Rabbit oncology is gaining more attention as more pet rabbits are surviving beyond their normal lifespans. Due to the limited epidemiological information on pet rabbits’ tumors in Thailand, this study aimed to report the prevalence and the potential risk factors associated with tumors in pet rabbits in Thailand. From 2018 to 2022, 93 tissue biopsies from tumor-suspected lesions on pet rabbits were gathered from animal hospitals in Bangkok and Chonburi provinces, Thailand. According to histopathology confirmation, tumors and tumor-like lesions were diagnosed. In this study, the overall tumors were 67.74% (n=63) out of the submitted cases (n=93). The most commonly affected organ systems were reproduction (65.08%) and integumentary (22.22%). Rabbits older than 5 years were 3.85 times more likely to have reproductive tumors than younger rabbits (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.45–10.27, P-value ≤0.01), and the most frequently occurring tumor type was uterine adenocarcinoma. Furthermore, male rabbits had a 17.02 times higher probability of developing cutaneous tumors than female rabbits (95% CI: 4.19–69.11, P-value ≤0.001), and the most frequently occurring tumor type was soft tissue sarcoma. The results of this study thus suggested that the age and sex of the rabbits were potential risk factors for tumor development in Thailand. The knowledge gained from our study also provided the recommendation for owners to monitor their rabbits’ health annually, particularly after late middle age, and rendered guidance for tumor detection in practical clinics.

The present study aimed to clarify an individual character of squirrel monkey by analysing a complicated behaviour, the egg-eating behaviour series (ES), of laboratory-reared squirrel monkeys. Eight types of unit movements were observed in the ES: the initial taking of the egg by hand; rolling it between the fingers; sniffing it in its shell; biting it in its shell; pressing or rubbing it against a surface of the cage; opening or peeling it; eating it; or putting it down without eating. In the first experiment, the behaviour of 72 monkeys was recorded by direct observation or by a video camera, following which the sequences of the movement from a total of 378 ES were analysed. Three statistically significant ES were detected (Ta-Bi-Op/Pe-Ea, Ta-Ro-Bi-Op/Pe-Ea and Ta-Pr/Ru-Bi-Op/Pe-Ea). In the second experiment, eight squirrel monkeys were selected at random from the same group and 31 to 36 ES for each monkey were observed and analysed. These monkeys were classified into a pressing/rubbing (Pr/Ru) group and a no-Pr/Ru group. Pr/Ru appeared to have no relationship to the monkey's age or sex. Furthermore, the Pr/Ru group monkeys contained individuals always exhibiting Pr/Ru in their ES and others sometimes lacking Pr/Pu in their ES. In short, the monkeys could be divided into two groups (ie., Pr/Ru and no-Pr/Ru) and they displayed their own individual characteristic ES. We concluded that the ES observed in this experiment suggest that the squirrel monkeys acquired individual characteristics in their ES in the laboratory environment.

We aimed to assess the effects of lactoferrin (Lf) on glycemic regulatory responses under restraint stress (RS) in rats. Bovine Lf (bLf, 100 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally administered to rats before oral saline administration or oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) following 60 min of RS load. In the case of oral saline administration, RS significantly raised plasma glucose, but bLf did not affect the level. Plasma glucose in OGTT showed an overall lower transition in the bLf group, and the levels at 30 and 180 min or the area under the curve (AUC) were significantly decreased. Although bLf suppressed an increase in plasma corticosterone during RS, the levels of plasma insulin, epinephrine and glucagon were not changed by the bLf treatment.

The aim of this study was to compare the intra and postoperative analgesic effects of sacrococcygeal epidural levobupivacaine with those of lumbosacral levobupivacaine in feline ovariohysterectomy. Thirty-six cats were premedicated with intramuscular acepromazine (0.05 mg/kg) and meperidine (6 mg/kg). Anesthesia was induced with intravenous propofol and maintained with isoflurane in oxygen. The cats were randomly assigned one of the three treatments receiving 0.33% levobupivacaine (0.3 mL/kg) into the sacrococcygeal (S-C group, n=12) or lumbosacral (L-S group, n=12) epidural space, or the same volume of 0.9% saline solution into one of the epidural approaches (Control group, n=12). Intraoperatively, cardiorespiratory variables, end-tidal isoflurane concentration (FE´ISO), and fentanyl requirements were recorded. Postoperative pain was assessed by the UNESP (Universidade Estadual Paulista)-Botucatu multidimensional composite pain scale and the Glasgow feline composite measure pain scale up to 8 hr post-extubation. Morphine was administered as rescue analgesia. Overall FE´ISO and fentanyl requirements were lower in the L-S and S-C compared to the Control (P=0.002–0.048, respectively). There was no significant difference in the cardiorespiratory variables during anesthesia, postoperative pain and rescue analgesia among groups. The time to standing after anesthesia was prolonged in the L-S and S-C groups than in the Control (P<0.001). Lumbosacral and sacrococcygeal epidural levobupivacaine resulted in similar decreases in isoflurane requirements and intraoperative fentanyl supplementation in the cats, with no postoperative benefits.

