大麻に含まれるTHCは幻覚作用を有するが, 優れた鎮痛作用を示すことから医療への応用が期待されている重要な化合物である.THCの前駆体であるTHCAの生成機構を解析した結果, 本化合物は新規な性質を有する酸化酵素(THCA合成酵素)の触媒作用によって生合成されることが明らかとなった.

Most of organisms living on the earth have internal clocks and thus, the circadian rhythm represents a basic feature of life. In mammals, as in other many organisms, the cellular circadian core oscillator is thought to be composed of an autoregulatory transcription-(post)translation-based feedback loop involving a set of clock genes. The signal transduction cascade originating from this core oscillatory loop induces the expression of a variety of genes in a circadian fashion, and regulates many cellular functions such as cell division and energy metabolism. This cell oscillation system localizes in most of cells in the body. The circadian system has evolved in a close connection to light which synchronizes the internal phase to environmental rhythms. In mammals, the master clock is located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus, from which clock signals are transmitted through neuronal and hormonal oscillation conducting systems to the whole body. Arrived clock signals entrain the cell-clocks in peripheral organs, and the intracellular oscillating loop coordinates the timing of the expression of a variety of genes with specific cellular functions. Thus, the mammalian clock system displays a multidimensional complex structure constituting the central oscillator, oscillation conducting systems, and peripheral cellular oscillators.

How life emerged on the ancient earth is one of the biggest questions in biology. RNA has a strong advantage as a candidate for the first polymer of life because it can simultaneously achieve information storage and enzymatic functions. However, RNA is difficult to be synthesized prebiotically and also chemically unstable. Recent studies have shown that positively charged peptides can support RNA to overcome such weaknesses. Such peptides also stimulate activities of ribozymes by assisting interactions between negatively charged RNA molecules. The primitive relationship between RNA and peptide is probably still surviving in modern enzymes like ribosome and RNA polymerase.

The TOM complex is the main entry gate for mitochondrial proteins. Recently we determined the Cryo-EM structure of the yeast TOM complex at 3.8 Å resolution. The structure shows the dimeric form consisting of two Tom40 β-barrel channels and α-helical transmembrane subunits. The structure-based biochemical analysis revealed that presequence-containing preproteins pass through the Tom40 channel in the middle of the dimer and are transferred to the TIM23 complex. On the other hand, presequence-less preproteins leave the channel at the periphery of the TOM complex and are relayed to the chaperone proteins. Our results demonstrate the efficient transfer mechanism of preproteins.

The History of the evolutionary study of eusociality in Hymenoptera are briefly reviewed, and simultaneous evolution of sex ratio and worker behavior is studied. The importance of haplodiploid sex determination is corroborated by computer Simulation. It is also found that the sex ratio of the first brood is biassed by their mother towards the sex which has more worker than another sex. This fact suggests that mother control of sex ratio in first brood is important factor responsible for Hymenopteran society having no male worker.

A phylogenetic tree of visual pigments we have constructed, revealed that cone pigments evolved earlier than rhodopsins, so that color vision as well as photopic vision appeared earlier than scotopic vision. Conversions of cone pigments to rhodopsins in the process of evolution took place by replacing basic amino acid residues with neutral and/or acidic ones. A noteworthy difference between rhodopsins and cone pigments is that the rhodopsins are longer in lifetime of meta II-intermediate than cone pigments, which would be favorable for conducting the high photosensitivity of rods comparing cones. Chicken tetrachromatic vision was discussed using color diagrams.

Neurons respond not only regularly but also irregularly to periodic stimulation depending on the stimulus strength and frequency. In the brain, field potential oscillations (rhythms) also respond not only regularly but also irregularly. These irregular responses are not stochastic, but deterministic chaos being subject to a simple nonlinear dynamical rule. This implies that neuron and neural network models described by deterministic dynamical equations reproduce even complex activities. In this review, I focus on dynamical features of neurons and neural networks such as chaos, synchronization, rhythm, and propagation. I will also mention the theta traveling wave in one direction, which would be crucial for sequence learning in the hippocampus.

Gymnemic acids, a mixture of triterpene glucuronides extracted from the Indian plant Gymnema sylvestre, have been known to suppress the sweet taste sensation in man. Recent studies have revealed that gymnemic acids showed inhibitory effects not only on glucose absorption in the rat small intestine, but also on glucan synthesis by glucosyltransferase from Streptococcus mutans. These findings suggest that gymnemic acids interact with various proteins which take part in sugar discriminations.
