While teaching a class is the foremost task of an instructor, whether class preparation also counts as part of that duty have been unclearly defined. Yet recently, the Labor Standards Inspection Office issued a recommendation toward major educational institutions to recognize class preparation as labor entitled to payment. This, however, raises course management questions regarding what and how much instructors should actually prepare. Utilizing a various data, this paper discusses how much time is required for Japanese language instructors to conduct effective class preparation.

We conducted a writing activity involving an interview-based report for further communication among students and not for academic or practical purpose. The activity included the following steps: read an interview-based article as a model, choose a theme on which one would like to be interviewed, interview each other, write the first draft of the report, check the interviewee's draft, get comments from other students, and prepare the final report. After the class, in a questionnaire, some students mentioned that they better understood their classmates and enjoyed the activity because they could choose the themes. Moreover, in their reports, the students adopted some expressions of quotation and the writing style of the model article.

In this study, an attitude survey using rating scales was conducted with 111 Japanese language learners. This was done to examine what kind of design is desired for their understanding in terms of Japanese language learning materials. As a result, "underlining" was statistically desired in input enhancement techniques which emphasize the key language form. Also "photos" was statistically rated higher than "drawings." In addition, the results reveal that learners consider "explanation about grammar," "correct usage / example," "incorrect usage / example," "icon / pictogram," "table," "summary," "numbering learning contents," and "captions" as useful to facilitate their understanding. Based on the results, this study proposes a model design of learning material as a draft plan.

Sakura Momoko died last year. She was a great and very famous woman from Shimizu. Nevertheless, the international students who lived in Shimizu did not know anything about her. I used Sakura Momoko as the basis for a one semester Project Work investigation. Results indicated higher levels of class attendance, and increased levels of cooperation and active participation among learners.

The word &quotmentsu exists in both Chinese language and Japanese language. So far, there are lots of studies on the word, most of which are based on the cultural perspective and get to the conclusion that the word &quotmentsu" has cultural difference in the two language. But there is still room for discussion. The meaning and usage of word &quotmentsu" in the Japanese language may be not as the same as that in Chinese language. Nevertheless, &quotmentsu" was not strictly defined in any of previous studies, therefore some researchers may tend to use it to express themselves from their native language system and get to the conclusion that the cultural difference probably causes a difference in the literal meaning. Hereby this thesis aims to contrast the word &quotmentsu" in two aspects according to surveys semantic fields and practical application.

Classes were carried out for beginner learners of Japanese to check the effect that the differences in slide presentation has on the learners' understanding and thinking processes. They were taught using two kinds of methods; one is by presenting the illustration in the slide gradually, the other is showing it all at once. The results of the questionnaire given to the learners suggested that it might promote the understanding and thinking of the learners in the case of the former in the relatively more difficult grammar section, while the latter promotes understanding and thinking in the relatively easier grammar section.

The research was conducted involving eight JSL students for 3 months. The subjects participated in Shadowing Activity (a task of listening the recorded text and repeating it as exactly as possible). The subjects' speech was recorded as they repeated the recorded text. The analysis of the collected data has revealed that (1) there are lots of errors in the repeated text; e.g., overuse of NO and mis-use of WA and GA, and (2) the subjects made production errors even though they heard the Japanese input correctly during the shadowing. The finding indicates that Shadowing Activity could be useful not only for training second language learners' production skill but also as a research tool in investigating the problems of learning such as the phenomena of fossilization.

We earlier created a book and electronic book (e-book) version of &quotHANASHITEMIRANNE SASHIYORI! KUMAMOTOBEN&quot. Since then, we have improved the e-book version to make this teaching material easier to use by more people. In addition, we added an app so that learners can study by themselves easily at any time and any place. The app version includes Kumamoto dialect listening practice and a function to record the learner's pronunciation.

An accurate understanding of the meaning of an example sentence cannot be separated from the example's surrounding context. In instruction fostering comprehension of an example sentence, an accurate understanding of the sentence's meaning must occur in combination with its background context. In this study, advanced learners were asked to rank JLPT N1-level textbook example sentences and reconstruct their contexts. It was shown that examples that are easy to comprehend have high empathy to learners, and there is strong immediacy between understanding of the meaning of the sentence and evocation of its context.

