When December comes, the Christmas market is held in each European country. Especially, the Federal Republic of Germany is the best place for the Christmas. And, Christmas illumination begins in each German city. Therefore, the city of each place in Germany becomes a very fantastic mood as that result. The landscape of the Christmas and the culture of the Christmas at various places in Germany are introduced by this paper.

The recommended illuminance in the Japanese lighting standard (JIS Z 9110) was determined based on Indow and Kawai's experimental study concerning the relationship between illuminance and readability of printed text. As the observers in the experiment were young, the recommended illuminance derived from the experiment cannot be applied directly to older people. To estimate the recommended illuminance for older people, a set of numerical analyses wasconducted. We found that the readability scale in the above experimental study correlates with the Visibility Level (VL) defined by CIE publication No.19/21. The luminance difference threshold (ΔLmin) derived from the contrast threshold function (Cth) of the CIE publication was divided into two parts (ΔLaf for foveal adaptation and ΔLeq for veiling luminance), assuming ΔLmin=ΔLaf+ΔLeq. After considering age factors in each part, the luminance difference threshold function ΔLmin*was reconstructed. Applying the ΔLmin* function to the VL analysis, the recommended illuminance for older people was estimated. The result shows that at least about 700 lx of illuminance may be recommended for older people reading 3-mm high printed characters. The visibility level analysis is a useful method for assessing readability considering age-related effects.

The heart rates, based on the R-R intervals, and pneumogramms of 18 subjects have been measured for 35 min. at illumination levels from 10 to 2, 000 lx. Light sources used were the fluorescent lamps with the color temperature of 4200 K. The wall in the test room was yellow-green close to 7.5 GY 8/2, and the room temperature was kept at 24 ± 1 ° C. The amount of physiological load was assessed from the mean heart rate, heart rate variability, and mean amplitude and period of pneumogramm.At the same time, psychological effects were investigated by use of a simple questionnaire.The results indicated that physiological load was minimum at the illumination level of 320 lx, and increased with increase or decrease in illumination level from 320 lx. Therefore the level of 320 lx appears to be the physiologically optimum level of illumination.Psychologically, however, the level of 1, 000 lx was estimated to be the most desirable level of illumination, and desirability decreased as the illumination level was icreased or decreased from 1, 000 lx.

In a past study, we developed a laser radar system for estimating slant visibility, which is the visibility along the glide path of an airplane and proposed the new laser radar equation, considering the divergence of the transmitting laser beam in bad weather conditions, like rain, fog and snow, in order to obtain the exact slant visibility in various weather conditions. This equation corresponds well to practical data and estimated visibilities coincide well with actual ones in various weather conditions.In the present study, to confirm the appropriateness of the new laser radar equation, the scattering angle characteristics of a laser beam propagating through fog is measured by using an optical Fourier transform system and an artificial fog generator. As a result of this experiment, the spatial spread functions of broadening of the forward beam caused by the fog scattering are derived from the obtained data as angle distribution.Using these spread functions, the analysis of broadening of a laser beam propagating through fog in laser radar operation using a computer. This computer analysis reveals the alternation of the pattern of the transmitting laser beam through fog. As a result, broadening and scattering characteristics of the transmitting beam in foggy condition were found and the spreads of transmitting beam derived from the calculated results well explain the concept of the new equation.The analyzed results compared well with practical data for laser radar. And the slant visibilities derived from the analyses well coincided the actual ones.
