To identify challenges of a cancer family care learning program for general ward nurses developed in our previous study, we used and evaluated it on a trial basis. We conducted a questionnaire survey using the Scale for the Care of Cancer Patients' Families in General Wards before and after the learning program, involving 80 nurses working on 3 wards of a cooperating hospital. The numbers of respondents in the pre- and post-learning surveys were 43 (response rate: 53.8%) and 30 (37.5%), respectively. Analysis of responses for each factor revealed a tendency to self-evaluate family care more positively after learning. This tendency was marked for {considering patient privacy in multi-bed rooms} (p=0.004) and {accurately recognizing cancer-related changes in family members' roles} (p=0.018), as scores were significantly higher after learning in both cases. As challenges of the learning program, the results indicate the necessity of connecting learning contents and practice, developing effective learning strategies, selecting appropriate nurses for a training session as part of the learning program, and reviewing methods to share learning through training.

We examined the effects of mother's negative and positive emotions related to parenting on occurrence frequency of their child-rearing behaviors among 114 mothers of infants. From the results of this study, it was revealed that mothers' feeling of burden on children's manners and behaviors decreases their satisfaction and enjoyment of childcare, their responsive childcare behaviors and increases their controlled childcare behaviors. Limitation of the present study and direction for future research were discussed.

The present study aimed to explore the important factors related to perceived benefit in daily risk-taking behaviors. A web-based questionnaire survey was conducted for five hundred respondents with a wide range of ages. The list of risk-taking behaviors in daily life was developed by consulting previous studies. The perceived benefit of such behaviors was evaluated using several indicators (e.g. whether the benefit can be obtained with certainty). Results of factor analysis indicated that perceived benefit in risk-taking behavior was mainly evaluated by the intuitive thinking process. Multiple regression analysis also revealed the important effect of such intuitive thinking process on intention of risk-taking. Our research suggested the important components of perceived benefit in risk-taking behaviors. The findings should have also been discussed from the viewpoints of several theories such as the dual process theory used in industrial and social psychology.

In this study, a questionnaire was administered to approximately 800 high school students to examine the relationship between respondents' self-awareness; their subjective evaluation of aspects of their daily lives, such as learning activities and relationships with school friends; and their dependency on smartphones. Their scores on a tendency toward smartphone dependency scale were set as the dependent variable in an analysis. The results showed an interaction between participants' subjective evaluations of their daily lives and their public self-awareness as well as an interaction between the same subjective evaluations and their private self-awareness. These results suggest that high school students who have high self-awareness but lack a positive subjective evaluation of their daily lives have a stronger tendency toward smartphone dependency.

When considering nursing students' subjective adaptation in nursing clinical practicum, it is useful to include factors and processes necessary for nursing students to adapt to the clinical environment. In this study, we semi-structured interviewed 14 novice nurses about clinical practicum they completed as nursing students. The study had a qualitative description design. Based on the interview results, 22 categories were extracted from 320 elements related to subjective adaptation, and the following three factors affecting nursing students' subjective adaptation in clinical practicum were found: [future goals and implications for students], [the reality of clinical practicum felt by students], and [human resources required by students]. The implications of these factors affect each other and are connected, and even if one factor is missing, the risk of impairing subjective adaptation in practicum is increased.

There is a chance of Japanese university students experiencing emotional problems such as anxiety and depression while seeking employment. These issues may have a negative effect on students' performance and accomplishment in job hunting and career development activities. This study focused on career beliefs in order to develop effective career support. Career beliefs are assumptions and generalizations individuals hold about the self and the world of work, which affect their career decision-making and career development. According to existing literature, intervening and modifying career beliefs can be done using cognitive approaches such as Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. The Career Beliefs Inventory (CBI) was developed as an assessment tool for career counseling. This study examined whether the Japanese version of the CBI would be an effective measure. There was insufficient internal consistency and test-retest reliability, and factorial and concurrent validity was open to question. Further research is necessary to develop an assessment tool to measure career beliefs accurately, based on reliability, validity, utility, and construct of irrationality.

We examined experiences of violence between couples and their attitudes regarding such violent experiences by using data of married men and women. We first examined the correlation between experiences of being abused and indulging in physical and psychological abuse from the perspective of violent interactions between couples. Results of chi-square analysis indicated a partial interaction; such that men and women indulge in similar types of acts that they have suffered. However, men indulge in acts of violence even without suffering similar acts. Then, attitudes regarding domestic violence (ADV) were considered a factor in determining violence and the correlation between violent attitudes and physical and psychological abusive behaviors were examined. Results of discriminant analysis indicated that abusive behaviors were positively related to several ADV items in men, whereas abusive behaviors were not related to ADV in women.

The purpose of this study was to develop Tidy-up Behavior Scale Revised (TBS-R) and to examine the reliability and validity. The participants were 204 undergraduate students. Factor analysis showed that the TBS-R consisted of three factors structure; "classification", "disposal" and "orderliness". This scale had a sufficiently high degree of internal consistency (Cronbach's α=.79-.92). The scale validities were confirmed on the basis on the relationship with both the Japanese version of the Saving Inventory-Revised (SI-R) subscales for measuring hoarding symptoms and the Japanese version of the Clutter Image Raging (CIR) for measuring clutter severity evaluated by a picture rating scale measuring the clutter of rooms. From this result, reliability and validity of the TBS-R was supported.