日本語では、「ありがとうございます」と「ありがとうございました」という表現がある。両者の違いは丁寧さの度合いが異なるとか、あるいは感謝の気持ちが現在であるか過去であるか、といったようなことではない。「ありがとうございました」はひとつの場面を終わりにするという話者の意向を表す印である。時制の違いによって場面の切り替えを表す例は、この他にもいろいろある。特に挨拶表現、応答表現などの時制の切り替えが、場面の区切り、会話の区切りの合図として有効な働きをする。小論ではこのような、時制の切り替えがもたらす語用論的効果を述べると共に、この視点が日本語教育の中でも必要かつ重要であることを述べる。

This paper analyzes failed cases of "Error Correction (EC)" by analyzing mundane conversations in Japanese between 2 multilinguals. It has been revealed it can be one of the reasons for EC failure that the identities the participants orient to differ with one another, in other words, L2 users do not always orient to "learner" identity when L1 users orient to "teacher" identity. The findings suggest that learning can achieve maximum results only by the learning process being embedded in mutual understanding enhancement.

It is very important for a Japanese language learner to have adequate skills to participate in Japanese casual conversations, as it influences on creating and expanding the human network in the target languagesociety. In this paper, casual conversation in contact situation held by three women from Taiwan, China and Japan is compared to the casual talks held by three pairs of female native speakers of Japanese. As the result, the sequence organizations themselves are not very different from one another, however, less frequent evaluation and narrative are observed in the contact situation than in the native speakers'conversations.

There is a facility called the Academic Achievement Center (AAC), where the presenter belongs to. At the AAC, trained student tutors provide the main source of academic self-study support through peer-tutoring which includes active listening and the facilitation of tutee's self-efficacy. From October to December of 2016, every week for an hour, I had tutoring sessions with a Japanese Language learner who has dyslexia. This is a practice report of the tutoring sessions that supported the learner to clarify her learning difficulty of Japanese Language, while also encouraging her to achieve her goals.

Reading comprehension requires reading speed and quantity in order to have practical meaning. However, there is rarely time to spare in class for extensive reading, let alone covering appreciative reading. Appreciative reading encourages the acquisition of various ways of reading, making reading meaningful. Therefore, a novel reading section adopting an appreciative reading approach has been included in the reading comprehension course. This research reports on the reading appreciation practice of a class using a novel at advanced level, and examines notes and points for evaluation and improvement from the survey results.

In intermediate and advanced grammar classes for foreign Japanese-language teachers at the Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, improvement of the teaching ability is an important objective, because the trainees are not only learners but also teachers of Japanese. The trainers give variety to explanations and exercises in teaching, so that the foreign trainees can get tips for teaching grammar in their own countries by experiencing a variety of instructions by themselves. This paper discusses the practices in grammar classes during the long-term training courses for foreign teachers in 2014, using the class records and the participant questionnaire as references, to organize the practices from the viewpoint of variation in grammar teaching.

I have been applying the sumo-themed gamification &quotNihongo Banzuke" in my Japanese class since 2016 Fall Semester to motivate my students. This gamification allows students to level up as sumo wrestlers by earning points from tasks they complete inside and outside of the classroom. According to my survey, it succeeded in motivating a few students and making them more interested in Japanese culture. However, a significant gap remained between engaged students and disengaged students' level of commitment to the game. In 2017 Spring Semester, I modified some elements of the game and examined how it affected students' motivation and their learning strategies.

We analyzed learners' feedback from a one-week trial of a newly-developed vocabulary learning application. This application, designed to help teach Japanese academic words for understanding university lectures, consists of exercises, where the learner answers target words after reading definitions. Results from a questionnaire survey showed that learners found the selection of target words and use of exercises to be good practice and an efficient use of time. On the other hand, they requested audio representation of the words. This will be considered for future improvements in order to develop a more autonomous and efficient learning environment.

In this presentation, we report on the development of a word level checking system for determining word levels in a text. The Word Familiarity Checker was developed using data found in Special Characteristics of Japanese Vocabulary (Amano & Kondo, 1999) and ranks all words in a text into one of five levels depending on the degree of familiarity. It also creates word lists corresponding to each level of difficulty, and shows a total count for the number of words from the combined lists. This checker will be available on-line in the near future at the Japanese Language Reading Tutorial System "Reading Tutor". (http://language.tiu.ac.jp)

This study examines how foreign residents of Japan learn Japanese language and how their study is connected with their social participation. This study focuses on the cases of three employees who are thought to be successful in acquiring Japanese language and participating in Japanese society. They have improved their Japanese language in a natural setting through autonomous learning in their daily lives. The study outlines that their social participation is not limited to formal language study.
