The present study examined the relationship between reading comprehension and two processes of the inhibitory mechanism. Forty-six participants performed reading comprehension test and three conditions of the reading span test (RST): distractor, interference, and control conditions. In the RST, participants were instructed to read sentences aloud while holding target words in each sentence. The distractor and interference conditions required the ability to inhibit distractor information in the context, and to suppress no-longer-relevant information within working memory, respectively. The results showed that performance was lower in the distractor and interference conditions than in the control condition, and that reading comprehension score was significantly correlated only with performance in the interference condition, with neither the distractor nor control condition. We conclude that the suppression of no-longer-relevant information contributes to the correlation between the RST and reading comprehension, while two inhibitory abilities play an important role in the RST performance.

Temporal synchrony is a critical condition for integrating information coming from different sensory modalities such as vision, audition and touch. However, how we take correspondence between the signals coming from different sensory modalities is still unclear. This paper first summarizes a series of psychophysical experiments on audio-visual temporal synchrony perception, conducted by us over the past several years (Fujisaki, Koene, Arnold, Johnston, & Nishida, 2006; Fujisaki & Nishida, 2005, 2007, 2008; Fujisaki, Shimojo, Kashino, & Nishida, 2004), and introduces our proposed model for audio-visual synchrony detection (Fujisaki & Nishida, 2005). The latter part of the paper introduces some of our more recent works on crossmodal temporal synchrony perception including tactile modality, which compare temporal frequency limits obtained with synchrony-asynchrony discrimination experiments between audio-tactile, visuo-tactile, and audio-visual stimulus pairs.

Our research goal is to discover principles underlying natural communication among individuals. For this purpose we explore human likeness of androids and naturalness of human-android communication through the development of the androids. In this paper, we focus on the android's face and discuss on the human likeness of a face from the viewpoint of the android development. The paper presents essential points to make the android's face humanlike. Moreover, the paper describes a psychological experiment to evaluate the likability of the android's movements, including facial movements (e.g., blinking and eye movement).

How should we approach to the origins of morality? How should we analyse the moral emotions? Recent researches in animal psychology seem to throw some light on these questions. According to Brosnan & de Waal, the brown capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) has a 'sense of fairness.' As Darwin thought, morality is supported by social emotions, which not only humans but also other primates should have. Then, in order to answer the preceding questions, we have to pay enough attention to the emotional responses of nonhuman primates in social contexts as well as those of humans. In addition, we should not neglect the conceptual analysis of morality and moral emotions, because morality consists of various components. In this regard, J.S. Mill's analysis of 'justice' in Utilitarianism may be regarded as a good example. We will state a brief prospect of the "evolutionary ethics."
