Conductive polymer coated micro-cantilever array made by reel-to-reel continuous fiber process as the electrical contact components for woven electronic textile was investigated. We report the novel cantilever releasing method using air injection and the results of patternable CYTOP and organic conductive polymer using nanoimprinting method. The conductive organic material used in this study is PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(4-styrenesulfonate)). Micro-cantilever contact array is realized to compose the electrical circuit through the large area woven textile. The contact resistance of 480 Ω is hold on for over 500 times. Contact resistance measurements revealed that an electric current begins to flow with smaller contact force for PEDOT:PSS coated cantilever array structure than for PEDOT:PSS film structure. There is no appreciable wear on cantilever surface due to its movability after 10<SUP>3</SUP> cycles contact test with 0.5 N contact force. Based on these results, PEDOT:PSS coated micro-cantilever array have excellent potential as electrical contact components between weft and warp for woven electronic textile.

The dependence of radiophotoluminescence (RPL) and photoluminescence (PL) properties on x-ray irradiation dose and heat-treatment after irradiation was investigated for Ag<sup>+</sup>-activated phosphate glass, which is practically used as glass dosimeter for individual monitoring of ionizing radiation. The RPL intensity was increased with increasing x-ray irradiation dose, while the PL intensity was oppositely decreased with x-ray dose. The glass exhibited the vice versa tendency between the PL and RPL changes for heat-treatment at 250&deg;C after x-ray irradiation, that is, the PL intensity was increased with annealing time, while RPL was decreased with annealing time. These results strongly support that the luminescence center of the PL is Ag<sup>+</sup> and the centers of yellow RPL and blue RPL are Ag<sup>2+</sup> and Ag<sup>0</sup>, respectively, which has been proposed in previous report. In addition, annealing temperature at 250&deg;C for 40 min made it possible to save much energy and time required for recovering the used glass dosimeter to initial condition before x-ray irradiation.<br>It was also found from the dose dependence of the RPL intensity that the RPL intensity was saturated around higher dose region than about 15Gy, which means that there is no linearity between RPL intensity and radiation dose in high dose region.

We have developed a multichannel taste sensor with artifical lipid membranes and have applied it to quantification of taste of green tea. We used multiple regression analysis and found high correlations of outputs of the taste sensor with the results of sensory test (taste, flavor and color) and chemical analyses (amino acids and tannin that are main taste substances in green tea). It is concluded that the taste sensor has a potential for quantification of taste of green tea. The taste sensor responds not only to amino acids and tannin, but also to many other taste substances, and hence it contains much more taste information than conventional chemical analyses.

A CO<sub>2</sub> sensor was set up by using Na<sub>3</sub>Zr<sub>2</sub>Si<sub>2</sub>PO<sub>12</sub> (NASICON) as a solid electrolyte, Li<sub>2</sub>CO<sub>3</sub> as a carbonate phase. The EMF (Electromotive force) was linear to the logarithm of CO<sub>2</sub> concentration and hardly depended on interfering gases by using a zeolite filter. The &Delta; EMF (EMF<sub>Air</sub>-EMF<sub>Gas</sub>) was stable even after the test of unpowered exposure to a high humidity atmosphere. The CO<sub>2</sub> monitor in which the CO<sub>2</sub> concentration is calculated by the &Delta; EMF using a new renovating system of the standard EMF was developed as a monitor for air quality control. The output of the monitor indicated a good agreement with that of the usual NDIR analyzer at the field-test in the office.

A taste sensor with global selectivity is composed of several kinds of lipid/polymer membranes for transforming information of taste substances into electric signal. The sensor output shows different patterns for chemical substances which have different taste qualities such as saltiness and sourness. Taste interactions such as suppression effect, which occurs between bitterness and sweetness, can be detected and quantified using the taste sensor. The taste and also smell of foodstuffs such as beer, coffee, mineral water, soup and milk can be discussed quantitatively. The taste sensor provides the objective scale for the human sensory expression. Multi-modal communication becomes possible using a taste/smell recognition microchip, which produces virtual taste. We are now standing at the beginning of a new age of communication using digitized taste.

