[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of high heeled shoes on balance ability and walking on healthy women. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty healthy female subjects, without orthopedic history of the lower extremity were selected for the present study. The 3 cm, 6 cm, and 9 cm shoes were worn according to the prescribed order to perform a balance and walking test. [Results] Significant difference was shown after the experiment, in comparison of the groups in all variance, and as the result of post hoc test. Time, anterior-posterior length and medial-lateral length of balance variables as well as velocity of walking variables showed a significant increase between 3 cm and 6 cm, 6 cm and 9 cm, 3 cm and 9 cm. In addition, the balance index of the balance variables as well as the step length and single support ratio of the walking variables showed a significant decrease between 3 cm and 6 cm, 6 cm and 9 cm, 3 cm and 9 cm. [Conclusion] It was found that the higher the shoe heel height, the lower the balance and the less the efficiency of walking.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of virtual reality training using Nintendo Wii on balance and walking for stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] Forty stroke patients with stroke were randomly divided into two exercise program groups: virtual reality training (n=20) and treadmill (n=20). The subjects underwent their 40-minute exercise program three times a week for eight weeks. Their balance and walking were measured before and after the complete program. We measured the left/right weight-bearing and the anterior/posterior weight-bearing for balance, as well as stance phase, swing phase, and cadence for walking. [Results] For balance, both groups showed significant differences in the left/right and anterior/posterior weight-bearing, with significant post-program differences between the groups. For walking, there were significant differences in the stance phase, swing phase, and cadence of the virtual reality training group. [Conclusion] The results of this study suggest that virtual reality training providing visual feedback may enable stroke patients to directly adjust their incorrect weight center and shift visually. Virtual reality training may be appropriate for patients who need improved balance and walking ability by inducing their interest for them to perform planned exercises on a consistent basis.

[Purpose] The purpose of the present study was to examine cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults regularly engaging in synchronized swimming-exercise. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-three female synchronized swimmers ranging in age from 49 to 85 years were recruited for the present study. The duration of synchronized swimming experience ranged from 1 to 39 years. The control group consisted of 36 age- and gender-matched community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults (age range: 49 to 77 years). Cognitive function was evaluated using the Japanese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-J) and compared between the synchronized swimmers and control participants. [Results] No significant differences in mean total MoCA-J scores were observed between the synchronized swimmers and control participants (23.2 ± 3.1 and 22.2 ± 3.6, respectively). Twenty-nine subjects in the control group and 17 in the synchronized swimming group scored below 26 on the MoCA-J, indicative of mild cognitive impairment. Significant differences in delayed recall—but not in visuospatial/executive function, naming, attention, language, abstraction, or orientation—were also observed between the two groups. [Conclusion] The results of the present study suggest that synchronized swimming has beneficial effects on cognitive function, particularly with regard to recent memory.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of scapula movement on neck alignment and the muscles in patients with forward head posture, who has the structural changes around the neck caused from the forward head posture, when scapular stabilization exercise is applied. [Subjects and Methods] A sample of 30 patients with forward head posture were recruited and participated in an intervention for 30 minutes a day, three times per week for 4 weeks. Fifteen patients were assigned to the scapular stabilization exercise group and the remaining 15 were assigned to the neck stabilization exercise group. Before the intervention, the craniovertebral angle (CVA), cranial rotation angle (CRA), and muscle activity of the muscles around the neck were measured. Four weeks later, these 3 factors were re-measured and analyzed. [Results] Within-group changes in CVA and CRA were observed in both groups and were statistically significant. Only the CVA group had a statistically significant between-group differences. Within-group changes in muscular activity were significant differences in all groups. Between groups, the lower back trapezius and serratus anterior showed statistically significant differences. [Conclusion] Scapular stabilization brought about improvement in posture through activation of the neck muscles, the lower trapezius, and the serratus anterior. Therefore, the intervention has a positive effect on neck alignment by reducing the compensatory movements of the muscles involved in forward head posture. Structural changes are observed.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to examine the changes in sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) activity when using a cervical support pillow (CSP) and to determine the pillow’s effect on satisfaction in asymptomatic participants. [Subjects and Methods] This study followed a cross-over design and the order of the measurements was counterbalanced. Twenty asymptomatic participants were positioned supine for 5 minutes by using either a CSP or a general pillow (GP) while the activity of the SCM was measured using surface electromyography. [Results] The CSP significantly decreased the activity of the SCM compared with the GP, and satisfaction after use of the CSP was significantly greater than that after use of the GP. [Conclusion] This study suggests that the CSP may be effective in preventing unnecessary neck muscle activation during sleep in asymptomatic people.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of continuous knee joint traction treatment on the pain and quality of life of patients with degenerative gonarthritis. [Subjects and Methods] Continuous knee joint traction treatment was administered to 59 year-old man and 62 year-old woman diagnosed with degenerative gonarthritis for 20 minutes, once a day, five times a week for 4 weeks. Pain and quality of life were measured using the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the short form 36-item health survey (SF-36), respectively. [Results] The VAS score of the male patient before treatment was 8 points but it decreased to 1 point after treatment, and SF-36 score increased from 81 points before treatment to 93 points after treatment. In addition, the VAS score of the 62 year-old female patient was 7 points before treatment but it decreased to 2 points after treatment, and SF-36 score increased from 78 points before treatment to 96 points after treatment. [Conclusion] The purpose of the study was to report 2 cases of patients with degenerative gonarthritis of the knee who received continuous knee joint traction.

