It has been reported that color perception of bluish lights changes with age because of a considerable decrease of the sensitivity in short-wavelength region caused by the yellowing of the crystalline lens. However there is an opinion that the color perception of aged-people is compensated by chromatic adaptation since the yellowing of the crystalline lens gradually grows across the life-span. In order to clarify the change in color perception caused by aging, I conducted two experiments. First, the 100-hue test of the Japan Color Research Institute was performed to 70 observers aged from 20s to 70s. Second, an experiment of color naming to 16 color samples using Natural Color System was done to 200 observers aged from 10s to 50s. As a result of the 100-hue test, the age-related decline of color discrimination properties to the reddish-purple colors was admitted whereas color discrimination properties to the bluish colors did not dropped. On the other hand, the experiment of color naming showed that there was no age-related change of color perception.

The history, present situation and fireworks contest on the Sumida River are described. Fireworks were displayed originally in 1733 on the Sumida River as the memorial service for the victims of a bad crop and an epidemic. The fireworks display was called "Ryogoku Kawabiraki Hanabi". Since then, the display continued until today though there were several interruptions. Today, the display is called "Sumidagawa Hanabi Taikai", the fireworks of about ten thousands each are displayed at two places on the river and the fireworks contest is held at one of the places simultaneously.

みなとみらい線は, 横浜駅(神奈川県横浜市)からみなとみらい21地区を通り, 元町・中華街までの全長4.1kmの地下鉄として平成16年2月1日に開通した.それぞれの駅は, 「21世紀型の駅」というコンセプトでデザインされている.新高島駅は「海」をモチーフに活気ある街の将来を, 予感させるデザインとし, 建設された5駅の中で最も深く, 地上1階地下5階, 延床面積14701.89m^2という規模である.プラットホーム階(地下5階)はスピード感ある水の流れを表現し, コンコース階(地下2階)は曲線的な水の流れを表現している.また, 道路横断施設階(地下1階)は水の中から見た水面を, 地上上屋は周囲をガラスとして水面を表現している(図1).

JR高松駅はガラス張りのアトリウムが特徴的なコンコースと,各種商業施設からなり,高松の新しいランドマークとして誕生した.階段を利用しなくともホームとコンコースを移動できる平面プランは頭端駅(終着駅)としての特徴を表わし,それを覆う3層吹き抜けの大空間はこの駅施設の目玉となっている.飲食,物販,カルチャースクールなどの施設も充実し,全体としてもハートビル法の認定を受けたバリアフリーデザインのモデル駅でもある.

The effects of simulating dawn lighting with an ordinary ceiling light on the quality of awakening were investigated. The subjects were healthy men, aged 24-27. After sleep for about 7 hours with polysomnographic recordings in a climatic chamber kept at a temperature of 25℃ and a relative humidity of 50%, each subject was awakened by an alarm. For the 30 minutes immediately before the subject was awakened, the illumination in the chamber was gradually increased, simulating the condition of waking up as the sun rises. Alpha attenuation test, measuring blood pressure and awakening feelings were conducted after awakening. The time of sleep stage 2 appearing during the 30 minute simulating dawn lighting was significantly less (p < 0.05; Wilcoxon test) than during typical waking conditions (i.e., waking up in the dark), while the time of stage W was higher (p = 0.0796). The mood after awakening in the simulating dawn lighting condition was significantly better (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the alpha attenuation coefficients and blood pressures after awakening between the two conditions. These results suggest that simulating dawn lighting arouses subjects to light sleep, which makes awakening less sudden and more pleasant. There was no evidence that the light sleep immediately before awakening decreased the subjects' cerebral cortex activity or sympathetic nervous activity after awakening.

私たち人間社会が地球環境問題に直面していると言われるようになって10年以上が経った.地球大気中の二酸化炭素濃度が上昇し続けていて,そのために,地表付近の平均温度がどうも上昇しているらしい……そういうことが言われ出したのは筆者の記憶では1989年ごろである.それを受けて,例えば1992年にはリオデジャネイロで地球環境サミットと呼ばれる会議が行われたり,1997年には,二酸化炭素排出の問題を巡ってCOP3と呼ばれる会議が京都で行われたりした.それらの一方で,例えば1990年ごろには湾岸戦争が,また,つい5ヵ月前にはイラク戦争があって,まさに資源の浪費があった.本来なら排出しなくて済むはずの二酸化炭素が大量に排出され撒き散らされた.劣化ウランなども撒き散らされたらしい.環境破壊は甚だしい.以上のような背景で,私たち人間が生活する場--建築や都市環境空間--の照明がどのようにして成り立っているかを考える……何だか呑気な感じがしないでもない.しかし,本特集号の主題にある'地球環境'のような大きな問題を議論する場合にこそ,誰にとっても関わりある身近な題材から出発して考えを巡らすことが大切だろう.等身大の事柄から出発して考えを展開していくことは,いわゆる地球環境問題や,戦争を含むさまざまな環境破壊を起こさせないための微小ではあるが確実な(倫)理性を私たちの一人ひとりが持つことに,結局のところ最も役立つに違いないと思うのだ.そう考えることにして,人なら誰にとっても身近な照明について踏み込んで考察し,地球という自然の成り立ちに思いを致し,ヒト(人)という自然が持つ原理に倣った照明のあり方を想像してみたい.

