Small-sized, AC series commutator motors (universal motors) are used very much in small appliances such as vacuum cleaners and hand tools, because they offer advantages of high speed and low cost. In particular, motors for vacuum cleaners are being designed with smaller size, but higher speed and increased output power. Therefore, it is desirable to improve commutation performance, because it influences the brush lifetime.<br>In this paper, a method to improve commutation performance of the motors is described. It is an exceptional armature winding form in which the turn number of the backward coil is less than that of the forward coil in the same slots. The commutation sequence determines which is the backward coil and which is the forward one. The configuration and operation of the exceptional armature winding form for universal motors are detailed. A factor to relate the commutation performance using the magnetic field and the commutation analyses is also described. The design theory is built up with respect to the exceptional armature winding form and usefulness of the method is verified for predicting brush lifetime with actual motors. The effect of the armature winding to improvement the brush lifetime is confirmed experimentally.

The procedure for identifying linear time-varying systems with dead times using the wavelet analysis has already been proposed by the authors. This paper reports an application of the identification procedure to actual control systems of watertube drum-boiler in a thermal power plant. The control systems are required to supply steadily high-quality steam subject to disturbances due to unexpected changes in load. Therefore, it is necessary to make a precise model which takes the disturbances into consideration for control system design. The identification procedure is applied by the following steps: (1) extension of the method for single-input/output systems to that for two-input/output systems, (2) estimation of the time span where the system is considered to be in steady states, and (3) estimation of the process transfer functions in each time span. The identified model is evaluated in terms of mean square errors of the process outputs (steam-pressure and water-level) in comparison with an ARX model.

This paper presents a system based on the control of PTZ cameras for automated real-time tracking of individual figure skaters moving on an ice rink. In the video images of figure skating, irregular trajectories, various postures, rapid movements, and various costume colors are included. Therefore, it is difficult to determine some features useful for image tracking. On the other hand, an ice rink has a limited area and uniform high intensity, and skating is always performed on ice. In the proposed system, an ice rink region is first extracted from a video image by the region growing method, and then, a skater region is extracted using the rink shape information. In the camera control process, each camera is automatically panned and/or tilted so that the skater region is as close to the center of the image as possible; further, the camera is zoomed to maintain the skater image at an appropriate scale. The results of experiments performed for 10 training scenes show that the skater extraction rate is approximately 98%. Thus, it was concluded that tracking with camera control was successful for almost all the cases considered in the study.

This paper proposes a novel control method based on the virtual AC/DC/AC conversion for the matrix converter. The virtual AC/DC/AC conversion method is a very simple strategy to control the input current and the output voltage for the matrix converter. There are two new topics proposed in this paper. Firstly, this paper proposes the minimum switching loss modulation on the virtual rectifier. In case of the proposed modulation, only two arms switching in the virtual rectifier using dc link current control by the virtual inverter can obtain clean sinusoidal input current. Secondly, a novel lean controlled carrier modulation on the virtual inverter is proposed. The leans of the triangle carrier are controlled by the duty ratio of the rectifier side pulse. The lean controlled carrier reduces harmonic distortion of the input current by avoiding interference between the rectifier control and the inverter control. These new proposals are confirmed by simulation and experimental results.

Power factor and torque of synchronous reluctance motors with a slit rotor are studied. In there stators, divided teeth made of powder magnetic core are adopted and windings are improved to get high space factor of stator windings and to shorten coil ends. In there rotors, stainless sheets are inserted among soft magnetic metal sheets with adhesive to strengthen the rotors and rotor structure is improved to enlarge the saliency ratio (<i>L<sub>d</sub></i>/<i>L<sub>q</sub></i>). As the result, the power factor 0.78 and 1.6 times torque at same motor size are attained.

This paper focuses on no-load iron losses of turbine generators. To calculate iron losses of turbine generators a program was developed. In the program, core loss curves of materials used for stator core were reproduced precisely by using tables of loss coefficients. Accuracy of calculation by this method was confirmed by comparing calculated values with measured in a model stator core. The iron loss of a turbine generator estimated with considering three-dimensional distribution of magnetic fluxes. And additional losses included in measured iron loss was evaluated with three-dimensional magnetic field analysis.

