In order to establish the bleaching process for cotton fabrics under the neutral condition, cotton fabrics were bleached by hydrogen peroxide with urea. It was revealed that hydrogen peroxide bleaching with urea showed the higher whiteness of bleached fabrics than that without urea at more than 70 degrees Celsius. Tensile strength did not decrease after bleaching. Some radicals were observed by ESR measurement when urea was added into hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution. The effects of urea on hydrogen peroxide bleaching seems to be caused by active oxygen ; hydroxyl radical, perhydroxyl radical and superoxide anion radical as well as perhydroxyl anion. The residual hydrogen peroxide concentrations in bleaching baths were measured. When urea is added to the bleaching baths, the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide is accelerated even in the neutral bath.

Chinese ink blurring on various papers for calligraphy was examined by the use of non-diluted or diluted inks. The blurring indices based on Klemm Method, the ink absorption, the unevenness of the outlines at the blurring heads, represented well the changing of the blurring. The blurring evaluation based on human's feeling also corresponded to the changing of the blurring indices. Specially, the blurring index based on the unevenness of the outlines at the blurring heads, as show in Fractal dimension, was preferable to represent the blurring evaluation based on human's feeling.

Viscosities of dilute acrylonitrile polymer solution containing various kinds of non-solvent were measured at 30°C and 50°C (in the case of acetone 30°C and 40°C). Intrinsic viscosity [η] and Huggins' constant were calculated and viscosity change with time of concentrated polymer solution were measured.The results obtained are as follows:A) In the case of dilute solution, 1) Nitromethane, acetone, n-hexane and tetrahydrofuran (THF) increase [η] but k′ decreases with increasing amount of them and temperature rises. They behave as poor solvents.2) Dioxane does not change [η] and k′ below 5 volume % benzene behaves as good solvent below 10 volume %, however, it behaves as poor solvent above that content.B) In the case of concentrated solution, Concentrated solution containing n-hexane increases viscosity with time and with the increasing amount. Benzene, THF and dioxane do not cause viscosity increase below a certain amount, however, they increase viscosity with time.

In order to save resources and energy in textile washing, ultrasound was applied as a mechanical action for soil removal. Plain-woven polyester, cotton and polyester/cotton (65/35) fabrics were soiled with oleic acid, carbon black or oleic acid/carbon black mixture as a model soil. The artificially soiled fabrics were washed in an aqueous anionic surfactant solution with applying 38 kHz ultrasound. The detergency determined by the surface reflectance method rapidly increased with time and attained almost constant within a few minutes. The detergency after 1 min washing was found to increase with increasing electric power consumption of ultrasound. The washing tests were repeated ten times in the same wash bath to save water and detergent and the obtained detergency did not change significantly. The detergency of oleic acid and oleic acid/carbon black mixture after washing with 420W ultrasound for 1 min was comparable to that with Wascator, a horizontal axis drum type washer. Furthermore, the mechanical action values obtained for ultrasonic washing were much smaller than those for Wascator, indicating that the fabric damage can be prevented by applying ultrasound to textile washing.
