエスレル(2-chloroethylphosphonic acid)を散布する際の,酢酸カルシウム混用による落葉・落果防止効果を検討した。またフィガロン(Ethyl 5-chloro-1 H-3-indazolylacetate)の着色促進効果も試験した。実験1では分割区法でエスレル濃度(0, 200, 400ppm)と酢酸カルシウム濃度(0, 0.2, 1, 5%)を組みあわせ,11月1日に散布した。高濃度のエスレルで落葉・落果が増加したが,酢酸カルシウムの混用により,落葉・落果が抑制された。エスレルによる着色は著しく促進されたが,酢酸カルシウムの混用はいく分その効果を弱めた。実験2では要因配置法で1%酢酸カルシウム混用200ppmエスレル散布,無散布と,200ppmフィガロン散布,無散布をくみあわせ,4処理の試験を行なった。フィガロンは9月9日,エスレルは11月4日に散布した。どの区でも落葉・落果はほとんど認められなかった。エスレルは着色を著しく促進した。フィガロンも着色を促進したがエスレルには劣った。エスレル,フィガロンともに果実中の糖やクエン酸含量に影響を及ぼさなかった。1%酢酸カルシウム混用200ppmエスレルの11月上旬散布がポンカンの着色促進のため実用化できると考えられる。

We introduce a modified tomographic PIV technique using four high-speed videocameras and a scanning pulsed laser-volume. By rapidly illuminating adjacent subvolumesonto separate video frames, we can resolve a larger total volume of velocityvectors, while retaining good spatial resolution. We demonstrate this technique byperforming time-resolved measurements of the turbulent structure of a round jet,using up to 9 adjacent volume slices. In essence this technique resolves more velocityplanes in the depth direction by maintaining optimal particle image density andlimiting the number of ghost particles. The total measurement volumes contain between1 ×106 and 3 ×106 velocity vectors calculated from up to 1500 reconstructeddepthwise image planes, showing time-resolved evolution of the large-scale vorticalstructures for a turbulent jet of Re up to 10 000.

Oral mucositis (OM) is a frequent adverse effect of allogenic or autologous hematopoietic SCT. It results from direct toxic injury to the mucosal epithelial cells by the immunosuppressive regimen. Here, we compared the incidence and severity of OM between a group of 24 patients who received proper oral management during hematopoietic SCT and a group of 24 who did not. The oral management group received pre-hematopoietic SCT instruction on oral care and an oral examination in the clean room. Differences in the incidence and severity of OM between the two groups were examined statistically. OM was observed in 14 (58.3%) patients in the oral management group and 22 (91.6%) in the control group. The median of the OM score was 1 for the oral management group (range 0 to 3) and 2 for the control group (range 0 to 3). There was a significant difference in the OM score (P<0.05) and in the incidence of OM between the two groups (P<0.01). This study shows that oral management may decrease the occurrence of OM. Our results also suggest that it is important to include an oral management provider on the hematopoietic SCT team.