Aims of our study were to evaluate the feasibility and diagnostic value of two-dimensional shear wave elastography in dogs with acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and acute on chronic kidney disease, its correlation with renal functional (creatinine, urea), and prognostic parameters (serum calcium-phosphorus product, urinary output), and with contrast-enhanced ultrasound (qualitative and quantitative evaluation). The study was prospective. A group of healthy (Group A) and a group of nephropathic dogs (Group B) were included. Shear wave elastography was performed on the left kidney of the subjects of both groups; contrast-enhanced ultrasound was performed only in dogs with acute kidney injury and acute on chronic kidney disease. Sixty-four dogs were included (Group A, n=24; Group B, n=40). The renal stiffness values were significantly higher in Group B than Group A; optimal cut-off stiffness values for detection of renal pathology were: ≥1.51 m/sec (area under the curve, 0.84; 95% confidence interval 0.74–0.94) and ≥6.75 kPa (area under the curve, 0.84; 95% confidence interval 0.73–0.94). For contrast-enhanced ultrasound, a significant positive correlation was found between renal stiffness, area under the curve, and wash-out area under the curve values of cortex quantitative analysis. No correlations were found between renal stiffness and renal functional and prognostic parameters. Shear wave elastography showed diagnostic utility to detect renal abnormalities in dogs with acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease and acute on chronic kidney disease, however, it could not differentiate between these different nephropathies.

Hualian No. 4 wild bitter gourd (WBG) is a specific vegetable cultivated by the Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station in Taiwan. WBG is commonly consumed as a vegetable and used as a popular folk medicine. However, few studies have demonstrated the effects of WBG supplementation on exercise performance, physical fatigue and the biochemical profile. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential beneficial effects of WBG extract on fatigue and ergogenic functions following physiological challenge. Three groups of male ICR mice (n=8 per group) were orally administered 0, 1 or 2.5 g/kg/day of WBG for 4 weeks. They were respectively designated the vehicle, WBG-1X and WBG-2.5X groups. WBG significantly decreased body weight (BW) and epididymal fat pad (EFP) weight. Concerning physical performance, WBG supplementation dose-dependently increased grip strength and endurance swimming time. Concerning anti-fatigue activity, WBG decreased levels of serum lactate, ammonia, creatine kinase and blood urea nitrogen, and economized glucose metabolism after acute exercise challenge. Glycogen in the liver and gastrocnemius muscle dose-dependently increased with WBG treatment. Concerning the biochemical profile, WBG treatment significantly decreased alanine aminotransferase (ALT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and urea acid (UA), and increased total protein (TP). Therefore, 4-week supplementation with WBG may decrease white adipose weight, enhance energy economy, increase glycogen storage to enhance exercise performance and reduce fatigue.

