Prospective memory requires forming an intention that cannot be completed at the present time, remembering that intention, and then recognizing the appropriate time to execute it. We review recent work in our laboratory that has revealed prospective memory-like patterns of performance in nonhuman primates. Rhesus monkeys and capuchin monkeys were given computerized tasks in which the monkeys either had to remember a future response they could not make immediately, or they sometimes saw a particular stimulus during an ongoing task they had to remember to later indicate seeing or not seeing. Most monkeys succeeded on these tasks and even anticipated the necessary responses. Chimpanzees also showed evidence of prospective memory. They appeared to form intentions about less valuable food items that they did not want immediately but would want later, and they responded at a later time when it was possible to obtain those items. Even when the response option was embedded within an ongoing task, the chimpanzees still showed some success in remembering to carry out the prospective intention. This research indicates that nonhuman primates form intentions for future responses, maintain those intentions during a delay, and execute them at an appropriate time.

渡り鳥は,渡りのストレスで血液内寄生虫に感染しやすくなったり,越冬地でも感染する可能性があるため,留鳥よりも感染率が高いと考えられる,利根川および霞ケ浦湖岸のヨシ原において捕獲されたホオジロ,ホオアカ,カシラダカ,アオジ,シベリアジュリン,オオジュリンの6種類のホオジロ(<i>Emberiza</i>)属から血液を採取し, <i>Haemoproteus</i> spp, <i>Trypanosoma</i> spp, <i>Splendidofilaria</i> spp, <i>Plasmodium</i> spp,<i>Leucocytozoon</i> spp の5種類の血液内寄生虫(原虫)の感染率を調べた.血液を採取した352個体中,血液内寄生虫が感染していたのは,カシラダカ,アオジ,オオジュリンの各1個体であり,全体の0.8%にすぎなかった.カシラダカとオオジュリンでは配偶子母細胞や分裂前体をもった成熟した原虫が見つからなかったので種名まで同定できなかったが,アオジに感染していたのは <i>H.coatneyi</i> であった,<i>Emberiza</i> 属においては,渡りをする種が留鳥性の種より血液内寄生虫の感染率が高いという予測は支持されなかった.本研究と前報(Sodhi <i>et al</i>.1996)によって,日本に生息しているホオジロ属では血液内寄生虫の感染率が低く抑えられていることがわかった.ホオジロ属の血液内寄生虫感染率がどのようなメカニズムで低く抑えられているかはわからない.

Sensitization by bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd) and hyperthermia (HT) on cell reproductive death induced by ionizing radiation was analyzed using the linear-quadratic [S(D)/S(0)=exp{-( αD+ βD^2 )}] model. Plateau-phase human lung tumor cells (SW-1573) and human colorectal carcinonoma cells (RKO) were treated with BrdUrd, radiation and HT. LQ-analysis was performed at iso-incubation dose and at iso-incorporation level of BrdUrd, and at iso-HT doses and iso-survival levels after HT. Clonogenic assays were performed 24 h after treatment to allow repair of potentially lethal damage (PLD). In SW cells BrdUrd, HT or the combination significantly increased the α-parameter (factor 2.0- 5.7), without altering the β-parameter. In RKO cells sensitization with BrdUrd increased both α (factor 1.4) and β(factor 1.3) while HT only influenced β (factor 2.1-4.0). The combination did not further increase the α and β The results indicate that BrdUrd has its main effect on the parameter α, dominant at clinically relevant radiation doses but that HT can affect both α and β The addition of BrdUrd and HT provides a method to enhance the efficacy of radiotherapy.

A rumen protozoon, Entodinium caudatum, and mixed rumen protozoa were isolated from a monofaunated and a naturally faunated goats with rumen fistula, respectively. Diaminopimelate decarboxylase activities of the crude enzymes of the protozoa were assayed by determining the lysine production with a high-performance liquid chromatography. The optimal pH and temperature for the catalytic activities of the crude enzymes were found to be 6.3 and 50°C, respectively, in both E. caudatum and mixed rumen protozoa, while the Km values for 2, 6-diaminopimelate in both protozoal crude enzymes were 0.62 and 0.68mM, respectively. For the stability of the enzyme of E. caudatum, the presence of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate and thiol group such as 2-mercaptoethanol and dithiothreitol was necessary and higher catalytic activities were retained in the pH range of 5.0 and 6.8. The enzyme was stable when kept in the temperature range of 25 and 60°C for 10min, but the activity was completely lost at 70°C. DL-penicillamine inhibited the enzyme at a concentration of 1.6mM, but its effect was lessened by increasing the concentration of pyridoxal-5'-phosphate.
