Rice husks, one of the typical agricultural wastes, consist with 70-75 mass% of organics and 15-20 mass% of amorphous silica. Silica can be obtained by combusting rice husks in air. However, silica purity is reduced by metallic impurities contained in rice husks. To extract high-purity amorphous silica from rice husks, the citric acid leaching process was developed to remove the metallic impurities from rice husks. By optimizing the citric acid solution concentration and combustion temperature of rice husks, completely amorphous silica ashes with 99.5 mass% were obtained. To establish the large-scale equipment to produce high purity amorphous rice husk silica, the process parameters in the citric acid leaching and air combustion were optimized. There was no significant difference of silica purity and the impurity contents of rice husk ashes by using between small-scale and large-scale equipment. Citric acid leached rice husk ashes were employed as the reinforcements of concrete materials. Compressive strength in use of high-purity amorphous silica revealed a higher value compared to the use of silica fume and raw rice husk ashes. The effect of citric acid leached rice husk ashes was high pozzolanic reactivity due to high-purity amorphous silica particles and the large surface area due to their porous structures.

The H-IIB launch vehicle is an upgraded version of the current H-IIA launch capacity, which has two liquid rocket engines (LE-7A) in the first-stage, instead of one for the H-IIA. It has four SRB-As attached to the body, while the standard version of H-IIA had two SRB-As. One of the major design issue of H-IIB launch vehicle is increased prume heating due to clustering two LE-7A engines and four SRB-As, especially the interaction of engine prumes at high altitude. This paper describes the prume analysys method of H-IIB launch vehicle which is based on the flight proven method of the current H-IIA launch.

Large amount of radioactive cesium was emitted from the TEPCO Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant by the accident into atmospheric air, and a part of the radioactivity was brought to the ground by rain and snowfall. The Yamakiya district in Kawamata-machi, Fukushima is specified as the prepared evacuation zone. The authors collected wild mushrooms in this district as samples in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The concentration of radioactive cesium was measured by means of the hyperpure germanium semiconductor detector. The concentrations were ranged from 35 to 600,000 Bq/kg, and were different with points of sampling and kinds. The transfer coefficient of radioactive cesium to most wild mushrooms are lower than 0.5, although some mushroom species concentrate environmental radioactive cesium more than twice.

Fundamentals of fuel cells including polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC), alkaline fuel cell (AFC), molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), are presented. Three types of overpotential, activation overpotential, ohmic overpotential and concentration overpotential, are described. Polarization curves in PEFC and SOFC are also presented for better understanding of dominant factors that determine overall cell performance.

Bio-fuel cell, or microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can convert chemical energy of organic compounds to electric power, with their aerobic degradation to CO2 and water. MFCs are analogous to polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) in terms of the reaction sequences: fuel oxidation, proton transfer and oxygen reduction, whereas MFCs can be also considered as a waste treatment reactor. In this review, in comparison with PEFC, the items explained are the mechanism of MFCs, application of MFCs to wastewater/organic waste (rice straw and excess sludge) disposal, and application of “exoelectrogens” to mediator-less MFCs. Feasibility of MFCs is discussed for designing reactor structures of MFCs as semi-continuous, mediator-less, and single-chambered form.

An ultrahigh vacuum stainless-vessel including only solid samples is used as a “Solid Fusion” vessel. When extremely high purity D2 gas is injected into this stainless-vessel, D2 gas is penetrated into the solid sample as “D+-jet stream” and “Solid Fusion” is generated instantly with 42He and thermal energy as the reaction products. Consequently, the stainless vessel can act as both a “42He generator” and a “Thermal Reactor”. As a result, and excellent actual “Solid Fusion” reactor is established for the first time in the world.

In this study, effect of Ag addition on microstructure of In-48 wt%Sn solder was investigated to improve mechanical properties. The microstructure of In-Sn-Ag solder was formed by β phase, γ phase and two different intermetallic compounds (IMCs) which are Ag2In and AgIn2. Ag2In in In-Sn-Ag solder improves the mechanical strength but deteriorates the ductility. However, AgIn2 enhances the ductility but decreases the mechanical strength. To improve the both mechanical strength and ductility, control of the amount of Ag2In and AgIn2 was found to be important, and 3 wt% Ag addition was found to improve both mechanical strength and ductility of In-48 wt%Sn solder.

H-IIB Launch Vehicle Test Flight (H-IIB TF1) was successfully launched on September 11, 2009 from the Tanegashima Space Center, with carrying the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) Demonstration which transports supplies to the International Space Station (ISS). The H-IIB is an upgraded version of current H-IIA to meet the requirement of HTV launch, and one of the major items to be new developed is the 5.2m-daiametr first-stage tank. The enlargement of propellant tank diameter causes higher load with internal pressure, the state-of-art welding manufacturing technologies, friction stir welding, is adopted in order to increase the high reliability of the tank structure. This paper describes the results of development process of H-IIB tank by applying the friction stir welding to the axial and circumferential directions with the self-reacting tool called “bobbin tool” which eliminates the use of conventional backing metals.