This paper presents that, in hot strip finishing mills, AC motor drive systems improve the strip tension control performance which results in better strip thickness accuracy than DC motor drive systems.<br>Recently the AC motors are more widely used in many industrial fields including steel making process because of their higher response of speed control, higher reliability, and easier maintenance than DC motors. Here we consider the effect of using AC motors as rolling main motors from a point of view of strip thickness accuracy. We analyse the relation between speed control response of the strip tension control system and strip thickness accuracy with use of the Bode diagram and non-linear simulation. As a result we show that the higher response of AC motor speed control system can achieve the smaller strip tension deviation, furthermore makes it possible to get higher response of gage control system which turns more accurate strip thickness.

High speed cameras have the ability to detect luminance variation due to the alternating current of illuminations. On the basis of the luminance variation, this paper proposes a method to estimate an image of when one of the illuminations is nonluminous. If the nonluminous illumination is the source of specular reflection, the estimated image only includes diffuse reflection components of other illuminations. Experimental results in various conditions show that specular reflection components are eliminated without the displacement of a camera or an illumination.

A control scheme for quickly starting a portable X-ray generator used in the livestock industry is proposed in this paper. A portable X-ray generator used to take X-ray images of animals such as horses, sheep and dogs should be capable of starting quickly because it is difficult for veterinarians to take X-ray images of animals at their timing. In order to develop a scheme for starting the X-ray tube quickly, it is necessary to analysis the X-ray tube. However, such an analysis has not been discussed until now. First, the states of an X-ray tube are classified into the temperature-limited state and the space-charge-limited state. Furthermore, existence of "mixed state" that comprises both is newly proposed in this paper. From these analyses, a novel scheme for quickly starting an X-ray generator is proposed; this scheme is considered with the characteristics of the X-ray tube. The proposed X-ray system that is capable of starting quickly is evaluated on the basis of experimental results.

A method is proposed for designing a robust controller for PWM power amplifiers, which are widely used as amplifiers themselves and power supplies. The main technical requirements imposed on PWM power amplifiers are linerarity in wide frequency range and well-damped fast dynamic response against extensive load and d. c. power supply variations. Therefore, in order to satisfy the design specifications-linearity in wide frequency range and no overshoots during the transients, an approximate 2-degree-of-freedom integral type control structure is proposed as well as a design procedure for the robust controller is discussed. It is clarified from some simulations and experiments that the designed controller shows highlighted good dynamic performances and effective disturbance rejection properties against external disturbances, i. e. load and power-supply variations.

In electric motor coaches, when the adhesion force coefficient between rail and driving wheel decreases suddenly, the electric motor coach has slip phenomena. We have already proposed the anti-slip control system based on ordinary disturbance observer. In order to realize the more stable anti-slip readhesion control in case of large variation of adhesion force coefficient, this paper proposes a new anti-slip readhesion control based on first order disturbance observer and new torque function. In the numerical simulation results in this paper, the proposed anti-slip readhesion control well regulates the driving wheel torque of electric motor coach stably.

A novel multi modular GTO current source converter structure is presented to application to superconducting magnetic energy storage system. N_??_N converters are arranged in a array form. The GTO current source converter array with appropriate arrangement of modulation and carrier signals can output large power with high quality line current waveforms. With using of only <i>N</i> transformers, 6N<sup>2</sup> pulse number converter performance is obtained. Only low switching of GTO is required since PWM is primarily used as a method to control flow of power instead of reducing harmonics. It is compared with conventional direct paralleled multi modular converter structure. The results of simulation are presented in this paper.

