In this essay, I would like to show a demarcation between science and pseudo-science, from two approaches: theoretical and experimental/observational. Theoretical approach pays attention to revision pattern in theoretical explanation. Especially, when the elucidator introduces new unknown elements for explanation, pseudo-scientific explanation fails to satisfy some conditions. On the other hand, experimental/observational criterion says, pseudo-science claims doubtful phenomenological laws.

The asymmetry of causation and backward causation are discussed. The problems are whether asymmetry of causation is objective or subjective, and what backward causation is. First, I survey and criticize three theories about causation: Dowe's fork theory, Menzies and Price's agency theory and Woodward's manipulability theory. Next, I insist that we should distinguish between causal process and causal direction, and that the former objectively exists but the latter does not. Third, I clarify what backward causation is if the causal direction does not objectively exist. I focus on the relative direction of temporal axis in causal process. Forth and finally, I would like to apply my theory to the problem of non-locality in quantum mechanics.

The main purpose of this essay is an analysis of the methodology in physical research using the semantic concept of scientific theories (SC). The structure of this paper is as follows. First, the antecedent analyses of scientific research by T. S. Kuhn, I. Lakatos and L. Laudan are surveyed. Secondly, I try to define what SC is. According to SC, theory is applied not to real world directly but to model. And next, the methodology of physical research is analyzed by using SC according to the following three steps: 1. improving the approximation between model and the real world, 2. introducing unknown objects (or interactions), 3. alternating basic theory. Finally, the development of physics is discussed. I insist that a criterion to judge which theory is better when theory is modified is the ability to solve empirical problems not conceptual.

This paper provides a new criterion to distinguish the genuine science from the pseudoscience. Morita (2008; 2009) discussed that there are two demarcation criteria between science and pseudo-science: experimental and theoretical. In this essay, I focus on the theoretical criterion. This criterion is an application of a new view of scientific explanation shown in Morita (2007; 2008 ch. 1). The point is that scientific explanation must unify the phenomena in question into common framework, and new elements which is added to model in order to deduce explicandum must be observable or be able to promote unification.

In 1930, Einstein proposed the Gedankenexperiment that seems to show the invalidity of the time-energy uncertainty relation. Bohr gave an answer to this Einstein's challenge by resorting to the Einstein's general theory of relativity. However, many scientists and philosophers have critiqued his answer, and proposed new ones. The important proposals in these are ones given by Treder and Busch. In this paper, I survey and critique these answers. The point is how to interpret the time-energy uncertainty relation appeared in the Einstein's Photon Box. Next, I suggest a new answer to the Photon Box Gedankenexperment. My suggestion is that measurement of energy of phton is done by measuring the mass of box before and after the emission of photon.

There are three received approaches to scientific explanation: causal, unification and pragmatics. However, I will try to highlight the insufficiency of these approaches in this paper, furthermore instead, suggest a new approach: explanation by showing the essence of the phenomena. 'The essence of the phenomena' is what distinguishes the class of phenomena in question from the other classes of phenomena. Therefore, unification surely plays an important role in the scientific explanation, but its role is to clarify the essence of the phenomena.
