iPhoneとiPod touchをインターフェイスとする英語語彙学習用教材の開発を行った。iPhoneとiPod touchは発売以来急速に普及し,大学での英語学習への活用も始まっている。開発した語彙学習教材は,学校英語教科書で取り扱われることが少ないために,日本人英語学習者に不足している生活語彙を補強するための教材である。教材は1)コーパス言語学の手法を使って客観的に選定された生活語彙を学ぶことができる,2)教材に採用された指導法は指導実践を経て,指導効果が高いことが確認されている,3)初級学習者から上級学習者まで,また子どもから成人まで様々なレベルの学習者が活用できるという特徴を持つ。

The objective of this paper was to observe and examine the dynamic relationship between learners'"vocabulary size" and "communicative proficiency", as measured by the TOEIC test. First, we defined three levels of vocabulary size based on "The System 5,000 Word List", a word frequency list: 1,000 word list, 3,000 word list, and 5,000 word list. Then, the TOEIC tests were modified to make three tests comparable to the three defined levels of vocabulary size. Modifications to the TOEIC tests were made by deleting words from the tests that were not found on each level's defined list. The tests were administered to a group of native speakers of English. The vocabulary coverage coefficient of each participant was calculated and then compared with each participant's TOEIC score. There appears to be a relationship between the vocabulary coverage coefficient and the TOEIC scores in this study. This relationship may indicate that this coefficient may act as a predictor of TOEIC scores with a negligible margin of error. In other words, vocabulary size provides an objective measure of a learner's communicative proficiency, when all factors are held constant with the exception of vocabulary knowledge. It was also found that native speakers, who utilized top-down processing of information on the TOEIC tests, scored higher than 700 with the test of 1,000 words, and higher than 900 with the test of 3,000 words.

本研究は,いつでもどこでもだれでも,教育用例文コーパスを使って,DDL(Data-Driven Learning,データ駆動型学習)が実施可能なように,教育用コーパス・検索ツール・教材を搭載したDDLオープンプラットフォームを開発し,その活用と普及を図ることを目的とする。具体的には,平成25‐28年度科研において開発した第Ⅰ期開発版のデータ駆動型英語学習支援サイトSCoRE(Sentence Corpus of Remedial English)に基づき,1)教育用例文コーパスの増強,2)検索ツールの高度化・軽量化,3)DDL実践・効果検証・DDL普及活動の3項目の研究を行い,成果を逐次,国内外に発信することである。平成29年度の研究実績について述べる。1) 教育用例文パラレルコーパスの増強:第Ⅰ期開発版の英語例文・日本語訳データの見直しを行い,例文の増補・改訂,および,インターフェースの改良を加えた第4次開発版SCoREを公開した。2) 検索ツールの高度化・軽量化:SCoREツールのひとつ,「適語補充問題」ツールのログ機能を強化し,教育利用の促進を図った。さらに,ユーザの利便性を考慮し,新たに携帯端末用検索ツール「m-SCoRE」を開発・公開した。3) DDL教材の開発・実践・効果検証:上記1),2)の教育現場への応用研究として,外国語学習者がDDLに取り組むための教材や効果検証テストを開発し,データ駆動型英語学習支援サイトSCoRE(http://www.score-corpus.org/)に収録した。当該サイトは,オープンプラットフォームであり,教師・研究者が自由に収録データをダウンロードできる。大学生および高専生を対象としたDDL指導実践授業の評価と教育効果の検証を行った。研究成果として,雑誌論文を5件公刊し,6件の学会発表を行った。

日本人英語学習の弱点として,日常生活語彙の不足が指摘される。その対応として,小学校英語活動における日常生活語彙の指導に期待が寄せられている。本研究では,基礎研究として,小学生に学ばせたい日常生活語彙500語を客観的に選定し,それらに基づいて,英語カルタ教材を開発するものである。本教材は伝統的なカルタ教材の利点に加え,次のような特性を持つ。言語習得のプロセスにしたがってリスニングを重視し,無意識のうちに英語をたくさん「聞く」状況を作り出す,子どもたちの発達段階に合わせて学年を問わず繰り返し使える,他教科と連携させて使える,英語指導の経験のない学級担任が使える等の点である。本稿では,日常生活語彙の選定手順,カルタを利用した語彙指導の方法,具体的なカルタ教材作成の手法について述べる。English textbooks used in Japanese junior and senior high schools lack sufficient daily life vocabulary words such as microwave, vacuum cleaner, and faucet, etc. English teaching at Japanese elementary schools, which began in 2002, provides an opportunity to teach additional everyday vocabulary. In this study we adapted 'karuta', a traditional Japanese card game, to teach daily life vocabulary to Japanese elementary school students. Children can benefit from an enjoyable activity that provides an opportunity for exposure to English while lowering their affective filter. The target words for our daily life vocabulary karuta cards were systematically selected based on corpus linguistics techniques. The karuta cards created in this study are unique. The 'reading cards' (yomi-fuda) include information or hints about the target word such as its shape, color, size, usage, environment, habitat, etc. Students listen to these hints spoken one after another by an instructor and quickly choose the corresponding 'picture card' (e-fuda) from an array of cards in front of them. Due to the large number and extensive variety of hints listed on the reading cards, the card game can be used with students of different English levels and different cognitive abilities.

Junior and senior high school (JSH) English textbooks in Japan are written in accordance with the Course of Study guidelines provided by the Ministry of Education, Science. and Culture: these guidelines are revised about every ten years. In this study we examined the vocabulary of three sets of serial JSH textbooks, each of which was written in the 1980s, and then re-written in the 90s and again in the 2000s based on the revised Course of Study guidelines for each decade. The purpose of this study was to in vestigate both the alteration in vocabulary size and the efficacy of the three serial JSH textbook vocabularies. The study found that the number of types within JSH textbook vocabulary in the 2000s was larger than that of the 1980s and 90s. On the other hand, the amount of tokens in the 2000 set was the lowest of the three serials. This means that the number of repetitions of exposure to words used in the 2000s version textbook was the lowest of the three. The study also found that the efficacy of the JSH textbook vocabulary gradually improved each time A Gourse of Study was revised, although the overall JSH text coverage over the vocabulary of practical activities remained insufficient.

日英パラレルコーパスを利用した英語指導法と教材開発を行い, 指導実践によってそれらの学習効果を検証した。さらに, コーパス検索サイトの開発を推進した。主な研究成果を国際学会(AsiaTEFL国際会議, 台湾教育学会, TaLC, World CALL)および国内学会(JACET, 英語コーパス学会)において報告し, 開発した指導法等の詳細を公刊した。本課題に関する論文を掲載した著書がRodopi(アムステルダム)と松柏社(東京)より出版された。研究代表者は本課題に関連して2008年度英語コーパス学会賞を受賞した。

グローバル化の進展に伴い,世界の外国語教育は多様化の方向に進んでいる。本研究では多言語教育のための語彙学習教材の開発を行った。研究成果として,1)ペーパー版の英語語彙学習教材を開発し,試用効果を小・中学校で検証した,2)英語教材をもとに中国語,韓国語,日本語学習のためのペーパー版語彙学習教材を作成した,3)ペーパー版教材の成果を踏まえ,iOSを使ってモバイル英語語彙学習教材を開発し,Apple Storeにて公開した。
