The purpose of this study is to clarify the concepts of the browsing area at public libraries and to explain the reason why the newspapers and magazines area has been used as the browsing area in Japan. The results are as follows; In the United States, it was important in 1960's how "the informal reading areas" should be arranged at public libraries, but they were combined into the one called either "the browsing area" or "the popular reading area", because the function of each was not defined clearly. Recently this informal reading area, now called the popular reading area, with a collection chiefly of fictions and furnished with easy chairs, has been planned for people unfamiliar with public libraries. In Japan, public libraries of 1960's, when they were based on the closed stack system, turned the newspapers and magazines area into the informal reading area furnished with easy chairs, which was called "the browsing area". Even when public libraries turned into the ones on the open shelf system, this area has been still called the browsing area.

In Japanese nursery school, there is no standard of group formation of one-year-old children's class which can be seen in many foreign countries. In the existing circumstances, many classes respectively have large group formation, that is, each class consists of children whose range of growth is wide. In this study, in relation to the group formation of classes which is most important when a nursery room is planned, they is divided into the three conditions, that is, the group formation of the minimum age of 1 year and 6 months - the maximum age of 2 years and 7 months, that of the min. 1 year and 2 months - the max. 2 years, and that of the min. 1 year and 1 month-the max. 2 years and 7 months, and in each condition the experimental care is taken. After this, the influence on the one-year-old children and the nurse staffs is investigated and the suitable group formation is considered. As the result, this point is confirmed. In group formation of one-year-old children, conversions of nursery activities and nurse staffs' fatigue are relatively lightened in the nursery room planned so that each class may consist of children whose range of growth is narrow.

The Essex Design Guide is one of the best design guides in the UK. In 1973, the first edition of the guide was published. In 1997, the new edition was published. There are differences between the old guide and the new guide. The aim of this study is to clarify the reason why the differences occurred with analyzing the respective backgrounds. The old guide originated from a scheme for conservation areas defined by the Civic Amenities Act of 1967, and was influenced by the townscape theory. On the contrary, the new guide uses some new concepts of mixed uses, sustainability, permeability, legibility and so on, which were incubated under the aesthetic battle of architecture from the late of 1980's.

個室化は近代住居においてさけられない現象であるが,問題は,個室とその対置的関係にある居間との適切な使い分けの行動様式を住生活において確立することにあると考えられる。そこで,本研究は,わが国における「居間」の空間概念を歴史的に考察するとともに,現在の「居間」がだんらんの空間としてどのように機能しているか,また,家族成員のそれぞれに「居間」がどのような性格を持つ空間として意識されているのか,さらに,「居間」での行為に住み手の家族関係,特に,親‐子関係がどのように反映されているかを明らかにして,今後の「居間」の在り方と問題点を住文化論的に考察したものである。「居間」の呼称の史的分析,46世帯を対象とした立体的住生活詳細調査(内8世帯でビデオ撮影)の結果,以下のことを明らかにした。①「居間」の空間慨念を,明治以降現在まで出版された国語辞典を手掛かりにして分析した結果,主体系=夫・妻の居室としての居間,総括行為系=家族のだんらんの空間としての「居間」に分かれること。次に,住宅関係の書籍にて,こうした居間の空間概念の変化を歴史的に分析した結果,夫人の居室としての居間がだんらんの空間としての「居間」に変化したこと。②現在の「居間」における住生活時間量と住生活行為種の持ち込みを分析した結果,親の比重が大きいこと。こうした傾向は主寝室の空間的な確立条件とは関係なく,「居間」が特に父親の居場所として機能していること。つまり,「居間」が家族のだんらんの空間として機能しながらも,空間概念的には親の主体系の性格を強く残していること。③この結果,子どもの住生活の中心が子ども部屋につくられることになり,この傾向が顕著になると家族コミユニティー上問題をつくること。「居間が総括行為系として機能するには主寝室を親の主体系の空間として機能させるような行動様式を確立するとともに,家族の人間関係における子ども中心主義の成立が求められること。

In this study we analyzed characteristics of activities of junior-high-school teachers, and got some insights of the teachers-room. Teachers' time is severely restricted. Particularly, in the 10-minute-free-time they must manage many tasks, as the school building plan intends. When teachers' working space is under much attention of students, individual guidance and grading is difficult. When the teachers' rooms are separated, teachers need much time to move, so it is difficult to rest and work in the 10-minute-free-time. Also, they have less communication, and have more trouble under sudden accidents on students.

The purpose of the study is to examine the characteristics of the local standards established by the Land Readjustment Associations in Fukuoka Prefecture, and to clarify the actual planning procedure of land replotting in the projects under the City Planning Act of 1919. The method of study is to compare the local standards with the national one, and to examine the sizes of blocks and lots, and the plotting plan. As a result, we found that the city planning section of Fukuoka Prefecture had established the unique local standards of blocks. While the standard blocks were realized in executed plans, standard lots were not, because of the actual replotting restriction from original land ownership.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the configuration of open space in Japanese urban area by applying the space syntax theory, and to investigate the relationship between the structure of urban form and social conditions. 1) Configurations of open space can be quantitatively characterized by the space syntax theory. 2) Integration value correlates closely with pedestrians distribution. 3) Distribution of the building-use does not correlate to the integration value but it is a correlate of the pedestrian distribution. 4) The space syntax theory can estimate pedestrian flows and the building-use of future plans. It is concluded that analysis based on the space syntax theory is useful to support urban planning, because the theory can be applied to recognize the present situation and to evaluate the alternatives comparatively.

In this study we analyzed alteration of teachers-space of junior-high-school, where they have changed from departmentalized classroom system to special classroom system, and got some insights of the teachers' room. Since it is essential for teachers of the same school year to have much communication and cooperation for student guidance, teachers' working space should not be separated. The teachers' room must be arranged to enable them to discuss or to hold meetings freely, regardless of the school scale or the school management method. Besides, if all members are sets, it is best from overall viewpoint of the school management.
