The development of controlled polymerization such as RAFT polymerization has enabled the synthesis of macromolecules with well-defined structures. Recently, control over polymerization processes has been achieved through regulation of chain growth with various external stimuli. This review highlights the interconversion between living radical and cationic polymerization using external stimuli. Photochemical and electrochemical stimuli are effective to switch the polymerization mechanism and the monomer selectivity in situ.

This review deals with new optically active phosphine ligands which appeared in the literature during past eight years. Emphasis is laid on the utility of these ligands in transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric reactions. New methods for the synthesis of chiral phosphine ligands are also described.

This mini review focuses on current topics on the following two reactions with azido compounds, which have been recently developed in the field of chemical biology; I) triazole synthesis by copper-catalyzed cycloaddition of an azide with an alkyne, II) modified Staudinger reaction, that is, Staudinger ligation.

Butadiene and isoprene are important raw materials for synthetic rubbers, resins and other products.Nippon Zeon developed unique processes to recover high quality butadiene and isoprene monomer respectively by extractive distillation using non aqueous dimethylformamide as selective solvent with a special polymerization inhibitor from C4 stream and C5 stream, respectively (GPB and GPI process).The characteristics of these processes are quite low energy consumption, high recovery rate, high product quality, no environmental problem, easy operation and maintenace-free processes.GPB process has been licensed all over the world and more than thirty plants are now under construction or operation. Recently, attention is being focused on the solvent conversion in existing plants for energy saving and operation improvement.GPI process has no chemical treatment which seems necessary in other processes, and other useful C5 components such as dicyclopentadiene and pentadienes can be easily recovered with additional equipment. These components can be used for various new products in synthetic rubber, resin and fine chemicals industries.

Behaviors of metal enzymes, especially of Fe-porphyrin ones are considered from the quantum-biological view point. In the introductory section, historical background of quantum biology and the inevitable role ought to be played by quantum biology in studying the enzyme reaction mechanism are described, in the light of the splendid success of quantum chemistry in explaining organic reaction mechanism.In Section 2, the physical and chemical properties of the porphin and Fe-porphyrins are explained on the basis of the electronic structures of these molecules, placing special emphasis on the HOMO and LUMO and also in relation to the interaction between the molecular orbitals of Fe and porphin.In Section 3, reaction mechanism of cytochrome P-450 is discussed. By comparing the transition energies and oscilaltor strengths calculated by means of the P-P-P method with the observed optical data, the stacked models are proposed as the plausible spacial orientation between P-450 and the substrates.

Two types of reactions with organomanganese have been examined. The first is a reaction of manganate reagents with carbon-carbon multiple bond. Catalytic version of these reactions is also disclosed. The second is a reaction of gem-dibromo compounds such as gem-dibromocyclopropane and dibromomethyltrialkylsilane with trialkylmanganate (II). The reaction was initiated by bromine-manganese exchange.

Various organic compounds containing SH and/or SS are found in organisms, and are playing important roles to maintain life. In this review, the nature of the groups and their reactions of biological importance are described surrounding following topics : evolution of hydrogen sulfide from boiled egg, disulfide interchange, stereostructure of disulfide group, thioester linkage and its biological significance, role of acyl carrier protein, and metallothionein.

Innovative carbon radical generation from hydrocarbons through a catalytic process under mild conditions has been achieved by the use of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) as a catalyst. This method can be successfully applied to a wide variety of functionalizations of hydrocarbons. Thus, alkanes are converted into alcohols, ketones, carboxylic acids, nitro alkanes and alkyl sulfonic acids through alkyl radicals generated by the action of NHPI. Hydroxysilylation was first performed by the addition of hydrosilanes and oxygen to alkenes bearing electron-withdrawing substituents. A new approach to oxyalkylation based on the concomitant addition of carbon radicals derived from alkanes or alcohols and molecular oxygen to alkenes or alkynes has been described.

In the previous paper, the products from formaldehyde by the Bucherer-Bergs synthesis was reported.In this paper, studies on the reaction about the effects of the reaction compositions and conditions was reported.Reaction of glycolonitrile and ammonium bicarbonate was studied and the result resembled to that of formaldehyde. When the mixture was refluxed with mineral acid, hydantoin was obtained in a 82% yield.In the case of formaldehyde the reaction temperature was elevated to give a rather higher yield of glycine. But the yield of glycine was at most 69% by direct heating at 170°C.It was considered that the driving force of the hydrolysis reaction stemmed from sodium carbonate, the equilibrium of the reaction had to be changed by the removal of the formed carbon dioxide. By this means, glycine was prepared in 86% yield which was as good as ordinary one using 2 moles of sodium hydroxide.
