The original edition of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Émile, published in duodecimo by Duchesne and preserved in the Nagoya University Library, does not contain leaf P, which should be placed at the end of the third volume, and leaf V, which should be placed at the end of the fourth volume. These sheets were inserted at the last moment of printing. It was the errata and the privillège. These sheets are missing in the copy annotated by Rousseau himself, now preserved in the Geneva Library. In addition, some manual inscriptions found in the copy held by Nagoya University suggest that this copy was offered to Alfred-Auguste Cuvillier- Fleury(1802-87) by Louis Bonaparte, Earl of Saint-Leu(1778-1846), father of Napoleon III, in 1820 in Florence, where Cuvillier-Fleury worked as a secretary for Earl of Saint-Leu.

Information Commons or Learning Commons are now recognized as a newly developed service model in academic libraries. However, these are a 'formative concept' that is still evolving in practice at libraries. First, this paper describes the characteristics and levels of so-called commons concept, which are different from those of traditional services. Then, the conceptualization of the Information Commons / Learning Commons is discussed in terms of the library's strategic fit with the outside world. The changes in the development of learning theory and net generation traits, aspects of the outside world, are discussed. The author argues that the two Commons should have the important position of 'Ba' for nurturing knowledge and learning.

Using an OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) that provides search access points with a table of contents at a college library, we implemented analysis of OPAC access logs and a search experiment. We examined information seeking behaviors by taking advantage of OPAC. We conducted the analysis by paying particular attention to the effects on seeking behaviors of differences in experience in using search engines. As a result of our research, three things have become clear. 1) It is typical that the students combine one or two words to make a search term and they have a tendency to use free terms frequently. 2) In more than half of the search results, the search terms were found in the tables of contents. 3) Experiences of using search engines affected how to deal with the situation when a search receives no hits. The students are rarely conscious of the difference between searches by OPACs and search engines. These results indicate that a search system based on standard bibliographic information in traditional OPAC cannot respond to users’various information seeking behaviors.

The Takagi Family Documents held at Nagoya University Library is a collection of old documents passed down through the Nishi-Takagi family, former retainers of the shogun. Currently, Nagoya University Library Research takes over the project of organizing the remaining materials. In parallel with this, we are also investigating related documents that exist outside the university. Therefore, this paper introduces documents that were newly confirmed after FY2014, again reports the current status of the three Takagi families document, and at the same time present digital library concept for the integration and sharing of the three Takagi families document.

This paper discusses social ramifications of a cache of old documents dating to 1491 that was sent by a man named Saemon no Taifu that was recently discovered in a storehouse of Daisen-ji temple in the Chita district of Aichi Prefecture. The documents-including a kakocho death register and a genealogy for Saemon no Taifu-are currently housed with papers of the Noma Family and Physicians of the Owari Clan papers in the Nagoya University Manuscript Collection. Among other things, the records reveal (1) that the current Daisen-ji temple in Chita district was erected on the site of a smaller hermitage from the pre-Tokugawa era called Nyoian, (2) that Saemon no Taifu and his immediate successors were jizamurai-that is, part-time samurai warriors who also cultivated the land-thus exemplifying blurrier social distinctions before Toyotomi Hideyoshi implemented his heino bunri policy separating peasants from warriors, and (3) that succession to Saemon no Taifu's position as head priest of the Nyoi-an hermitage could be achieved in a variety of ways: blood-line inheritance, adoption of an adult male successor, or through a master-disciple relationship. Older pre-Tokugawa temples like Nyoi-an were pulled down and replaced by early-modern temples like Daisen-ji as the earlier era of ambiguous social distinctions gave way to Hideyoshi's social policies at the end of the 16th century creating strict separation between warriors and peasants (heino bunri) and between the clergy and laity (sozoku bunri).

This paper will report on a study of the 78rpm standard-play records housed in the Aoki collection of the Nagoya University Library. The collection in question is comprised of 5 traditional Japanese music records and 59 Chinese opera records purchased in the mid- 1920s by Masaru Aoki, a renowned scholar in the field of Chinese literature. In this paper, I will use information from the record labels, catalogs of records, and prior research to inventory basic information including the year of issue, genre, and record company . In addition, I will provide a commentary, and discuss the value of the collection of records as a material for the study of Chinese theater.

This report introduces the Nagoya University Digital Library of Western Books released on the Internet in July 2018. This digital library was funded by Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research with the aim of widening the reach of the rare Western books held by Nagoya University Library. The feature of this digital library is that detailed descriptive catalogues are attached to the Western classical accounts that are stored. Essentially, the works published before the nineteenth century are not necessarily of the same edition even if they are printed at the same time, because of the historical features of the binding process. By merely digitizing the entire content of the work and publishing it in the Digital Library, the user was perhaps not able to understand the characteristics of the work. This digital library was created in consideration of this aspect. However, because of budgetary constraints, only publications that are rare and highly suitable for publication globally are given preference for digitization, and the number of works currently being published is 132. In this report, we shall introduce the characteristics and usage of this digital library.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Émile is preserved in three original editions of two affiliations: the Paris editions published in octavo and in duodecimo by Nicolas-Bonaventure Duchesne (1712-65)and the Amsterdam edition published in octavo by Jean Néaulme(1697-1780) in 1762. That same year, Duschesne published second and third editions in two formats. In addition, we have many pirate editions and we now distinguish in total 19 editions of 14 affiliations of Émile with publication date 1762. In this article in Japanese we will present precise points to distinguish the original editions from the others, according to the studies executed by the Western Rousseauists, published in French and in English. Although we do not present any new discoveries, this is a worthwhile pursuit given that Japanese Rousseauists have never discussed this subject so far.

This report concisely explains the history of information science in the United States. The purpose of this report is to reconfirm the field framework of information science. The framework of information science of Japan is different from the information science that Machlup and Mansfield define, because it is a framework similar to informatics for Japan.