When December comes, the Christmas market is held in each European country. Especially, the Federal Republic of Germany is the best place for the Christmas. And, Christmas illumination begins in each German city. Therefore, the city of each place in Germany becomes a very fantastic mood as that result. The landscape of the Christmas and the culture of the Christmas at various places in Germany are introduced by this paper.

The characteristics of human visual sense change widely according to the ambient environment. This study is aimed at measuring, on quantitative terms, the visibility of colored light in dense fog. Visibility was measured with four subjects, each with a normal color vision, using colored Landolt rings. As a result, it was found that in dense fog, the visibility of yellow color was at the highest level, and that of blue color at the lowest level : and the visibility decreased even with a larger particle diameter.

NIIGATA MONOLITH is a comprehensive bridal facility newly built in Niigata prefecture. The ceiling of the banquet room has an inclination of CH:5,700mm to CH:7,300mm, and approximately one thousand transparent acrylic tubes are laid on the ceiling. The challenge was to reduce the running costs including maintenance fees while keeping the ceiling high. HIMEJI MONOLITH is a comprehensive bridal facility built based on an about 80 year-old house by renovating the interior as a guest house. The minimum LED spotlights are used to illuminate the exterior of the building, which received a designation of the Important Building for Landscape of Himeji-shi, Hyogo prefecture.

この施設の大きな特長は天井トラスに埼玉県秩父産の杉を使用した無垢材による工法が用いられていることで, 約1万本の杉材を1本ずつ, 割れ, 反り, 強度試験を経て合格した材料が使用されている.メインアリーナをはじめ, サブアリーナ, 多目的体育室, トレーニング室, 卓球室などで構成されており, 防災やコミュニティ機能も兼ね備えた施設となっている.

Japan does not receive enough solar energy to grow figs. By comparing the received solar energy major fig producing areas of the world and Japan, we have derived the supplemental light energy value, which is the minimum additional light energy necessary for optimal fig maturation. By supplementing natural sunlight with this optimum value by electrical lighting, the fig season in Japan can be lengthened, crop volume increased, and fruit quality improved. The optimum period for fig maturation in Nagoya is from June to September, when the minimum temperature remains above 20℃ in Nagoya, Athens, Izmir, and San Diego. During this same period, however, Athens receives direct sunlight for approximately 1,308hours, while Nagoya gets approximately 638 hours, i.e.about 49% of Athens.These four months also provide average estimated solar energy levels of 17.5 MJ・m^<-2>・day^<-1> for Athens, 15.3MJ・m^<-2>・day^<-1> for San Diego, and 8.8MJ・m^<-2>・day^<-1> for Nagoya. A normal cultivation environment from January to March in winter will require additional supplemental light energy 5.1MJ・m^<-2>・day^<-1> which is derived from the difference in the solar energy between 8.8MJ・m^<-2>・day^<-1> for outdoor maturation in Nagoya and 3.7MJ・m^<-2>・day^<-1> for a green house in winter.

In previous study, we defined the border luminance as space brightness and investigated what determines border luminance in a real environment. We undertook a second study to confirm that perceived brightness of a room is determined solely by border luminance. We also examined the correlation between change in the magnitude of space brightness and change in the border luminance. To investigate these two points, we measured space brightness using three methods: magnitude estimation, space-brightness matching, and border-luminance adjustment. We found that, the border luminance is the same even though the illuminance of the room or the configuration of interior surface reflectance is different, the matched illuminance is the same. The brightness value obtained using the magnitude estimation method was proportional to the 0.56-th power of the border luminance. Our results clearly show that space brightness can be evaluated quantitatively using border luminance adjustment even if the brightness cannot be measured using the horizontal illuminance. Therefore, measuring the border luminance is an effective way to supplement existing photometric systems.

The lighting of the Wonder Wheel Pavilion at the AICHI EXPO 2005, JAPAN was planned with the following in mind :
