Itch is an unpleasant sensation associated with various disease, and can trigger scratching. Management of itch and scratching is important for treatment of disease. Therefore, quantitative and objective evaluation of itch and scratching is demanded. This work aims to develop the sensor system for evaluating the scratching motion. For the purpose, we focus on scratch sounds induced by scratching motion and, propose a nail mounted sensor system . In the sensor system a small microphone is attached on a nail for measuring scratching sounds. First, for investigating the relationship between the scratch sounds and the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion, the artificial skin model made of polyurethane was used as a scratched object. The measurement system that can measure force and a motion of fingertip during scratching was constructed. Using the measurement system, various kinds of human scratch motions and sounds were measured. By signal processing of the scratch sounds, the several sound features were calculated and characteristics of scratch motions were extracted. Then, correlation coefficients between sound features and scratch motion properties were calculated. From the results, two pairs of the parameters were found as the most adequate parameter pair to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion. And using these parameters, “scratch evaluation map” was proposed as a method to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion. From the results, it was found that the developed sensor system has possibility to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of human scratch motion by the scratch sounds.

Motions estimation utilizing EEG can develop devices supporting the elderly and disabilities. This paper investigated a possibility of limb motion estimation using Bereitschafts Potential (BP). BP means voltage variation of EEG just before motions. To estimate, neural network was introduced. Three types of processed signal were used as the input. The types of signal processing were FFT, increment and normalization. The best signal processing of them was normalization, and the accuracy rate was 89.0%.

In general, shellfish contain a number of bacteria and viruses that can cause food poisoning. However, because raw food is so delicious, some people take the risk of eating it, and a certain number of cases occur every year. The bacteria that contaminates shellfish are known to concentrate in an organ called the digestive gland. If the organs can be sterilized with pinpoint heat, it will be possible to eat them safely while still enjoying the taste of eating raw food. Therefore, we investigated a method of heat sterilization of the digestive gland with pinpoint accuracy using a CO2 laser. As a result, 99.5% of the bacteria were sterilized.

Mouthguard type sensors have been developed to monitor the healthcare-related information. In order to realize a battery-less sensor system, we propose a sheet form generator driven by occlusal force to supply electrical power for mouthguard type sensors. The proposed generator is made by stacking an electret and a dielectric elastomer. It converts mechanical energy applied by occlusion to electrical energy by electrostatic induction. In this study, the generator sheet was designed and its ability of power generation was evaluated experimentally. The prototype generator achieved 6.2 μW under the force equivalent to occlusal force. The generated power was 190 times as large as that of piezoelectric type. Although the achieved power is not sufficient to provide energy for mouthguard sensors so far, the output power will be improved by optimizing shape of dielectric elastomer and surface voltage of electret. The experimental results sufficiently support the possibility to realize the battery-less sensor system.

Lithium ion batteries have higher energy density. Recently, lithium ion batteries are beginning to be utilized in industrial applications. As for the lithium ion batteries in industrial applications, many different performances are required as well as energy density. It is important to develop according to the own requirement for their application. Energy density of Lithium ion batteries using LTO anode is smaller than that of conventional ones. But the batteries with LTO anode have unique features. In this reports, the features and application of lithium ion batteries using LTO anode is explained.

There is a method to excite by a square wave as a simple method of the brushless DC motor drive. The simplest method is 120 ° excitation method used the Hall sensor output. But the method has part inferior in terms of efficiency. However, the efficiency can be clearly improved by extending excitation angle or advancing current phase angle, in spite of square wave excitation. In this paper, we measure the motor efficiency using these methods, and inspect their validness experimentally.

Typically, the difference between electromagnetic induction and magnetic resonant coupling is ambiguous. However, these two technologies are seamlessly connected. In this paper, the superiority of magnetic resonant coupling over electromagnetic induction, as well as the magnetic flux distinctive features, are demonstrated and discussed by comparing four circuit topologies. It is shown that only the S-S topology can achieve both high power and maximum efficiency and that the magnetic flux possesses unique characteristics.

Transformers used in switching power supplies can be reduced in size by increasing the frequency. However, transformer loss increases with higher frequencies, which hinders higher efficiency. Therefore, transformer using interleaved winding is being considered. The authors consider the reduction of copper loss in the planar transformer for LLC resonant converter using interleaved winding. It was confirmed by analysis that the AC resistance was reduced by 55.4 % from 217.6 mΩ to 97.1 mΩ by applying interleaved winding. In addition, an interleaved planar transformer with a substrate pattern as a winding was manufactured, and through experiments, the efficiency of an LLC resonant converter using a transformer with an interleaved winding was measured, and the copper loss reduction effect of the transformer was demonstrated.

