“The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art” was the oldest book of mathematics in China before the unearthing of “Suan-shu shu.” The aim of our research is to provide a complete translation and annotation of it including annotations of Liu Hui(劉徽)and Li Chunfeng(李淳風)from the viewpoint of our previous work on “Suan-shu shu.” This is the twenty-fifth article based on our research and results in which we studied the problems 1 to 3 of Chapter 8, Fangcheng(方程).

This paper discusses from the viewpoint of literacy how immigrant women in Japan through international marriages live in an area, where Japanese language classes are unavailable, and what strategies they use and how they maintain their independence to compensate for this disadvantage. Ethnographical data gathered through life history interviews of immigrant women, interviews conducted among the residents in their area, and participant observation, are used in the present analysis. This research clarifies that social participation of these women is limited and partial, although they survive in the society by complementing their lack of literacy with their human resources, such as family members and friends. In order for them to realize fully their potential through social and community participation, there is need for stronger public support systems and provisions in the community for their empowerment. 韓国では近年,移民受入れが進み,それに伴って移民政策も急速に整備されてきている。本稿は2009年10-11月に科学研究費補助金により,日本語教育保障法研究会で実施した韓国における移民関連施策および移民支援の状況に関する現地実態調査の報告(1)である。本稿は,研究全体の概要および韓国調査の位置付け(第1章),韓国調査の概要(第2章),政府関係機関である「韓国女性政策研究院」1)(第3章)と「保健福祉家族部多文化家族課」(第4章)の訪問調査報告によって構成される。調査によって,労働移民や結婚移民にかかわる施策の充実,特に韓国人男性との結婚移住女性およびその子どもたちを含めた多文化家族への支援に特化した法律が制定され,支援施策が進行形で日々拡大されていることがわかった。

『天使の戦い』の後,『ガラスの動物園』で,ブロードウェイで大成功を収めた詩人であり,劇作家であるテネシー・ウィリアムズは,1911年ミシシッピー州コロンバスに生を受けた。作家が生まれ育った環境に大きく影響されるのは当然であり,ウィリアムズもまた,生まれ育った牧師館での祖父の宗教感覚と共に南部という環境に大きく影響を受けている。また,その後工業の街セントルイスに引っ越し,そこでの経験や環境の違いなどが彼の描く作品に色濃く反映されている。彼の作品の中で主人公は,自らの心に忠実に生きようとするが,彼らを取り巻く過酷な現実や繊細すぎる神経のため,正気を失っていく。彼らを閉じ込める状況は,閉塞感(=Confinement Imagery)としてウィリアムズ作品での重要なテーマである。本稿では,近親相姦的愛と罪の意識に注目し,その要素が顕著に描かれている『ガラスの動物園』と『欲望という名の電車』及び『二人だけの芝居』を考察することによって,作品の重要なテーマである閉塞感と今もなお上演される彼の作品の魅力を論じてゆく。

タイの日本語教育機関で日本人日本語教師がタイ人日本語教師と協働するとき,何を経験し,課題があればどのようにそれを克服しているのかを質的分析法で調査した。その結果,タイの日本語教育機関における協働には,次の(a)から(c)があることが明らかになった。(a)日本人日本語教師は,日本式の強固な仕事観や指導観を協働現場に持ちこむ。(b)日本人日本語教師は,協働の可能性を見出し,教師間協働に適応していく。(c)日本人日本語教師は,3 年目から充実した協働に入っていける可能性がある。タイの教師間協働に関する研究については,協働の現実や教師の実態を把握するための質的な研究が多かった。しかし,複数の質的な研究で明らかにされた概念や協働の実態についての関連性は曖昧なままであった。本研究では,先行研究で指摘された概念や協働の実態を丁寧に引き継ぎ,繰り返し実施したインタビューのデータから抽出された概念を加えながら,新しい協働体験の仮説モデルを再構築した。

The purpose of this paper is to clarify, using ethnographical data, literacy problems among permanent foreign residents in Japan and discusses the contents and methods of the literacy education they receive. First, the data indicates permanent foreign residents have problems with reading and writing Japanese even if they can speak quite fluently in their daily life. Second, the paper examines the contents and methods of literacy education offered in most community-based Japanese language classes. This study demonstrates that oral education practice is given priority over literacy education, and that this emphasis in language education is not suitable for permanent residents. As a result, many foreigners often miss the chance to study kanji and are unable to read and write sufficiently because of the absence or lack of proper literacy education. Finally, the analysis of educational practices in other classes shows that literacy education suitable for permanent residents would not be `school-type' education, but an education to develop learners' quality of life, and giving them self-confidence, self-esteem, and their own voices through acquiring functional literacy.

This is an introductory study concerning the implications of the human rights `entrenchment' in a written constitution. In Japan, almost all constitutional scholars argue that the provisions of a bill of rights in a written constitution is necessary for the protection of human rights. However, a court's power to declare the statute's constitutionality sometimes does not work even if the legislative branch of government infringes on human rights. In contrast, the Commonwealth of the Australia Constitution Act [the Constitution] has no bill of rights. But various indices, e.g., Andrew Fagan, The Atlas of HUMAN RIGHTS, sometimes indicate that human rights protection in Japan and Australia is equal. In the first section of this article I discuss some reasons. The second section discusses the meanings of "entrenchment" in constitutional context. To discuss this theme, this article compares the human rights protection in Australia and in Japan. This article does not argue whether or not the Commonwealth of Australia or States of Australia should have a bill of rights. In Australia, the Federal Government has no bill of rights in its written constitution, and did not enact a "human rights act". The Constitution has the articles of explicit rights, and the Commonwealth Parliament created the Acts concerning Aboriginal Rights and the Acts concerning the Human Rights Institutions of the Human Rights Conventions of United Nations, which the Commonwealth Government ratified. Many commentators and case laws of the High Court of Australia, which is supreme court of the Commonwealth of Australia, believe the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia implies human rights, and the common law rights derived from United Kingdom has vital importance. The argument against a bill of rights is that Australia has no reason to enact a "human rights act", or has no need to alter its Constitution to include a bill of rights, because Australia has a common law tradition and an enactment of this nature will not make a significant difference to the present situation. In contrast, Commonwealth of Nations, especially New Zealand and the United Kingdom have acts concerning human rights. Moreover, in Canada and South Africa, their written constitutions have a bill of rights. To analyse status quo of Australia, we must consider these constitutions of Commonwealth countries. In conclusion, I argue that the human rights education and the consciences of judges have vital importance.

From 1990's, theories of Japanese Constitutional Law had been radically changed. The constitutional law is discussed by many books and articles of the political theory, history of law, and the philosophical theory. Constitutional theory is influenced by these theories. In this lecture note, I try to reconsider the theories of constitution interpretation, especially the historical aspects and comparative study about the constitutional theory of common law countries, e.g., U.K., Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.

Psychic (occult or supernatural) detectives in fiction enjoy considerable popularity among the public readership. The first character of note is said to be “Dr. Martin Hesselius,” appearing in several stories published in 1872 by the Irish writer Sheridan Le Fanu, and the growth of the genre initially peaked between the late Victorian period and the 1930s. Academic study of the “Psychic Detective” novels, however, has been given much less attention than Gothic Literature or Horror fiction. This paper analyzes several characteristic aspects of this genre, through a discussion comparing it to Gothic novels, ghost stories, and the greater corpus of mainstream detective fiction.
