Recently, thinner cover glass has been required therefore the glass strength has been more important. It was found that surface polishing of the glass after chemical strengthening improved surface strength of the glass. In chemical strengthening process water in the atmosphere enters the glass surface and creates chemical defects. The surface strength is improved by removing them.

We present a method that can automatically annotate when and who is appearing in a video stream that is shot in an unstaged condition. Previous face recognition methods were not robust against different shooting conditions, such as those with variable lighting, face directions, and other factors, in a video stream and had difficulties identifying a person and the scenes the person appears in. To overcome such difficulties, our method groups consecutive video frames (scenes) into clusters that each have the same person's face, which we call a “facial-temporal continuum,” and identifies a person by using many video frames in each cluster. In our experiments, accuracy with our method was approximately two or three times higher than a previous method that recognizes a face in each frame.

We developed an interactive system, “Web3D Dance Composer (WDC),” which allows users to create dance choreographies by using a dance motion data archive and simulate them with 3DCG animation. In this research, we conducted two evaluation experiments on the choreographic creation of contemporary dance to evaluate the capacity of the WDC as a dance creation support system. First, we conducted an experiment on choreographic creation for a professional choreographer and proved the usability of the system. Second, we conducted an experiment on training students to create choreography. The results of an evaluation by eight students confirmed that the WDC has the usability and potentiality for producing unpredictable movements and aiding in the learning of a new choreographic process.

Motion graphics is a form of visual expression characterized by non-narrative, non-figurative based visuals that change over time. Due to the expansion of its application areas, a consideration of the affective quality of motion graphics is growing more important. This paper proposes an arousal estimation method that uses optical flow analysis as an affective quality assessment method for motion graphics. The primary objective is to verify two indexes: the total flow amount and the average magnitude of motion vectors. According to correlation analyses between each index and the arousal factor scores of video stimulus derived from an impression test with human participants, the correlation between the average magnitude of motion vectors and the arousal factor scores is significant. An analysis of the distribution of displacements showed that about three pixels per 33.3 msec is the border value: a higher ratio of movement slower than that border reduces the arousal level, and faster movement raises the level.

To establish the superiority of monocular presentation in augmented reality (AR) over binocular presentation, we report two experiments involving a tracing task with an AR image covering a visual field observed in both the monocular and binocular conditions. In Experiment 1, the subjective visibility of the AR image and the accuracy of the tracing task were measured. In Experiment 2, participants identified a character in the AR image while tracing. The AR image was less visible in the monocular condition than in the binocular condition. Hence, participants could observe the real world more easily in the monocular condition, and the resulting performance on the tracing task was better in the monocular condition. Information acquisition from the AR image in the monocular condition was equivalent to that in the binocular condition. These results exhibit the superiority of monocular AR presentation for the performance of manual tasks.

われわれは電子端末の使いやすさ,見やすさについて,目のピント調節と輻輳眼球運動の追従精度から評価できないか検討を行っている.視標を奥行き方向にリニアに移動させることができる装置と組合せ,眼球の水晶体調節と輻輳眼球運動を同時に測定する実験装置を開発し,表示媒体,フォントサイズ,文字フォントといったパラメータを変化させ,奥行き方向に移動させた際の輻輳眼球運動と調節応答の分析を行った.その結果,調節変化量は奥行き移動量に近いものの,表示媒体,フォントサイズ,文字フォントによって違いがあること,輻輳の変化量は,これらのパラメータに依存する傾向はあまりみられなかった.

Recently, augmented reality (AR) by using a projector, which is often called projection-based AR, has been focused on and widely studied. We propose a projection-based AR system, named “Lumipen” for a high-speed or high-frequency object, using a 1000-fps vision sensor and a high-speed optical axis controller. Conventional research on projection-based AR has mainly focused on static objects or circumstances. In our system, the projected direction and projected image can be controlled based on the dynamic object behavior detected by a 1000-fps vision sensor. Instead of a rotational basement, the high-speed optical axis controller is an essential subsystem to catch up with the speed of the 1000-fps vision sensor. Lumipen is expected to provide high-quality visual information addition even in dynamic live content (e.g. a play, sport game, music concert) similar to CG in video content.