[Purpose] To establish the test-retest reliabilities, minimal detectable change of the Short form Barthel Index and associations with stroke-specific impairments. [Subjects and Methods] The Short form-Barthel Index assessment was tested on 24 chronic stroke patients twice, 7 days apart. A relative reliability index (ICC2,1), Weighted Kappa Coefficients was used to examine the level of agreement of test-retest reliability for SF-BI, Absolute reliability indices, including the standard error of measurement and the minimal detectable change. The validity was demonstrated by spearman correlation of SF BI-total score with Postural Assessment Scale for Storke, Fugl Meyer Assessment. [Results] There was excellent agreement between test-retest for individual items of BI and total score ICC2,1=0.91 and it all showed acceptable SEM and MDC were 2.83 score, 7.84 score respectively. The item-to-total correlations were all significant, ranging from r=0.83–0.92. SF-BI showed good internal consistency. Individual items also possessed high internal consistency 0.82–0.86. The SF-BI and total score were demonstrated high concurrent validity with the PASS, FMA. [Conclusion] This study has demonstrated that the SF-BI is a useful instrument with high test-retest reliability, Absolute reliability indices, internal consistency and validity.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of trunk stabilization circuit exercise using a rubber mat on the thickness and white area index of the transverse abdominis in college students in their 20’s. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group. Those exercises were provided to twenty eight healthy adults in their 20s for four weeks and the thickness of transverse abdominis was measured before study and after 4 weeks. [Results] There were significant differences in interaction between two groups. Paired t-test for thickness and white area index of transverse abdominis showed statistically significant differences to experimentals than controls. Independent t-test for white area index of transverse abdominis also showed statistically significant differences to experimentals than controls. [Conclusion] In conclusion, there was statistically significant difference between the effects of trunk stabilization circuit exercises on back muscles according to types of the surface, and it is expected that this result will be used as a basic data in studies of abdominal muscle stabilization in the future.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of lumbar stabilization exercise and sling exercise on lumbosacral region angle, lumbar muscle strength, pain scale of patients with chronic low back pain. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects of this study were 29 chronic low back pain patient women who were selected among participants in exercise class at K Region Health Promotion Center in South Korea and were randomly assigned to the lumbar stabilization exercise group (n=10), sling exercise group (n=10), and the control group (n=9). Both lumbar stabilization and sling exercise programs were executed for 60 minutes, three times a week, for 12 weeks. Before and after exercise we measured lumbosacral region angle (lumbar lordosis angle, lumbosacral angle, sacral inclination angle), lumbar muscle strength, and pain scale in all subjects. Two-way analysis of variance was conducted to analyze experimental data. In order to analyze the interaction effect, we conducted paired t-test before and after treatment. [Results] Lumbar stabilization exercise group and sling exercises group did not affect lumbar lordosis angle, lumbosacral angle and sacral inclination angle. Whereas the lumbar flexion muscle strength and lumbar extension muscle strength significantly increased in the lumbar stabilization exercise group and sling exercise group. The flexibility increased in the lumbar stabilization exercise group and sling exercise group. The pain scale decreased in the lumbar stabilization exercise group and sling exercise group. [Conclusion] Both lumbar stabilization exercise and sling exercises are useful therapeutic approaches to chronic back pain.