Fixed rabies viruses (CVS-11 strain) were inoculated intramuscularly to C57BL/6J mice, and the pathomorphological changes of the spinal cord including dorsal root spinal ganglion cells were investigated. At 4 days postinoculation (PI), viral antigens were first detected in the spinal neurons and dorsal root spinal ganglion cells without producing morphological changes. At 5 days PI, mild infiltration of lymphocytes was observed around the central canal, small blood vessels and leptomeninges. Cells positive to anti-Iba1 and anti-GFAP antibodies increased significantly from 3 to 5 days PI, respectively. Microglia changed their morphological forms to be ramified or amoeboid, and astroglia extended their cytoplasm from the leptomeninges to the parenchyma. At 7 days PI, apoptotic cells were found in the spinal cord and dorsal root spinal ganglion using TUNEL. We confirmed that most of T lymphocytes and a minority of microglial cells underwent apoptosis, using a combination of TUNEL and immunostaining with antibodies to viral phosphoprotein, CD3, Iba1 and GFAP. On the other hand, astroglial cells and virus-infected nerve cells were negative against TUNEL and cleaved caspase-3 antibody. These findings indicate that T lymphocytes and microglial cells died by apoptosis, whereas virus-infected nerve cells died by necrosis. This was accompanied by increased numbers and morphological changes of glial cells associated with the pathogenesis of CVS-11 in the C57BL/6J mouse.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare skin tumor that shares a similar immunophenotype with Merkel cells, although its origin is debatable. More than 80% of human MCC cases are associated with Merkel cell polyomavirus infections and viral gene integration. Recent studies have shown that the clinical and pathological characteristics of feline MCC are comparable to those of human MCC, including its occurrence in aged individuals, aggressive behavior, histopathological findings, and the expression of Merkel cell markers. More than 90% of feline MCC are positive for the Felis catus papillomavirus type 2 (FcaPV2) gene. Molecular changes involved in papillomavirus-associated tumorigenesis, such as increased p16 and decreased retinoblastoma (Rb) and p53 protein levels, were observed in FcaPV2-positive MCC, but not in FcaPV2-negative MCC cases. These features were also confirmed in FcaPV2-positive and -negative MCC cell lines. The expression of papillomavirus E6 and E7 genes, responsible for p53 degradation and Rb inhibition, respectively, was detected in tumor cells by in situ hybridization. Whole genome sequencing revealed the integration of FcaPV2 DNA into the host feline genome. MCC cases often develop concurrent skin lesions, such as viral plaque and squamous cell carcinoma, which are also associated with papillomavirus infection. These findings suggest that FcaPV2 infection and integration of viral genes are involved in the development of MCC in cats. This review provides an overview of the comparative pathology of feline and human MCC caused by different viruses and discusses their cell of origin.

狂犬病ウイルスCVS株を, 脳内, 眼球内, 鼻腔内, 筋肉内, 皮下それぞれの経路でマウスに接種した後, 中枢神経系におけるウイルスの広がりをアビジン-ビオチン複合体(ABC)法を用いた免疫化学的および病理組織学的手法によって経時的に検索した. 脳内接種と眼球内投与群でのみマウスは致死性感染を生じたので, この2経路において詳細な検討を行った. 脳内接種マウスでは, ウイルス抗原は主に大脳皮質の神経細胞, 錐体細胞, 海馬の顆粒細胞に認められた. 眼球内接種マウスにおいては, 最初に三叉神経節に検出され, 続いて大脳皮質と小脳に広がっていく傾向が観察された. 海馬で眼球内接種の初期では極く僅かの細胞に抗原が認められたのみであった. いずれの経路においても感染マウスの中枢神経系には炎症像もNegri小体も認められなかった. この結果から, 死に至る運動失調や衰弱といった臨床症状は, 炎症反応によるものではなく, ウイルスの神経系機能への直接的な影響に起因することが示唆された. また, 通常の病理組織学的検査や海馬のスタンプ標本の蛍光抗体法では狂犬病の同定ができない症例が存在する可能性が示唆され, 狂犬病を疑われて早期に死亡した患者や屠殺された動物などの検査には, ABC法が有用であると考えられた.

Advanced imaging techniques under general anesthesia are frequently employed to achieve a definitive diagnosis of canine nasal diseases. However, these examinations may not be performed immediately in all cases. This study aimed to construct prediction models for canine nasal diseases using less-invasive examinations such as clinical signs and radiography. Dogs diagnosed with nasal disease between 2010 and 2020 were retrospectively investigated to construct a prediction model (Group M; GM), and dogs diagnosed between 2020 and 2021 were prospectively investigated to validate the efficacy (Group V; GV). Prediction models were created using two methods: manual (Model 1) and LASSO logistic regression analysis (Model 2). In total, 103 and 86 dogs were included in GM and GV, respectively. In Model 1, the sensitivity and specificity of neoplasia (NP) and sino-nasal aspergillosis (SNA) were 0.88 and 0.81 in GM and 0.92 and 0.78 in GV, respectively. Those of non-infectious rhinitis (NIR) and rhinitis secondary to dental disease (DD) were 0.78 and 0.88 in GM and 0.64 and 0.80 in GV, respectively. In Model 2, the sensitivity and specificity of NP and SNA were 0.93 and 1 in GM and 0.93 and 0.75 in GV, respectively. Those of NIR and DD were 0.96 and 0.89 in GM and 0.80 and 0.79 in GV, respectively. This study suggest that it is possible to create a prediction model using less-invasive examinations. Utilizing these predictive models may lead to appropriate general anesthesia examinations and treatment referrals.

