Efficiency of novel fiber formation was much improved in protoplast culture of embryogenic cells (ECs) of a conifer, Larix leptolepis (Sieb. et Zucc.) Gord., by pre-culturing ECs in a medium containing a high concentration of glutamine (13.7 mM). The fibrillar substructures of large and elongated fibers of protoplasts isolated from Larix ECs were investigated by laser confocal scanning microscopy (LCSM) after Aniline Blue staining and atomic force microscopy (AFM) using a micromanipulator without any pre-treatment. Fibers were composed of bundles of fibrils and subfibrils, whose diameters were defined as 0.7 and 0.17 mu m, respectively, by image analysis after LCSM and AFM. These fibers were proven to be composed of callose by using specific degrading enzymes for beta-1,4-glucan and beta-1,3-glucan.

It is necessary to obtain the data of some parameters concerning migration behavior of radionuclides in underground water for the safety assessment of radioactive waste disposal. Sorption and desorption experiments were carried out by using tracer amount of plutonium on biotite in a granitic rock. In this study, pH dependence of distribution coefficients of plutonium on a biotite mineral were measured. The following results are obtained; (1) The biotite has the pH buffer capacity at around pH 5. (2) Plutonium sorption rate was fast around pH 6 but slow at lower pH than 5. (3) The 95 percent of plutonium was sorbed on biotite at around pH 5. (4) The 10 to 30 percent of sorbed plutonium in biotite was desorbed with 1N KCl, the 50 to 60 percent with 1N HN0_3. (5) The rest of plutonium sorbed in biotite could not be desorbed even with 1N HN0_3. (6) The neutral plutonyl hydroxide could be an important species sorbed on the biotite.sorptionplutoniumbiotite

Unsteady, three-dimensional characteristics of vortex shedding were studied with self-made MEMS sensors situated spanwisely on a circular cylinder subjected to uniform incoming flow. Firstly, verification on the reliability of the MEMS sensor signals was made by comparing with the hot-wire signals obtained in the flow simultaneously. Subsequently, the MEMS sensor signals were analyzed with Wavelet and Hilbert transformations and 2D-FFT. By Wavelet and Hilbert transformations, the results obtained indicate that the strongly three-dimensional vortex shedding events are featured with pronounced spanwise variations in the instantaneous phases of vortex shedding, which are further identified as the occurrences of vortex dislocation. Furthermore, the results of 2D-FFT analysis reveal that the spanwise wave numbers of vortex shedding largely falls in a range between -2 to 2, for the MEMS sensors spanned over a spanwise region of 3 D in length.

The mechanism of the initialization-free phase-change optical disk was discussed. The computer simulation about the optical and thermal properties of the initialization-free disk was carried out. The results showed that Sb_2Te_3 film was a suitable additional layer of initialization-free phase-change optical disk for Ge_2Sb_<2+x>Te_5 phase-change media.

アシヒダナメクジの足腺から分泌される粘液の組織化学的研究を行ない又, 生活史の間における変化を見た。アシヒダナメクジの粘液腺は足の後端背側にあり, 腺は柱状の上皮細胞からなりこれから粘液を分泌する。成熟個体ではこの粘液は用いられたすべての組織化学的染色法によってよく染まったが, 幼若個体では染色反応は微弱であった。反応は性的成熟に伴い強さを増し, 成熟すると最大となる。粘液の成分は酸性粘液多糖と, 中性の粘液物質とサルファミュシンであった。これらの粘液物質の濃度は生活史中種々に変化をすることが判った。
