In this study, for the pottery of the Igusa and Natsushima types unearthed from four remains in Tochigi Prefecture, petrographic analysis of the paste was conducted on its thin sections. In comparison with river sand in the Kanto region, the presumed fields of raw materials of the pottery were identified, and the manufacturing and transfer of pottery at that time were studied in comparison with the conventional analysis examples for the pottery of the beginning of the Jomon period. As a result, it was found that the pottery of the Igusa type from the Utsunomiya Seiryo High School site and the Yamazaki-kita site in Utsunomiya city includes the pottery having the mineralogical composition of mainly altered volcanic rocks, with andesite, decite and rhyolit. The composition is similar to that of the river sand in the central area of Tochigi Prefecture, and therefore, it was presumed that the pottery was made using the local materials. All the samples from the Ichinozuka site in Moka city and some of the Igusa type from the Yamazaki-kita site are composed of pottery having the rock mineralogical composition of mainly granite. Therefore, it was presumed that the material fields were located in the granite distribution regions, and there is a possibility that the pottery or materials were carried into the sites. The most possible granite fields are the Tsukuba pluton and its surroundings. For the Yamazaki-kita site, small plutons in the Ashio Mountains are also other possible fields. The pottery of the Natsushima type from the Mamada Roppongi site in Oyama city contains many altered volcanic rocks with granite and siliceous rocks, and it is presumed that the material field is the central area of Tochigi Prefecture. Pottery using the local materials was found at the Utsunomiya Seiryo High School site, the Yamazaki-kita site and the Mamada Roppongi site, but not at the Ichinozuka site. Since the paste of the Igusa and Natsushima types which contain mainly granite is found in Chiba Prefecture as well, there is a possibility that it was transferred over a wide area. The composition of the paste in each site has no variety, and there is less paste that is presumed to originate in remote fields. As a result, it is presumed that the frequency of transfer of pottery made of other paste is low and the transfer distance is small.

This paper is a methodological study on "regional variation and regionality of folk customs", in which the author aims to construct a new interpretative model from the viewpoint of the structure of the acceptance of culture. To present this subject, the author considered it necessary to put in order the several lines of research (anthropological regionality, geographical regionality, and historical regionality), state clearly that this confusion in the concept of "regionality" has hindered research, and to start with the study of "regional variation", which has no margin for confused interpretation. Concerning the proposition as to what regional variation is, and what causes regional variation, the author makes it clear that functional research has developed since the 1970s (individual analysis method and regional ethnology), as a reaction to and total denial of Yanagita Kunio's ethnology which insists that "regional variation shows a difference in era", but that this does not correspond to a total denial; and he presents the theory of a structure for the acceptance of culture as a new interpretative model, incorporating the results of the theory of dissemination of the Yanagita school of ethnology. In this process, in order to rearrange the dissemination theory as the regionality theory, the author re-examines various discussions on historical-geographical ethnology and the cultural area theory of the past, and refers to the trends and methods in research (Methods for handling materials) in linguistic geography, cultural geography, etc.. As a result, he has necessarily come to support the tendency towards the theory of multi-system evolution (special evolution), which means the adaption to the natural, social and cultural environments. In other words, the introduction of a culture should be recognized as a process of reception, adaption, transformation, conversion, and total reunification of the regional society, and the structural model for the acceptance of culture as the theory of regionality, should analyze the structure of the process and its function. Furthermore, through the use of the operating concept of the levels of socio-cultural integration, the model also becomes a kind of interpretative model of cultural changes, including within its field of vision the process of modernization and urbanization.

With regard to letters written by soldiers, until recently the emphasis was on listening to the voice of the soldier, or author of the letter, and little attention was paid to the voices of those receiving the letter. This paper attempts to show, from the point of view of folklore research, how the families of soldiers understood and accepted the mass abnormal deaths of the soldiers dying in battle or from disease contacted at the front, as the war situation expanded from the Chinese-Japanese War to the Asia-Pacific War. To this end, the paper looks at the letters of two farmer-soldiers from Waga Town in Waga County, Iwate Prefecture (present-day Kitakami City), classifying and analyzing from the three separate aspects of documentation: records (letters) , memories and oral accounts (interviews) , objects (mortuaries and gravestones and other objects representing the dead). As a result, four issues are discussed. First, one notable feature of the letters sent by the two farmer-soldiers to their families was the fact that they did not discuss the actual situation at the battle front but rather kept referring to the soldiers' homes, revealing how, even though the soldiers' physical bodies were at the battle front, their minds were with their families at home. The act of sending letters was, for the soldiers, a way of signaling that they were still alive, just as the act of receiving the letters conveyed this information to the families. Second, such deaths from fighting and from disease contacted at the front were, for the traditional Japanese farming society, a first-time experience. Although death announcements were published in the bulletins and although village and family funerals hastily carried out, the families could not immediately accept the fact that their loved ones were dead and wives felt compelled to make investigations on their own to confirm their husbands' death. Third, special attention was given to the motivation behind the construction of graves for soldiers killed in battle or by disease at the front. Analysis indicates that building a grave was one way of accepting a husband's death, and that the grave served as the mechanism for severing and joining together the living and the dead. The fourth issue concerns the importance of objects representing the dead and of memorial services such as "kuyo," "irei," and "tsuito." The traditional ceremony to mourn the dead is "kuyo" in the case of a normal death and "irei" in the case of an abnormal death. When mourning for a dead person without bringing religious aspects into the picture, "tsuito" would be the appropriate the ceremony. Naturally, these three types of ceremonies have different meanings and functions and each follows its own vector in its placement of the deceased: the "kuyo" lead the deceased to attain of Buddhahood (enter Nirvana) , the "irei" leads to deification of the deceased, and the "tsuito" demonstrates that the deceased retains his dignity in death. It is characteristic of objects representing those killed in battle and dead from diseases contracted at the front as well as the appropriate ceremonies to be multi-layered both in terms of space and religion.

