A numerical method to integrate the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (TDHFB) equations with Gogny interaction is proposed. The feasibility of the TDHFB code is illustrated by the conservation of the energy, particle numbers, and center of mass in the small amplitude vibrations of 20O . The TDHFB code is applied to the isoscalar quadrupole and/or isovector dipole vibrations in the linear (small amplitude) region in oxygen isotopes, 18, 20, 22, 24O , titanium isotopes, 44, 50, 52, 54Ti , neon isotope, 26Ne , and magnesium isotopes, 24, 34Mg . The isoscalar quadrupole and isovector dipole strength functions are calculated from the expectation values of the isoscalar quadrupole and isovector dipole moments.

This article presents a test development project for classroom speaking assessment. With the aim of enhancing and specifically easing the process of test preparation and administration and generating positive washback effects on learning, we developed a semi-direct speaking test called the Story Retelling Speaking Test (SRST). Although a story retelling technique has already been widely recognized as a teaching activity, its use for speaking assessment has not been fully studied. Thus, the article discusses the potentiality of using this technique for the SRST and reports its pilot administration to 43 examinees. As a result, the high practicality of the test was confirmed at the test construction and implementation stages. In addition, the questionnaire distributed to the examinees yielded generally positive results regarding their perception toward the test usefulness and the appropriateness of the test procedures and task difficulty. With regard to the appropriateness of the texts, the examinees perceived that the retelling of stories was influenced most by text content and then by text length; however, these two factors appear to be interrelated. On the basis of these responses, we have suggested some revisions of the SRST and future validation and reliability studies.

The authors demonstrated a new method for inducing enormous shrinkage in single-walled carbon nanotube bundles by applying low energy electron beam irradiation along with supersonic vibration, and a maximum shrinkage rate of −100% cm2/C was obtained under electron acceleration of 1 keV. The characteristic feature of the shrunken single-walled carbon nanotubes was a wavy deformation that affected the entire bundle. The authors believe that a uniaxial stress induced by the supersonic vibration broke the equilibrium of the internal stress and allowed the uniform accumulation of defects under low energy electron beam excitation. The wavy deformation of the single-walled carbon nanotubes resulted in the enormous shrinkage of the bundle.

In this paper, we develop an algorithm for minimizing the L q norm of a vector whose components are linear fractional functions, where q is an arbitrary positive integer. The problem is a kind of sum-of-ratios optimization problem, and often occurs in computer vision. In that case, it is characterized by a large number of ratios and a small number of variables. The algorithm we propose here exploits this feature and generates a globally optimal solution in a practical amount of computational time.

What role does water play in the self-assembly of soft materials? To understand the correlation between the hydration state and the various self-assembled structures of a nonionic surfactant, terahertz time-domain spectroscopy has been performed for a C(12)E(5) solution with complementary use of small-angle x-ray scattering. Precise observations of the hydration state show clearly that transitions of the hydration state are accompanied by structural phase transitions of the surfactant from hexagonal to micelle to lamellae. These transitions of hydration state suggest that water is not a homogeneous solvent, and the interaction between water and the soft material is important for self-assembly.

We numerically study thermodynamic and structural properties of the one-component Gaussian core model at very high densities. The solid-fluid phase boundary is carefully determined. We find that the density dependence of both the freezing and melting temperatures obey the asymptotic relation, log Tf, log Tm∝ − ρ2/3, where ρ is the number density, which is consistent with Stillinger's conjecture. Thermodynamic quantities such as the energy and pressure and the structural functions such as the static structure factor are also investigated in the fluid phase for a wide range of temperature above the phase boundary. We compare the numerical results with the prediction of the liquid theory with the random phase approximation (RPA). At high temperatures, the results are in almost perfect agreement with RPA for a wide range of density, as it has already been shown in the previous studies. In the low temperature regime close to the phase boundary line, although RPA fails to describe the structure factors and the radial distribution functions at the length scales of the interparticle distance, it successfully predicts their behaviors at longer length scales. RPA also predicts thermodynamic quantities such as the energy, pressure, and the temperature at which the thermal expansion coefficient becomes negative, almost perfectly. Striking ability of RPA to predict thermodynamic quantities even at high densities and low temperatures is understood in terms of the decoupling of the length scales which dictate thermodynamic quantities from the interparticle distance which dominates the peak structures of the static structure factor due to the softness of the Gaussian core potential.

A comprehensive microscopic dynamical theory is presented for the description of quantum fluids as they transform into glasses. The theory is based on a quantum extension of mode-coupling theory. Novel effects are predicted, such as reentrant behavior of dynamical relaxation times. These predictions are supported by path integral ring polymer molecular dynamics simulations. The simulations provide detailed insight into the factors that govern slow dynamics in glassy quantum fluids. Connection to other recent work on both quantum glasses as well as quantum optimization problems is presented.

