Intravital lipid peroxidation is associated with the onset of diseases including atherosclerosis and cancer. Antioxidants such as polyphenols and peptides have been reported to prevent peroxidation. Our laboratory previously found that soybean tempeh, a traditional fermented soy food from Indonesia, possesses stronger antioxidant activity than unfermented soybeans. The aim of the present study is to establish whether chickpea tempeh also demonstrates elevated antioxidant properties compared with unfermented chickpeas using DPPH radical scavenging activity and β-carotene bleaching assays. Our results showed that total polyphenol content in chickpeas increased by up to 40% during fermentation. In addition, the DPPH assay revealed that the antioxidant activity of the chickpeas tempeh was stronger than that of unfermented chickpeas.

What relationship is there between social welfare and the religion? How has religious social welfare been understood? Where is religious social welfare placed in the context of modern Japanese social welfare handled by administrative systems, governed by the law, and supported by fiscal resources from the state? With these questions in mind, the author explores how social welfare has been practiced in the world under the three major religions. The author argues that social welfare originates from various religious traditions and that religion has been essential in motivating practitioners of social welfare. The author also points out that in Japan, the value of religion for social welfare is apt to be underestimated.

In the field of Japanese art education, the pigments employed in traditional Japanese paintings are rarely used, though using them in an educational context could be very valuable in imparting an understanding of Bijutsu Bunka(art culture)currently required in curriculum guidelines. In an attempt to explore how they can be adopted in today's art education, this paper explores two Japanese traditional painting technique books from the Taisho Period and highlights the common characteristics of the pigments described in the books and compares them with pigments that have survived from those times, or have been more recently developed for use in traditional-style paintings. The origins of various Japanese pigments are organized in such a way that they can be used as educational material. In order to provide background for this research, the first chapter considers how Japanese traditional paintings are created, displayed and enjoyed today. Also the significance of Bijutsu Bunka, which was newly specified in curriculum guidelines, is discussed. The second chapter, focusing on the refinement and elutriation of pigments used in Japanese traditional paintings, categorizes and organizes the features of the pigments used. The third chapter refers to the above two books and considers the changes made since then in the types of the pigment. The final chapter summarizes the characteristics of the pigments and gives a general view of how they were traditionally used and concludes that the pigments, many of which have been refined by elutriation, can be utilized effectively in the field of art education today. The author believes that intercourse between the past and present, and understanding and appreciating traditional art, offer new possibilities in the future of art education.

The purpose of this study is to understand the reality of how teachers support truant students and how effective they believe the measures they take to be. In a questionnaire survey of 227 teachers, we asked them to recollect their successful and unsuccessful support cases and assess each intervention by answering multiple-choice questions designed to find out which of 32 support methods they had used, and how effective they thought the methods they used were. As a result, it was found that there was no correlation between the rates at which a method was chosen and its success or failure. All the methods used in successful cases rated higher and in some cases the differences were statistically significant. Also, methods used in unsuccessful cases were rated lower in junior high school case assessments compared to that of elementary schools, suggesting that junior high school teachers are having a tougher time in supporting truant junior high school students.

The author has two purposes in mind when he writes this paper. One is to clearly show the importance of capturing communication as social intercourse, which signifies a dialogue not within but between the communities, denying the idea of traditional view of communication as authentic "speaker-hearer" model. The other is to explicitly insist J.-P.Sartre's others are the same as what the author talks about in this paper. The others have asymmetric relation to me, do not share the communal code, and have the right to determine the meaning of what the speaker says.

In this research, we examined whether the prediction of future events by the person with a high depression tendency was more accurate than that of the person with a low depression tendency. Participants were 137 female college students. Question paper investigations were executed twice. The interval between investigations was a month. In the 1st investigation, both Depression-Happiness Scale and Scale of Life Events in Interpersonal and Achievement Domains questionnaires were used. In the 2nd, only Scale of Life Events in Interpersonal and Achievement Domains questionnaire was used. In this research, it was not possible to conclude which prediction, the high or the low, depression group, was accurate. The accuracies of the predictions were at the same level between the high and the low depression group. It suggests that accuracy of predictions may vary with the differences of prediction and an actual experience.
