発達したデュベルノイ腺を持つヘビであるヤマカガシの孵化幼体に様々な大きさのカエルとサカナを飼育下で与え,餌の大きさやサイズが捕食行動に及ぼす影響を調べた.カエルはサカナよりもたやすく捕獲され,処理された.呑み込みの効率はカエルとサカナとで明瞭な違いはなかった.餌の相対的サイズは餌を呑み込む方向と呑み込むときの餌の生死に影響しなかった.サカナは一部が死んでから呑まれ,頭部から呑み込まれる傾向があった.これに対し,カエルはすべて生きたまま呑まれ,呑み込む方向に選好性はなかった.カエルにおいては,呑み込む方向は最初に咬みついた部位に依存する傾向が強かった.どちらの餌においても,餌を呑み込む方向は呑み込み時間に影響しなかった.サカナの生死は処理時間の長さと関係していると考えられた.カエルを頭部から呑み込む傾向がなかったことを除けば,ヤマカガシ孵化幼体はサカナよりもカエルの方がより効率良く捕食できると考えられた.

琉球列島八重山諸島の西表島より,キノボリヤモリ(Hemiphyllodactylus typus typus)の1雌が採集された.これは本種の日本からの最初の記録である.今回採集された標本の外部形態について記載し,検討を加えた.この標本は,本亜種が西表島へ最近移入されたことを示すものと思われる.

We describe a new species of Tylototriton from northwestern Vietnam and northern Thailand based on morphological and molecular evidence. Tylototriton anguliceps sp. nov. is distinguishable from all the other congeners by the bright to dark orange markings on the head, body, and tail, prominent dorsal and dorsolateral ridges (crests) on the head, skeletal connection between maxillary and pterygoid, and unique mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences. Our molecular data show that the new species is nested within the clade comprising T. uyenoi, T. shanjing, T. verrucosus, and T. yangi. The new species is expected to be recorded from other countries in the Indochina region such as southern China, western Myanmar and northern Laos in the future.

We assessed taxonomic relationship of Tylototriton daweishanensis Zhao, Rao, Liu, Li and Yuan, 2012 and T. yangi Hou, Li and Lu, 2012 using mitochondrial DNA sequence data and found them to be as closely related as to be regarded as conspecific. This result, together with available morphological information, strongly indicates that T. daweishanensis is a junior synonym of T. yangi.

Recent phylogenetic studies using mtDNA and allozymes have revealed the presence of large genetic differentiation within a Japanese clawed salamander, Onychodactylus japonicus, suggesting the presence of several cryptic taxa in this species. Based on morphological analyses, we describe one of them from the Tsukuba Mountains of Ibaraki Prefecture, in the Kanto district of eastern Honshu, as a new species, Onychodactylus tsukubaensis. It is a member of the japonicus species complex of Onychodactylus, and differs from the other species of the complex by a relatively short tail, wide head, and large number of vomerine teeth.

A table for the normal stages of the development of the Japanese lungless salamander, Onychodactylus japonicus, is presented. Adult males and females, collected in Hinoémata, Fukushima Prefecture, in the breeding season, were injected with frog pituitaries, and oviposition was induced. The number of eggs laid by one female was 11 on the average. The eggs are pale yellow in color and ca. 5mm in diameter. The temperature of the water in which the materials were kept was maintained at 10±1°C. The progress of development is remarkably slow. Under the present conditions, the embryos hatched at the age of 142 days on the average. In contrast to most amphibian species, the 3rd cleavage is meridional and the 4th one is latitudinal. Under field conditions, the period of larval life is fully 2 years, and the body size of metamorphosing larvae is 7-10cm in total length. The process of development from fertilization till the completion of metamorphosis is divided into 72 stages. External characteristics in each stage are described in tabular form, and illustrated with sketches.

A table for the normal stages of development of a hynobiid salamander, Hynobius nigrescens Stejneger, is presented. The materials used in the present study were collected from a breeding pond in Iwamuro-mura, Niigata Prefecture. The eggs were ca. 2.6mm in diameter. The larvae were fed on Tubifex. Under a constant temperature of 17°C, the larvae metamorphosed at the age of 80 days. and the total length of these metamorphosed animals was 53.4mm on the average. The ratio of body length, measured from the tip of the snout to the posterior angle of the vent, to total length in the metamorphosed animals was 58.3% on the average in 63 individuals. The process of development from just after spawning till the completion of metamorphosis is here divided into 73 stages. External characteristics in each stage are described in tabular form, and illustrated with sketches.

The male and female karyotypes were examined for 10 specimens of the Chinese soft-shelled turtle, Pelodiscus sinensis, from the main islands of Japan and Taiwan by the bone marrow air-dry technique. One specimen of Dogania subplana was also examined karyologically. Although both P. sinensis and D. subplana had 2n=66 chromosomes, they showed an interspecific variation in chromosome morphology. No karyotypical differences were evident between the Japanese and Taiwanese samples of P. sinensis, or within either of them. Comparisons of the present results with previously reported trionychine karyotypes indicate that there are some interspecific and intraspecific variations in centromeric positions of several macrochromosome pairs in this subfamily.