[Purpose] This study aims to identify the immediate effects of taping therapy on knee pain and depression among patients with degenerative arthritis. [Subjects and Methods] In total, 32 patients with degenerative arthritis were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the experimental group that underwent taping therapy and the control group that underwent regular treatment (16 patients per group). In the experimental group, therapeutic tape was wrapped all around the knee joint. Pain and depression were measured using the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), respectively. [Results] The intra-group comparison showed significant differences in VAS and BDI for the experimental group. The intergroup comparison showed that the differences in VAS and BDI within the experimental group appeared significant relative to the control group. [Conclusion] It was observed that taping therapy showed an immediate effect in decreasing knee pain and depression among patients with degenerative arthritis.

[Purpose] The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of dysphagia therapy in an old man with difficulty swallowing in the oral and pharyngeal phases. [Subjects and Methods] The subject was a 72-year-old man with no history of neurological disorders. He was admitted to local hospital because of the complaint of swallowing difficulty. The interventions performed were electrical stimulation and conventional dysphagia therapy. We assessed the tongue and lip muscle strengths. Swallowing function was evaluated by using the videofluoroscopic dysphagia and penetration-aspiration scales. [Results] After the intervention, the tongue and lip muscle strengths increased from 35 to 39 kPa and from 18 to 23 kPa, respectively. Moreover, the oral and pharyngeal phases of the videofluoroscopic dysphagia scale were improved. Furthermore, aspiration decreased from 4 to 2 points in the penetration-aspiration scale. [Conclusion] Our results suggest that electrical stimulation and conventional dysphagia therapy were effective in improving the swallowing function in an elderly individual with dysphagia.

[Purpose] To determine the effects of a 12-week intervention consisting of marching in place and chair rising daily exercise on activities of daily living and functional mobility (ability to quickly rise from a chair and walk) in frail older adults. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty-one participants were divided into exercise (n=18, age=77.6 ± 7.2 years; 11 males, 7 females) and non-exercise (n=13, age=79.6 ± 7.7 years; 7 males, 6 females) groups. The exercise group performed 12 weeks of training, 7 days per week, and 20 minutes per session. The exercise program consisted of low to moderate intensity marching in place and chair rising movements. The speed of movements was gradually increased over time. The Barthel index, mean power during chair stand, and time to complete a 10-m walk were assessed before and after the intervention. [Results] Significant improvements were noted in the exercise group compared to the non-exercise group for the Barthel Index (11.6%), mean power (33%), and 10-M walk (14.6%) with a medium effect size, and relative mean power (power/body mass) (32.9%) with a large effect size. [Conclusion] The progressive marching in place and chair rising exercise intervention appears to be effective in improving activities of daily living and functional mobility among frail older adults.