In this paper, we propose a method for recognizing phoneme by using a sequence of color lip images. The mouth images are obtained in series by using the color camera set at the front of the face. First, among the sequence of the images, each object image for processing is detected by using mouth movement information. Next step, in each image, the mouth region is detected by the color information. Then, the four shapes which are outside line of lip, the inside line of lip, the tangue and the center line of lip are extracted by using the change in distribution of gray level. Finally, the recognition of phoneme is carried out by the method based on the subspace method. As the training, the subspace method needs the 20 features extracted from the above four shapes. In this paper, the authors describe the results of the experiments which were performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Motion recognition based on sensory information is important for providing assistance to human using robots. Several studies have been carried out on motion recognition based on image information. However, in the motion of humans contact with an object can not be evaluated precisely by image-based recognition. This is because the considering force information is very important for describing contact motion. In this paper, a modal-power-based haptic motion recognition is proposed; modal power is considered to reveal information on both position and force. Modal power is considered to be one of the defining features of human motion. A motion recognition algorithm based on linear discriminant analysis is proposed to distinguish between similar motions. Haptic information is extracted using a bilateral master-slave system. Then, the observed motion is decomposed in terms of primitive functions in a modal space. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

"DC Micro-grid" is a novel power system using dc distribution in order to provide super high quality electric power. The power is distributed through dc distribution line and converted to required ac or dc voltages by converters placed near loads. The load side converters do not need transformers by choosing proper distributed dc voltage (±170V). The dc distribution line is composed of 3 power lines: +170V line, neutral line and -170V line. The voltages of ±170V have to be balanced to supply high quality power. In this paper, a voltage balancing control method for dc distribution is proposed and studied. Computer simulation results demonstrated that dc micro-grid was able to supply both ac and dc power to loads simultaneously and stably by 3-wire dc distribution and load side converters.

The torsional vibration between metal rolling rolls and a rolling mill motor, may occur in recent days, as a result of higher speed response adjustment for variable speed rolling mill motor drive system. Issues in this paper are focused on excess acceleration value, in tangential direction of the mill motor rotor, which is caused by the motor shaft torsional resonance at the white noise signal superposition to the speed reference signal of the motor drive system for the online transfer function analysis. As a result of the acceleration analysis, the acceleration values in "G" (Relative acceleration value on the basis of Gravity) can be plotted on "Bode-Diagram", which is namely frequency response for the speed signal amplitude transmission ratio. In addition, relation between the white noise amplitude reduction and the transfer function analysis accuracy deterioration is also examined, in this paper. As the amplitude of the white noise decreases, the analysis error increases because of the reduction in the resolution when the amplitude of the white noise signal is small.

The control of conveyance between processes still relies on the engineer's experience. It is difficult to correspond to the change in the conveyance layout due to the expansion and reduction of production and the breakdown of conveyance devices. In this paper, we propose a conveyance control system that can adapt to changes in the conveyance layout and we aim at the improvement of the amount of total conveyance.<br>First of all, the system is divided into the part where the conveyance layout is made a data base and the part where the conveyance control that uses the congestion index is done. Therefore, it is possible to deal flexibly by changing the data base part without changing the conveyance control part when it is necessary to change the conveyance layout suddenly.<br>In all the combinations of the conveyance layout and the turning on pattern used as a result of the simulation, the proposed conveyance control method became a great result by the amount of total conveyance.

This paper proposes a visual servo control method for exploring motion of eye-in-hand robot to recognize a three-dimensional object. The CCD camera attached at the manipulator tip captures the images of the target object, and then the robot varies its own posture with referring the position transitions in the images of the feature points on the object. Our approach for optimal motion is based on the strategy in which the position estimation precision of the feature points in the captured images gets improved when the feature points move widely, and the optimal robot motion provides the widest transitions of the feature points per unit robot motion, so that the robot should be controlled to purse such motion. In the proposed method, the primary feature point is made located at the center of the image, while the other points are moved for achieving the optimal transition in the image. In addition, this paper describes the way to reduce calculation effort for the proposed method. The numerical and physical experiments have been executed with use of 3-DOF planar manipulator. The validity of our approach is confirmed in the several experimental results.

The history of motor technology began with the discovery of electromagnetic induction by Faraday. Various kinds of motors were developed by the recent progress of the fundamental technology (magnetic structure, magnetic material, drive circuit, control method). Especially, motors using the reluctance torque have many advantages and some of them are used as high efficient motors. This paper overviews recent advances of reluctance torque assisted motors such as Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM), Synchronous Reluctance Motor (SynRM) and Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM).