Authors investigated whether the absolute sound pressure in the ultrasonic cleaning machine can be measured by fiber optic probe hydrophone (FOPH) under cavitation. Since the intensity on the cavitation bubble collapse is high in the frequency range of about 30 to 100 kHz, the sound pressure measurement using FOPH was applied to ultrasonic cleaning machine with the use of a submerged ultrasonic transducer with frequency of 35.5 kHz. In the case of cavitation bubble collapse occurs frequently, it is confirmed that fundamental and harmonic components can be measured by FOPH. And also, the sound pressure distribution was compared to the analysis result using finite element method.

We have proposed a current superimposition variable flux machine for traction motors. The torque-speed characteristics of this machine can be controlled by increasing or decreasing the DC current which is superimposed on the AC current. However, because of noises and the change of coil resistances, the DC current was difficult to apply constantly. In this paper, we propose a DC current control method and verify the effectiveness by carrying out measurements on a prototype. First, the structure and control method are described. Next, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by using FEA. Finally, the N-T characteristics are measured on a prototype.

This paper presents the development of high efficiency (IE5-class) industrial motor with an amorphous core for large capacity applications. Interest in saving energy increases on a global scale, and the high efficiency of the motor attracts attention. As for the motor of the field of industry, legal regulation to IEC standard is promoted in each country. We developed the magnetic characteristic evaluation technology and highly precise analysis design technique in the motor to reduce a loss more from the IE4 efficiency class. We found core structure to reduce the loss of the amorphous metal core, and the trial motor was able to achieve an efficiency class of IE5 by applying it.

This paper reports a novel system that real-timely detects the respiration and the heartbeat during sleep for the purpose of early diagnosis of Sleep Apnea Syndromes. Real-time discrimination of the signal components related to the respiration and the heartbeat was realized using the Independent Component Analysis from the observed signals of PVDF films, which are placed on the bed under the bed sheet. Body movement is taken into consideration in order to prevent the system from divergence and to improve the discrimination accuracy. Efficacy of the system is testified through experiments.

We propose a novel magnetic gear with a high torque density and a huge gear ratio despite the small number of magnet poles. This magnetic gear combines a magnetic flux harmonics gear with a magnetic paradox planetary gear by replacing all planetary gears with steel pole pieces. Its structure and operating principle are described, and the effectiveness of the proposed gear is verified by 3-D finite element analysis.

This paper describes the effect of power supply noise on the acoustic noise and pan vibration when making use of the IH (Induction Heating) cooker. Recently, due to the spread of power electronics device, noise superimposed on the AC power supply is a problem. It has been reported that the acoustic noise provides discomfort feeling when using the IH cooker. Other studies have concluded that the vibration of a pan due to the induction heating is the noise source. So, we started our study on the noise from a pan when making use the IH cooker. Furthermore, we clarify the influence of power source noise on the acoustic noise and pan’s vibration. We made an experiment to clarify this influence. As a result, we clarified that power source noise has influenced acoustic noise and pan’s vibration.

This paper presents a new structure of bone conduction speaker. It is smaller than the conventional structure by removing an extra space. The magnetic path of this structure is not wasteful because the coil case is attached a cover and this structure uses the magnetic material as the vibrating plate. This structure operates by flowing the audio current into the voice coil. That reason is the change of magnetic attractive force between the magnetic pole of yoke and magnet. The authors revealed various characteristics of this structure by the electromagnetic field analysis and structural analysis by using the 3-dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM). As the result of electromagnetic analysis, the leakage flux of this structure is lower than the conventional structure by 55.2 %. As the result of structural analysis, the sound pressure level (SPL) of this structure is higher than the conventional structure by 12.6 %. Consequently, the performance of this structure is improved.

In this paper, a technique of magnetostatic field analysis for structural models with defect of arbitrary inclination angle is presented by adding a function obtained from conformal mapping to the approximate potential function based on the conventional FEM scheme. In this technique, geometry of the defect is not explicitly expressed on the orthogonal grid type FEM mesh but held as function within the analysis program. Since the change of the defect shape is reflected in that function, it becomes possible to use the original mesh without being changed. The magnetic flux density distribution around an inclined defect obtained by this presented technique showed good agreement with that from FEM analysis.

Traditional ways of using plasma for medical application are blood coagulation and sterilization and etc. Recently, plasma has been used for medical treatment at Drexel University in USA. In their study, sever burn has been treated by using plasma irradiation. If plasma medicine is established, it is possible to start new regenerative medicine. They study therapies by using plasma irradiation, but the examination of safety for living body is not enough. Therefore, in this study, I investigate the effect of plasma irradiation treatment for the living body. The first step of my study, I report the changing of the Cardiovascular System by plasma inhalation.
