この小論は,人種表象に関する共同研究の成果である『人種の表象と社会的リアリティ』(2009)およびRacial Representations in Asia(2011)で展開した人種表象についての議論をさらに深化させるために,その準備作業として今後の課題をいくつかを素描するものである。最初に,日本の「見えない人種」の表象との接点を見出すために,海外の事例をいくつか紹介しつつ,表象のプロセスにおいて注目すべき点を指摘する。ここで取り上げるのは,南北戦争前のアメリカ南部で「白人」「黒人」の境界領域にいた人々や,現代のオーストラリア社会に存在する,「白い肌」をもつアボリジニの人々などである。「白人」との集団間結婚の繰り返しにより,身体的可視性を失い「見えない人種」となったこれらの人々を, コミュニティやメディアはどのように同定し,表象するのかが明らかにされる。次に,人種表象,とくに視覚表象と非視覚表象の相互作用がもたらすいくつかの興味深い現象に目を向ける。最後に,これまでの共同研究会における議論を踏まえて,検討を要する課題のいくつかを記すことにより,今後の発展につなげたい。This essay sketches our next steps to further elaborate on the discussions on racial representations developed in Racial Representations and Social Realities (2009) and Racial Representations in Asia (2011) as the results of our collaborative research project. First, I point out some pronounced representational processes taken from overseas examples in order to find the nexus with Japan's representations on "invisible races." The cases include the people in the borderlands between "white" and "black" in the antebellum American South and "white skinned" aborigines in contemporary Australia. I attempt to clarify the ways in which communities and media identify and represent those people who have become "invisible races" due to repeated inter- group marriage with "whites" over generations. After moving to the curious phenomena derived from the mutual effects of both visual and non- visual representations, the essay concludes by noting issues in need of further discussion. It is my hope that our research, built on past dialogue among our collaborators, will continue to develop.