The study of the spatial composition of a village and the life centered around it, is a primary concern. This paper examines some villages located at Kurahashi (Unagami, Chiba Pref.), which was selected for field work. An analysis of the spatial composition is attempted through examining eight items: (1) the boundaries of the village (murazakai) (2) residential areas (3) land for cultivation (4) non-cultivated land (5) ritual areas (6) social areas (7) place names (8) directions. The result is as follows:(1) In the center of the village, Suijinsha (literally “water god shrine” ) as ubusunajinja (shrine of the local guardian diety) and Hōjuin as tetsugidera are surrounded by a circular road. From the circular road, radial roads run in four directions. The residential area of the village is limited to the inside of the circular road and the circumference.(2) Outside the residential area lies land for cultivation. The plateau is used for fields and there are rice fields in the terraced ground along the valley; the slopes between the rice fields and fields as well as the land around the cultivated land is not cultivated.(3) One of the ideological boundaries that crosses the radial roads, corresponds to the physical boundary between the residential area and the land for cultivation. Another boundary is located where dorokujin ( “guardian of the village boundary” , “road safety god” ) and tsuka are placed at the entrance of a road running from the highway that runs in the north to the residential area. Thus, there are two ideological boundaries in the north and this has a relation to the geographical boundaries that are also dual. Possible reasons for these dual boundaries set in the north are the presence of the cultivated area stretching in the north, the fact that development is limited and the necessity for a protective boundary due to the heavy traffic along the highway.(4) Kurahashi consists of five seko that were muragumi (small regional groups) but initially it consisted of two muragumi that were divided by a river. Moreover, as the entrance and exit of the village correspond to the two dōrokujin located on the radial roads running from South to West, and from North and East, a close relation can be found between the number of muragumi and entrances to the village.(5) The words South and North have a social connotation; South is superior to North and this is reflected in the two groups (muragumi) North and South We can find a belief concerning the sun that underlies the superiority of South.

Thus far, plant use during the Incipient Jomon period has been discussed in relation to the beginning of pottery use. This is because initial pottery-making is thought to have enabled the use of a number of vegetable foods found in cool to temperate, deciduous broadleaf forests, such as nuts and acorns that require boiling to remove toxins before consumption. However, clarifying "what kind of foods were actually processed or cooked in Incipient Jomon potteries" is one of the most important research topics. In 2012, charred acorns (Quercus subgen. Lepidobalanus) and bulbs of wild onion (Allium sp.) from the Incipient Jomon period were excavated from the Ojiyama Site, and directly dated to 13,400 cal BP. These discoveries indicate that people in the southern part of Kyushu Island already utilized these types of plant foods. In addition, in order to examine actual usage of the Ryutaimon pottery and to estimate its relationship with plant foods, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values and C/N ratios of these plant remains and charred materials attached to the inside of Ryutaimon pottery from the Ojiyama Site (southern Kyushu Island) and Sankakuyama Site (Tanega-shima Island) were analyzed.Stable isotope values seem to show that Ryutaimon pottery from the Ojiyama Sites was used not only for boiling plants (especially acorns), but also for boiling remains of terrestrial mammals. The charred materials on potteries might be residue of a mixed "stew" of plant and animal foods. In the case of the Sankakuyama Site, stable isotope values were related more closely to marine products. It is likely that Ryutaimon pottery on southern Kyushu Island was used as a cooking tool for boiling a wide variety of foodstuffs.