Nitrogen and phosphorus are considered the most important limiting elements in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. however, very few studies have focused on which is from forested streams, a bridge between these two systems. To fill this gap, we examined the concentrations of dissolved N and P in storm waters from forested watersheds of five regions in Japan, to characterize nutrient limitation and its potential controlling factors. First, dissolved N and P concentrations and the N : P ratio on forested streams were higher during storm events relative to baseflow conditions. Second, significantly higher dissolved inorganic N concentrations were found in storm waters from evergreen coniferous forest streams than those from deciduous broadleaf forest streams in Aichi, Kochi, Mie, Nagano, and with the exception of Tokyo. Finally, almost all the N : P ratios in the storm water were generally higher than 34, implying that the storm water should be P-limited, especially for Tokyo.

By the m-spectrum of a real number q>1 we mean the set Ym(q) of values p(q) where p runs over the height m polynomials with integer coefficients. These sets have been extensively investigated during the last fifty years because of their intimate connections with infinite Bernoulli convolutions, spectral properties of substitutive point sets and expansions in noninteger bases. We prove that Ym(q) has an accumulation point if and only if q<m+1 and q is not a Pisot number. Consequently a number of related results on the distribution of points of this form are improved.

We call a positive semidefinite matrix whose elements are nonnegative a doubly nonnegative matrix, and the set of those matrices the doubly nonnegative cone (DNN cone). The DNN cone is not symmetric but can be represented as the projection of a symmetric cone embedded in a higher dimension. In Yoshise and Matsukawa (Proceedings of 2010 IEEE Multi-conference on Systems and Control, 2010), the authors demonstrated the efficiency of the DNN relaxation using the symmetric cone representation of the DNN cone. They showed that the DNN relaxation gives significantly tight bounds for a class of quadratic assignment problems, but the computational time is not affordable as long as we employ the symmetric cone representation. They then suggested a primal barrier function approach for solving the DNN optimization problem directly, instead of using the symmetric cone representation. However, most of existing studies on the primal barrier function approach have assumed the availability of a feasible interior point. This fact means that those studies are not inextricably tied to the practical usage. Motivated by these observations, we propose a primal barrier function Phase I algorithm for solving conic optimization problems over the closed convex cone K having the following properties: (a) its interior int K is not necessarily symmetric, (b) a self-concordant function f is defined over int K, and (c) its dual cone K* is not explicit or is intractable, all of which are observed when K is the DNN cone. We analyze the algorithm and provide a sufficient condition for finite termination.

Concerning the strategic manipulability of the stable matching produced by the Gale–Shapley algorithm, Kobayashi and Matsui recently considered the existence problem of a preference profile of women, that is, given a preference profile of men, find a preference profile of women that makes the Gale–Shapley algorithm produce the prescribed complete matching of men and women. Reformulating this problem by introducing the set of proposals to be made through the execution of the algorithm, and switching the roles of men and women, we consider the existence problem of a preference profile of men and show that the problem is reduced to a problem of checking if a directed graph is a rooted tree and it is solvable in polynomial time. We also show that the existence problem of preference profiles of both sexes when a set of proposals is given is solvable in polynomial time.

Energy metabolism is a very important process to improve and maintain health from the point of view of physiology. It is well known that the intracellular ATP production is contributed to energy metabolism in cells. Cistus monspeliensis is widely used as tea, spices, and medical herb; however, it has not been focusing on the activation of energy metabolism. In this study, C. monspeliensis was investigated as the food resources by activation of energy metabolism in human intestinal epithelial cells. C. monspeliensis extract showed high antioxidant ability. In addition, the promotion of metabolites of glycolysis and TCA cycle was induced by C. monspeliensis treatment. These results suggest that C. monspeliensis extract has an ability to enhance the energy metabolism in human intestinal cells.

BackgroundSafe and efficient gene transfer systems are needed for tissue engineering. We have developed an apatite composite layer including the bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) gene and fibronectin (FB), and we evaluated its ability to induce bone formation.MethodsAn apatite composite layer was evaluated to determine the efficiency of gene transfer to cells cultured on it. Cells were cultured on a composite layer including the BMP-2 gene and FB, and BMP-2 gene expression, BMP-2 protein concentrations, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and osteocalcin (OC) concentrations were measured. A bone defect on the cranium of rats was treated with hydroxyapatite (HAP)-coated ceramic buttons with the apatite composite layer including the BMP-2 gene and FB (HAP-BMP-FB). The tissue concentration of BMP-2, bone formation, and the expression levels of the BMP-2, ALP, and OC genes were all quantified.ResultsThe apatite composite layer provided more efficient gene transfer for the cultured cells than an apatite composite layer without FB. The BMP-2 concentration was approximately 100~600 pg/mL in the cell-culture medium. Culturing the cells on the apatite composite layer for 27 days increased ALP activity and OC concentrations. In animal experiments, the tissue concentrations of BMP-2 were over 100 pg/mg in the HAP-BMP-FB group and approximately 50 pg/mg in the control groups. Eight weeks later, bone formation was more enhanced in the HAP-BMP-FB group than in the control groups. In the tissues surrounding the HAP button, the gene expression levels of ALP and OC increased.ConclusionThe BMP-2 gene-FB-apatite composite layer might be useful for bone engineering.