A 1-year-old spayed female Miniature Schnauzer had chronic hyponatremia, accompanied by polyuria and polydipsia. Blood tests and urinalysis revealed severe hyponatremia, low plasma osmolality with euvolemia, and increased sodium excretion in urine. Hypothyroidism and hypoadrenocorticism were ruled out as causes. These findings led to the diagnosis of syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed dilation of the lateral ventricles, indicating severe hydrocephalus. Tolvaptan, a vasopressin V2 receptor antagonist commonly used in human SIADH, was administered along with water restriction. This treatment resulted in a consistent increase in plasma sodium levels without any adverse effects. This case report represents the first documented evidence of the therapeutic efficacy of tolvaptan in treating SIADH in a dog.

The main factors affecting the outcome of Trueperella pyogenes (T. pyogenes) mastitis were examined through a survey of diagnostic data and interviews relating to the occurrence of T. pyogenes mastitis in 83 quarters from 82 Holstein cows between August 2012 and April 2014. Ultimately, one cow was sold during the examination, and 82 quarters from 81 cows were used for analysis on prognosis. T. pyogenes mastitis occurred year round in both lactating and dry cows. The incidence of T. pyogenes mastitis did not significantly differ by month or show seasonality in either lactating or dry cows. Therefore, the occurrence of T. pyogenes mastitis also differed from that of summer mastitis. The 1-month survival rate of infected cows was 64.6% (53/82), and the recovery rate of quarters with T. pyogenes mastitis was 14.6% (12/82). Bivariate logistic regression analysis was performed with survival and culling of infected cows as objective variables and with recovery and non-recovery of quarters with T. pyogenes mastitis as objective variables. The severe cases were significantly culled (odds ratio, 16.30) compared to mild cases, and the status of quarters didn’t recover (odds ratio, 6.50). The results suggest that mild to moderate symptom severity at the time of onset are the main factors affecting outcomes in cows and recovery of quarters infected with T. pyogenes mastitis. Further, high level of NAGase activity also suggested the potential use as an indicator of culling of cows with T. pyogenes mastitis.

Melanoma is a highly aggressive and metastatic cancer occurring in both humans and dogs. Canine melanoma accounts for a significant proportion of neoplastic diseases in dogs, and despite standard treatments, overall survival rates remain low. Protein phosphatase 6 (PP6), an evolutionarily conserved serine/threonine protein phosphatase, regulates various biological processes. Additionally, the loss of PP6 function reportedly leads to the development of melanoma in humans. However, there are no reports regarding the role of PP6 in canine cancer cells. We, therefore, conducted a study investigating the role of PP6 in canine melanoma by using four canine melanoma cell lines: CMec1, CMM, KMeC and LMeC. PP6 knockdown increased phosphorylation levels of mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 1/2 (MEK1/2) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) but not Akt. Furthermore, PP6 knockdown decreased sensitivity to trametinib, a MEK inhibitor, but did not alter sensitivity to Akt inhibitor. These findings suggest that PP6 may function as a tumor suppressor in canine melanoma and modulate the response to trametinib treatment. Understanding the role of PP6 in canine melanoma could lead to the development of more effective treatment strategies for this aggressive disease.

A 25-year-old female California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) reared in an aquarium died following a history of anorexia, lethargy, abnormal protrusion of the skin, and oral respiration. At necropsy, multiple yellowish-white nodules with diameters of 0.1–0.5 cm were disseminated in the thoracic cavity and lungs. Histopathologically, the nodules were continuous with normal mesothelium and were characterized by the proliferation of spindle-shaped to polygonal neoplastic cells with prominent atypia. The neoplastic cells exhibited diffuse, strong staining for vimentin and partial, weak to moderate staining for cytokeratin AE1/AE3. Based on these findings, the lesions were diagnosed as pleural mesothelioma. This study reports the first case of pleural mesothelioma in California sea lion.

We focused on streptomycin resistance because of the high percentage of streptomycin-resistant Escherichia coli concerning the amount used of streptomycin. Antimicrobial resistance and horizontal transfer were identified in 117 isolates of coliform bacteria from chicken meat to identify the factors that increase streptomycin resistance. Escherichia (45 isolates) was the predominant genus. Most streptomycin-resistant Escherichia isolates were resistant to other antimicrobials (17/18), suggesting that using various antimicrobials could select streptomycin-resistant Escherichia isolates. Resistance was transferred from 7 out of the 18 streptomycin-resistant isolates. The transconjugants acquired strA/strB (7/7), blaTEM (5/7), aphA1 (5/7), tetB (3/7), dfrA14 (1/7) and/or dfrA17 (1/7). The co-resistance of streptomycin resistance with other resistances would also increase streptomycin resistance.