[Purpose] This study aimed to clarify the effects of Capacitive and Resistive electric transfer (CRet) on changes in muscle flexibility and lumbopelvic alignment after fatiguing exercise. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-two healthy males were assigned into either the CRet (n=11) or control (n=11) group. Fatiguing exercise and CRet intervention were applied at the quadriceps muscle of the participants’ dominant legs. The Ely test, pelvic tilt, lumbar lordosis, and superficial temperature were measured before and after exercise and for 30 minutes after intervention. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance, with Tukey’s post-hoc multiple comparison test to clarify within-group changes and Student’s t-test to clarify between-group differences. [Results] The Ely test and pelvic tilt were significantly different in both groups after exercise, but there was no difference in the CRet group after intervention. Superficial temperature significantly increased in the CRet group for 30 minutes after intervention, in contrast to after the exercise and intervention in the control group. There was no significant between-group difference at any timepoint, except in superficial temperature. [Conclusion] CRet could effectively improve muscle flexibility and lumbopelvic alignment after fatiguing exercise.

[Purpose] This study investigated the frequency effect of physical and occupational therapy on activities of daily living performance in children with cerebral palsy. [Subjects and Methods] A total of 162 children with cerebral palsy who attended a convalescent or rehabilitation center for disabled individuals or a special school for physical disabilities in South Korea participated in this study. The Pediatric Evaluation Disability Inventory was used to collect data on activities of daily living performance according to physical therapy frequency based on neurodevelopmental therapy for 1 year. [Results] The relationships between physical therapy frequency and activities of daily living performance (mobility, social function, and total functional skill) and between occupational therapy frequency and activities of daily living performance (social function and total functional skill) were significant. There was no significant difference in activities of daily living performance according to physical therapy frequency. The difference in the activities of daily living performance according to occupational therapy frequency was significant for social function. [Conclusion] Intensive occupational therapy was more effective in improving activities of daily living performance in children with cerebral palsy. In particular, their social function further improved with intensive physical therapy.

[Purpose] An estimation model of the knee and ankle joint angles during the extension phase was proposed in the previous study. However, it had limited use because of the fixed initial lower limb angle before standing up. This study aimed to propose a new estimation model of the initial lower limb angle to improve the angle estimation during extension phase. [Subjects and Methods] Seven healthy male volunteers were enrolled. The new estimation model approximated the initial lower limb angle using a force sensor plate that measured the plantar pressure of the subjects. The estimated angle and force were compared to those obtained by a motion capture system and force plate. [Results] The new estimation model of initial lower limb angle showed no significant difference compared with the true values obtained by motion capture, except for the subject who had a greater foot-pressure measurement error compared with the force plate measurement, with maximum errors of 5.98° and 6.31°, respectively. [Conclusion] The proposed model in this study can estimate the initial lower limb angle before standing and can be applied to the angle estimation model during the extension phase of the standing-up movement.

[Purpose] This study was to investigate differences in the level of activity of the external oblique (EO), internal oblique (IO), and multifidus (MF) muscles with deep breathing in three sitting postures. [Subjects and Methods] Sixteen healthy women were recruited. The muscle activity (EO, IO, MF) of all subjects was measured in three sitting postures (slumped, thoracic upright, and lumbo-pelvic upright sitting postures) using surface electromyography. The activity of the same muscles was then remeasured in the three sitting postures during deep breathing. [Results] Deep breathing significantly increased activity in the EO, IO, and MF compared with normal breathing. Comparing postures, the activity of the MF and IO muscles was highest in the lumbo-pelvic upright sitting posture. [Conclusion] An lumbo-pelvic upright sitting posture with deep breathing could increase IO and MF muscle activity, thus improving lumbo-pelvic region stability.