A group work was conducted for newly employed hospital professionals. The program was aimed at relieving their anxiety and helping them develop better relationships. Participants were 31 former students and mid-career staff working at a hospital (mean age = 27.7). Brief POMS was administered as the pre- and post-test to see the change of participants mood. A post-test questionnaire that included subjective assessment items (Nakamura et al., 2011), as well as impressions of group work. An analysis of POMS scores indicated a significant improvement in their mood after the program. The effect sizes also indicated that although the effects of group work are generally high, they are particularly effective for the high risk group. The analysis of subjective evaluation indicated that the participants experienced better relationship in terms of universality, cohesiveness, acceptance (sense of safety), advice and meaningful engagement with other occupations. The group work program with non-invasive warm-up activities for newly workers especially with emotional problems will facilitate adaptation to the workplace.

The present study examined the relationships between the tendency to consume energy drink and personality traits. The participants were 288 Japanese undergraduates (Mage=20.15; 207 females). They completed the questionnaire including Big Five personality traits, sensation seeking, and tendency to consume energy drink. Logistic and Poisson regression analyses revealed that the consumption of energy drink was associated positively with Thrill & Adventure and Disinhibition dimensions of the sensation seeking, which is a part of Extraversion. The results imply the psychological characteristics of its consumers.

The present study investigated the features of the motivation at return to work in EY (Early Years) through the comparison of the UK & Japan, which had opposite direction in a recent policy reform of EY settings. I set the Five groups of 43 returners (13 Nursery Returners & 5 Other occupations Returners in Japan, 5 Nursery Returners, 6 Other occupations Returners, & 14 Returner applicants in England) and collected interview data. The text mining analysis of each group and compared with them chiefly focused on the words that co-occurred with 'Work', and got to 3 findings about the features of Japanese EY returners; 1. Their priority was their own children, the same as Japanese returners in other occupations. 2. They had an ambivalent attitude for their EY qualification. 3. The ratio of the negative relations between "work/working" and "I/myself" was higher. These tendencies regarded as the relation with the lower-leveled professionalism, and a poorer employment practice in part-time working in Japan EY facilities.

This study aims to examine which aspects of Japanese culture Chinese individuals adopted during their stay overseas and if they retained these cultural qualities after their return. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five Chinese individuals who had stayed in Japan for one to eight years. Each interview lasted between 30 to 90 minutes and took place at X University in China, where returnees from Japan worked as academic staff. The results showed that the individuals acquired aspects of the Japanese culture in three main categories: rules or manners (observation of public rules), ways of communication (respecting other people's intentions), and philosophy of life (orientation toward co-existence with others). It appears that Chinese individuals firmly accepted and later internalized Japanese characteristics that they believed were admirable; therefore, it is believed that returnees retained these qualities even after returning to their original society.

Train drivers must look ahead and react to many kinds of signals or signs when driving a train. We investigated whether they could perceive a visual signal when driving a train in actual setting while paying attention to the ordinary signal. In this experiment, train drivers (N = 41) were asked to blow a whistle as quickly as possible, when they see a target light about 610-720 meters ahead. The target light was set to be seen at 0, 1.8, 3.3 degrees away from an ordinary signal on the rail track. Each driver responded for just one target. There were no missed target errors. However, RTs (Reaction times) analysis indicated that RTs for targets separated by 1.8 and 3.3 from the central vision was significantly longer than those at 0. We concluded that when driving a train, it is hard for drivers to respond to a target that was separated from a focused object and discussed applicability of this result to driving environment and driver's education.

Although there have been some studies on safety culture, studies on specific methods to foster safety culture have been limited. Moreover, it is deemed necessary to assess and foster safety cultures not only for individual organizations but also inter-organizationally. In this study, we developed a program to foster safety culture. Thereafter, we applied the program to multi-tiered industrial organizations. Hence, this paper focuses on interorganizational approaches. The program consisted of multiple questionnaire surveys, interview surveys, group works, and monitoring surveys. The subjects of the surveys were members of energy plants. As a result, in general, improvements in the safety culture evaluation were seen after the implementation of countermeasures. In the program consisting of multiple surveys and activities, a certain effect of fostering safety culture in multi-tiered organizations was recognized. Henceforth, more studies will be required on the means of assessing and fostering safety cultures in multi-tiered industrial organizations of various types.

This research aimed to explore the effectiveness and limitations of assertiveness training by using the grounded modified theory approach. Results showed the training to be effective in initiating internal changes, behavioral changes, and other changes in both the participants and the people around them. On the other hand, the training was found to be ineffective in translating its effect into real-life situations as indicated by participants' responses as "The effect of training does not reach real life" and "I was trained that behavior is bound." This can be considered as a limitation of the training.

Educational institutions need to train nursing students with an eye toward vocational readiness to increase the number of graduates who will continue to work in the nursing field. This longitudinal study of junior college nursing students examines the causal relationship between vocational readiness and 3 potentially related factors (School image, degree of understanding of the lessons, and interest in nursing) using the cross-lagged effect model. The only significant relationship observed was between vocational readiness and the student's interest in nursing. As having an interest in nursing increases vocational readiness, fostering an interest in nursing should raise their perceived value of working as a nurse, potentially increasing the number of graduates who remain working as nurses.
