This paper deals with the experimental research on the effects of change of wire drawing condition on hardness distribution over the section of drawn wire.Using a Micro-Vickers hardness tester, we tried to investigate the hardness distribution over the cross section of three kinds of carbon steel wires and a brass wire, drawn under several kinds of drawing conditions, as well as the gradual change of hardness over the longitudinal section of carbon steel wires under plastic deformation with half drawn specimen.As the results we have make it clear that the wire with uniform deformation as possible will be obtained by following methods of drawing:(1) with the die of larger radius of curvature of drawing surface than with the die of smaller radius, (2) under high reduction of diameter than low reduction.

This paper describes the hole quality of small diameter drilling in GFRP using two kinds of laser beam machines in order to invent a no-traditional process of drilling in printed wiring board (PWB) as no contact machining. Drilling is performed by a CO2 laser machine and a YAG laser machines and the drilling conditions (assisting gas, output power, irradiation time, wavelength) are varied in order to assess the effect on the hole quality, especially the damage appearing at the hole wall drilled by laser machines. From these results, it is shown that the application of CO2 laser beam is effective on smaller diameter drilling in GFRP. It is important to decrease the total laser irradiation time in order to improve the hole quality.

The three components of skeletal muscle fiber, that is, sarcolemma, myofibril and sarcoplasma, different among themselves in their viscoelastic properties, have been separately studied.A myofibril bundle with properties of living muscle fiber can be separated by removing the sarcolemma of a muscle fiber in liquid paraffine, the smallest sample obtained by this method being about 1μ in diameter.Myofilaments as thin as 100Å in diameter can be separated by spreading out the myofibril bundle on metal net in air.The breaking length of a muscle fiber is 180-200% of its resting length, its breaking stress being 0.5∼5×106 dynes/cm2.The ratio of initial elongation to creep by load is a function of the load itself, for example, the maximum of the ratio is 3 to 2, the load and the breaking stress being 1.5×105 and 5×105dynes/cm2 respectively.The thermal expansion coefficient (α) of a muscle fiber of M. sartorius of Bufo is -10-4∼-10-5, its absolute value being inversely proportional to its birefringence.The length-tension diagram of a myofibril bundle coincides with that of intact muscle fiber, as far as the extension is less than 140% of its resting length.Concerning the time course of creep by loading and the thermo-elasticity, the myofibril bundle and the single muscle fiber resemble each other.The striated pattern with periodical intervals of about 100Å can be electronmicroscopically observed in the separated myofilament in its resting state.This periodical intervals increase to 170% of that in its resting state, when the myofilament is extended.The viscoelasticity of muscle has been discussed on the basis of the results mentioned above and the relevant references.

Formation of corrosion tubercles on carbon steels were carried out in the aerated neutral solutions composed of boric-borate buffer (0.01M) and water with some suspensions of CaCO3 and CaSiO3 powders at pH=7.5-8.8. The solutions containing NO2-, CrO42-, or HS- of less than 50ppm in concentration were also examined. The solution temperature was at 60-65°C.The tubercles thus formed were classfied into three types: the active passive, the general corrosion, and the sulfide initiative, depending on the potential. The active passive-type tubercles formed at the potential range where the second peak of current appeard on the anodic polarization curve. On the other hand, the general corrosion-type tubercles grew at the potentials where general corrosion of steels tested appeard. In the latter case, calcium scale deposited on the steel surface, but the corrosion spots formed partially at which the scale deposition was insufficient.The mechanism for the sulfide initiative-type tubercles is unclear whereas it forms certainly in aerated and neutral solutions containing HS- at the potential range -0.50 to -0.55V vs. Ag/AgCl.

The disturbance of electric field in the vicinity of the test electrode by the Luggin-Haber capillary was studied mathematically and empirically with the current interrupter. The equipotential line near the capillary tip was predicted, and considerable deformation was observed over about one third of the diameter of the capillary. The capillary located close to the surface of the test electrode disturbed the uniform current distribution, and the build-up curve of the oscilloscope trace was deformed. Its critical distance was about twice the diameter of the capillary.

Maintenance problem for infrastructures such as bridge, road, airport, etc., attracts keen interest in modern Japan. We have to cope with repair and maintenance for infrastructures with limited financial resources. In airport pavements, repair works are restricted by daily flight operation, so that efficient maintenance planning is required. In this paper, we try to model deterioration of an existing airport runway, which is composed of 100 units. PRI (Pavement Rehabilitation Index) for each unit is obtained by 3 to 8 times of inspection during around 28 years. PRI is an index to provide an objective evaluation of pavement surface condition, with criteria determined for judging the need for rehabilitation work on runway, taxiway, and apron pavements. Many researches and practitioners use PRI for airport pavement maintenance in Japan. The spatial distribution of deterioration in airfield pavement is not discussed in many previous studies. This study discusses deterioration curve for each unit and feature of spatial distribution. The distribution of deterioration based on PRI and the probability of exceedance of each PRI criteria in future are estimated by the proposed method.