Voice recognition utilizing bone-conducted voice, which is very robust under noisy environment, has been investigated. The suitability for voice recognition and voice communication of bone-conducted voice recorded at several measurement points on human head was evaluated using LPC cepstrum distance (LCD) and Speech Transmission Index (STI). Experimental results show that forehead and cheek are good as the acquisition points of bone-conducted voice. In order to improve the quality of bone-conducted voice, a novel sensor, which has an inclined frequency response, was fabricated. Using the sensor, acquired bone-conducted voice has a similar frequency response as that of air-conducted voice. Spectral Subtraction is suggested as a method to improve the voice recognition ratio of bone-conducted voice.

Plant can recognize the environmental factors, for example temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure and light intensity. Humans can identify the capabilities by measuring the plant bioelectrical potential. It can also recognize the breezing wind. Plants can be regarded as an environmental sensor by using the potential. In this study, the bioelectrical potential characteristic to the wind grade was examined. As for the results, the correlation between the characteristic and the grade was derived. The correlation coefficient was very high. The integrated value for the potential was adopted to derive the relation. Plant can identify the wind intensity by adopting the value. It became obvious that plant has higher capabilities to sense the environmental factors not only temperature, humidity and light intensity but also wind intensity. The application field of plant will spread by using these results.

The bioelectric potential of a foliage plant changes according to an occupant's behavior, for example entering the room in which the plant is installed, as well as watering and touching the plant. The potential shows the impulse responses due to the behaviors. In this study, the integrated values of the bioelectric potential were adopted to identify those behaviors. There are two types of values. Those were derived by integrating the bioelectric potential characteristics for a minute (<i>v</i><sub><i>m1</i></sub>) and for an hour (<i>v</i><sub><i>h1</i></sub>) respectively. The histogram of the values <i>v</i><sub><i>m1</i></sub> for the steady state perfectly took a normal distribution. The frequencies of <i>v</i><sub><i>m1</i></sub> for the behaviors were different compared with the steady state distribution. The system can identify the behaviors by examining the frequency table of <i>v</i><sub><i>m1</i></sub>. Conversely, it is thought the plant gives us some suggestions using bioelectric potential characteristics. A clue for communication between humans and plants was also obtained. The <i>v</i><sub><i>h1</i></sub> becomes higher as the average room temperature (<i>t</i><sub><i>r</i></sub>) becomes lower. There was a negative correlation between <i>v</i><sub><i>m1</i></sub> and <i>t</i><sub><i>r</i></sub>. There were two groups in the scatter diagram of the variables <i>v</i><sub><i>m1</i></sub> and <i>t</i><sub><i>r</i></sub>.

An exposure method for realizing fine patterning on three-dimensional samples is described. Three-dimensional sample requires the different viewpoint from that of the proximity patterning. Concave areas can not be geometrically approached to the mask. The fine patterning becomes difficult due to the broadening of the exposure light. In this study, the phase shift mask is combined with the well-collimated mercury lamp. 5 μm-width line pattern is stably obtained on the 200 μm-deep cavity bottom.

In field of cardiovascular surgeries, palpation of aorta plays important roles in decision of surgical site.This paper develops palpation simulator of aorta based on a finite element based physical model.The proposed model calculates soft tissue deformation according to the affection of inner pressure and the operation of a surgeon.The proposed method is implemented on a prototype with dual PHANToM device.Experimental results confirmed our model achieves real time simulation of the surgical palpation.

Many kinds of chemical sensors have been developed to detect various air-pollutants. Generally sensor systems are composed of plural chemical sensors and a computer, and the systems can derive kinds of pollutants, densities of the pollutants, and various risks for environments and humans. Regarding the research of sensor systems, there are literatures about a sensor agent, which regards a sensor as an agent, and a utility mobile robot which attaches odor sensors. In these systems, it is necessary that observed results output by the sensors are exactly analyzed with information processing; especially, it is important to recognize the occurrence of events such as outbreaks of odor, however, this kind of recognitions are still not enough and it does not mean that the systems can recognize all the environmental events. In this research, odor sensors are treated and generally odor sensors are designed modeling functions of human nose. Hence, as well as odor sensors, we aim improving the accuracy of environmental recognitions using an odor sensor system attaching an information processing function according to human senses. In addition, we show the usefulness of the proposed system comparing with a conventional technique.