The incidence of feline gastrointestinal (GI) lymphoma has recently increased. Serum amyloid A (SAA) levels are elevated in feline lymphoma. However, no reports have evaluated SAA concentrations and outcomes in feline GI lymphoma. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of SAA and other factors in feline GI lymphoma to assess the outcomes with potential differences. The study included 39 client-owned cats diagnosed with GI lymphoma, which were divided into two groups: high- and low-grade lymphomas. Changes in SAA concentration, complete blood count (CBC), and biochemical profiles were analyzed at the time of initial presentation as well as on days 1, 28, and 56. Differences between the two groups were investigated. High-grade lymphoma was observed in 17 cats, whereas 22 cats showed low-grade lymphoma. SAA concentrations on the day of initial presentation were significantly higher in low-grade lymphoma than those in high-grade lymphoma (median, 12.4 µg/mL; range, 4.8–46.5 µg/mL vs. 3.8 µg/mL; 3.8–13.7 µg/mL; P=0.011). Elevated SAA concentration on day 56 in high-grade GI lymphoma was a poor prognostic factor. (Hazard Ratio=1.012, per 1 µg/mL increase; 95% confidence interval; 1.004–1.020, P=0.002). The SAA concentration on the day of initial presentation did not serve as a suitable prognostic factor and did not depend on the grade or stage of the lymphoma. However, continuous SAA concentration measurement may be useful for predicting the outcome of feline GI lymphoma.

We present the report of trismus due to hyperadrenocorticism-associated myotonia diagnosed by electromyography in a dog. An intact female Miniature Dachshund, 13 years and 9 months old, presented with stiff gait and trismus as well as polyuria and polydipsia. Abdominal ultrasonography showed enlarged adrenal glands. An adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation test revealed an exaggerated response. Based on these findings, this case was diagnosed with hyperadrenocorticism. Electromyography revealed myotonic discharge in the temporalis muscle and limbs. Therefore, trismus was considered to be caused by hyperadrenocorticism-associated myotonia, and the case was treated with oral trilostane (1.3 mg/kg, once daily). During the 4-month follow-up period, despite the partial improvement in stiff gait, trismus did not recover. Long-term data on more cases are warranted to assess the prognosis and clinical characteristics of trismus due to hyperadrenocorticism-associated myotonia.

Although feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) distresses of many cats, its pathogenesis is unknown and the diagnosis is challenging. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are metabolized into various lipid mediators. Lipid mediators such as prostaglandins (PGs) modulate inflammation and many of them are excreted into the urine. Thus, the investigation of the urinary lipid profile may reveal pathogenesis and help diagnosis of FIC. We collected urine samples from five FIC cats by spontaneous urination and analyzed 158 types of lipid mediators in urines using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The urinary levels of PUFAs were higher in FIC compared to those of the healthy group. The excretions of a major inflammatory mediator, PGD2, were less in FIC. Other well-known inflammatory mediators such as PGE2, PGI2, and their metabolites did not show a difference. In contrast, the levels of PGF2α and its 2 metabolites and PGF3α were higher in FIC. These results may provide new insights into the future management of cat FIC.

The mutant allele frequency of the Pyruvate kinase (PK) gene has been investigated mostly in pure breed cats. We investigated the PK mutant gene in stray and animal hoarding mongrel cats in Hokkaido, Japan. We also investigated the kinship of individuals carrying the mutant gene. Genotyping was conducted using the previously reported real-time PCR method. Fourteen microsatellite markers were used to identify the parents and offspring of cats carrying the PK mutant gene, and some kinship such as parent-offspring and siblings was observed. Some stray and animal hoarding cats carried the PK mutation gene and that consanguinity was confirmed among these cats indicated that the PK mutation gene was spread by unregulated interbreeding.

The concept of “stem cell pathology” is to establish the role of the stem cells by exploring their contribution to lesion development. The somatic stem cells are present in the body. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH; recently named “undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma”) includes pluripotential undifferentiated mesenchymal stem cells as a cell element. An antibody (A3) generated by using rat MFH cells as the antigen labels somatic stem cells such as bone marrow stem cells and immature endothelial cells and pericytes, as well as immature epithelial cells in epithelialization. By using A3 and other antibodies recognizing somatic stem cells, it is considered that myofibroblasts appearing in rat fibrotic lesions are developed partly from immature hepatic stellate cells in hepatic fibrosis, immature pancreatic stellate cells in pancreatic fibrosis, pericytes/endothelial cells in neovascularization in injured tissues, as well as via the epithelial-mesenchymal transition. These progenitors may be in the stem cell lineage. In this review, the author introduces the histogenesis of MFH and the characteristics of myofibroblasts appearing in fibrosis, based mainly on the author’s studies.