[Purpose] This study aimed to investigate the effects of upper extremity-oriented intensive one-sided and double-sided dribbling on the postures of basketball playing children during the period of their basic training. [Subjects] Forty male children registered for a summer basketball training course held in Isparta, Turkey, voluntarily participated in the study. [Methods] The children were formed into two equal groups: a single dribbling group, and a double dribbling group. Both groups were subject to daily training for 1.5 hours during a period of 10 weeks. Anterior and lateral posture were analysed before and after the training period. Symmetrical differences were studied in the anterior analysis, while angular ones were examined in the lateral one. [Results] Before the training period, no significant differences were found between the two groups in either the anterior or lateral posture tests (p>0.05). Following the training, however, a significant difference with regard to shoulder and chest regions was observed between the groups in the anterior analysis (p<0.05). On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the post-training lateral test results (p>0.05). [Conclusion] Intensive one-sided dribbling training was thus observed to be effective in the asymmetrical formation of the dominant one-sided shoulder and chest regions of basketball playing children. In accordance with these data, rather than one-sided dribbling exercises, double-sided dribbling ones are recommended, because this can be said to be more beneficial for the children's posture.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of lumbar stabilization exercises using flexi-bar (FB) on pain, functional disability, transverse abdominis muscle (TrA) activation capacity and thickness in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-seven patients were randomly assigned to an experimental (14 patients performing stabilization exercises with flexi-bar (FB)) or control (13 patients performing stabilization exercises) group. The patients in both groups then underwent stabilization exercises with or without FB 30 min/day, 3 times a week, for 6 weeks. The main outcome measures were perceived disability based on the pain, Oswestry disability index (ODI), TrA activation capacity and thickness. [Results] Both groups showed improved ODI, VAS, and TrA activation capacity performed for 6 weeks in patients with CLBP, but all outcomes, except for TrA thickness, showed greater improvements in patients following stabilization exercises with FB than following stabilization exercises. [Conclusion] Based on the above results, lumbar stabilization exercises with FB could restoring pain, functional disability and improving TrA activation capacity in CLBP patients.

[Purpose] To translate and culturally adapt the Örebro Musculoskeletal Screening Questionnaire (ÖMSQ-12) into Japanese (ÖMSQ-12-J), and to preliminarily investigate practicality from the clinicians’ perspectives, and determine inter-session reliability. [Subjects and Methods] This study included four phases: cross-cultural adaptation (Phases 1–2); survey among 14 clinicians (two medical doctors and 12 physiotherapists) about the practicality of using the questionnaire in six perspectives (speed of evaluation/treatment; capacity to detect patients with yellow flags; attitude towards management with bio-psycho-social perspectives; quality of evaluation/treatment; considerations of communications with patients at history-taking, physical assessments and interventions; and general clinical usefulness) based on their experiences with patients (Phase 3); and investigation of inter-session reliability among 50 patients with musculoskeletal disorders (Phase 4). [Results] The ÖMSQ-12-J was developed in Phases 1–2 using the recommended international guidelines for cultural adaptation and translation. In Phase 3, most responses were in the 3-positive options (35.7–78.6%). In Phase 4, the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient for each item ranged from 0.71–0.99 and 0.92 for the total score. [Conclusion] This study developed the ÖMSQ-12-J, which has preliminary evidence of good practicality and moderate-strong inter-session reliability. Further investigation is required to determine the predictive and prognostic capacity within a problematic musculoskeletal Japanese population.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the kinematic analysis of trunk and pelvis movement during gait and standing as measured by two smartphones (in the present study, we used iPod touches because of their weight). [Methods] Thirty-eight healthy adults (mean age, 21.4 ± 1.2 years) were instructed to stand and walk on a treadmill at three different speeds. The tilt angle of the trunk and pelvis were measured using both an iPod touch and an optoelectronic motion capture system (Optotrak). [Results] The error between the iPod touch and Optotrak was small during standing and walking at low speed. However, as the walking speed was increased, the error between the iPod touch and Optotrak increased. There were no significant differences between the test and retest measurement values of each device, nor were there any significant differences between the days of the analyses. [Conclusions] The iPod touch has good accuracy, since the variations in the test and retest and for different days were small. This suggests that the iPod touch can be used instead of the Optotrak for the kinematic analysis of trunk and pelvis movement at low walking speeds.