According to Yayoi settlement theory, Yayoi pottery belonging to the same pottery type excavated directly from the floor of a pit dwelling is thought to have existed simultaneously with the pit dwelling. Each Yayoi pottery type lasted for about 30 to 50 years, and it was firmly believed that they lasted for the same length of time as a single generation.Since according to Jomon settlement theory the broad types of Jomon pottery lasted for around 100 years, from the 1970s there has been much debate surrounding methods of identifying relics that co-existed at the same time. Research has progressed to the extent that today coexistence is identified within a single 20-year phase based on calibrated dates by Ken'ichi Kobayashi. However, if we use calibrated dates we find that there were pottery types like Itazuke IIa and Itazuke IIb that continued for more than a 100 years. Consequently, today, some 40 years behind Jomon settlement theory, Yayoi settlement theory has reached the stage of having to debate the identification of simultaneously co-existing pit dwelling. The results of this study show that it is just possible to identify pit dwelling that co-existed simultaneously at the end of Early Yayoi and the beginning of Middle Yayoi when pottery types lasted for a short time. But even for Itazuke IIa and Itazuke IIb types, for which it is currently difficult to identify simultaneously coexisting pit dwelling due to their long duration, assuming that the number of cumulative dwellings that existed represented each pottery type, the author found that it is possible to make a comparative evaluation of the features of each stage by comparing the number of cumulative pit dwelling to the cumulative number for the Itazuke IIc type stage, which lasted for a short time.Settlement theory that takes into account the duration of each pottery type necessitates a review of the premise of the theory of group structure that considers that five simultaneously coexisting pit dwelling form a single unit. Nonetheless, it brings to the fore the temporal aspect of Yayoi research, for which clues have remained elusive until now, and opens the door to new possibilities for research topics, such as variable rates of population increase.

Dosojin (a wayside Deity) are considered gods of the border. However, this viewpoint alone has not been enough to sufficiently explain the diverse customs that have been handed down in folklore regarding dosojin. In particular, previous studies had barely included within their scope dosojin-worship in the cities. However, documents point precisely to dosojin-worship in the cities. Before mediaeval times, the capital of Kyoto was the center of activities, but, in the Edo period, there were also a great number of dosojin festivals. In the "Shokoku Fuzoku Toijokotae (Answers to questions regarding customs of the regions)", which records folklore from the early nineteenth century, the dosojin festivals of Akita and Nagaoka clearly reveal how dosojin festivals were conducted, based on the space and hierarchy of the castle towns. This holds true for the cities of Matsumoto and Matsushiro in Shinshu and it can be concluded that the worship of dosojin was closely related to the lives of the people. The function of the dosojin in this respect was not necessarily just closing the border and keeping outsiders form entering. The dosojin also had the function of opening the boundary and was the object of prayers for household prosperity and secure life. The dosojin came to take on these functions after these border deities came to be given the shape of a double deity with both a male and female body. In the mythology found in the Kojiki and the Nihonshoki, the border deities did not necessarily have any gender and were single-bodied. As these deities acquired sexual characteristics, they came to be regarded as not closing the border but opening it.A deity originally called "Saeno kami" came to be given the characters for "doso" and later for "dosojin," which led to the pronunciation "do-so-jin". It can be said that, as a result, these deities no longer needed to be restricted to the border and could take on various functions. Even today, dosojin-worship in the cities is repeatedly regenerated.

The lacquer tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum (Anacaradiaceae) is an endemic tree in East Asia and is called urushi in Japanese. The urushi lacquer is collected from the tree trunk of this species and has been utilized as an adhesive and/or a painting material from very ancient ages. Many kinds of lacquer ware have been recovered from Neolithic archeological sites in Japan and China, and the urushi lacquer ware especially characterizes the Jomon culture in Japan. To elucidate the origin of the Japanese urushi culture, we examined the distribution of urushi trees in East Asia, analyzed their chloroplast DNA, and re-examined the fossil record of the urushi plant.Although the urushi plant is now distributed in China, Korea, and Japan, all of the trees in Korea and Japan are not native, but are cultivated. Thus the urushi trees in Japan is considered as an introduction from somewhere in China. We detected three haplotypes in the chloroplast DNA (trnL intron and trnL-F intergenic spacer regions) in of the urushi plant. The first one haplotype (haplotype V) is widely distributed in central China between Hwang Ho and Yangtze Jiang of China. The second haplotype (haplotype VI) is found in Japan, Korea, and Liaoning and Shandong provinces of China. The last one haplotype (haplotype VII) is found only in Shandong and Zhejiang provinces of China. The presence of wild urushi plant with the haplotype VI in certain areas of China may suggest the possibility that the urushi trees in Japan seem to have originated and introduced from those areas, if it was introduced. Fossil records of pollen, fruits, and wood of the urushi plant have been recovered from the early Jomon period in Japan, especially in eastern and northeastern Japan. One exception is the oldest record of the incipient Jomon period of ca. 12600 cal BP of a urushi fossil wood from the Torihama shell midden of Fukui prefecture. This fact is pressing us to re-consider whether what the urushi plant was brought over from China, or it is native to Japan originally.
