Downsizing of motors by achieving a high power density is required to meet the emission regulations of each country. In this study, we developed a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with high space factor, which enables the motor to be downsized. This PMSM applies the welding-less rectangular coil to shorten the axial motor length. The developed PMSM was verified by elemental and measurement tests. The test results confirmed that (i) the local heating of the welding-less coil was 4.5K and (ii) the torque and coil temperature of the developed PMSM reached their design values.

This paper presents a new configuration for the concentrated windings of permanent magnet motors in order to reduce the torque ripple. There are limited choices for the concentrated windings in conventional permanent magnet motors when selecting the numbers of poles and slots, which results in winding factors for harmonics that cannot be zero and the corresponding torque ripple remains. Unlike conventional concentrated-winding motor, whose teeth are all wound with one coil, the proposed concentrated-winding motor has some teeth with multiple coils wound around. The number of turns for each coil can be optimized to reduce its winding factors for harmonics to nearly zero so that the corresponding torque ripple could be significantly reduced. Prototypes of the conventional and proposed motors were constructed, and the experimental results are compared. Simulation and experimental results confirm the torque reduction effect of the proposed concentrated-winding motor.

We develop an automatic Live Linux rebuilding system for science and engineering education, such as information processing education, numerical analysis and so on. Our system is enable to easily and automatically rebuild a customized Live Linux from a ISO image of Ubuntu, which is one of the Linux distribution. Also, it is easily possible to install/uninstall packages and to enable/disable init daemons. When we rebuild a Live Linux CD using our system, we show number of the operations is 8, and the rebuilding time is about 33 minutes on CD version and about 50 minutes on DVD version. Moreover, we have applied the rebuilded Live Linux CD in a class of information processing education in our college. As the results of a questionnaires survey from our 43 students who used the Live Linux CD, we obtain that the our Live Linux is useful for about 80 percents of students. From these results, we conclude that our system is able to easily and automatically rebuild a useful Live Linux in short time.

A modular multilevel cascade inverter based on double-star chopper cells (MMCI-DSCC) is expected as one of the next-generation multilevel PWM inverters for medium-voltage motor drives. This paper presents theoretical and experimental discussions on a practical speed-sensorless start-up method for an induction motor driven by the MMCI-DSCC from a standstill to a middle speed. This motor drive is suitable, especially for a large-capacity fan- or blower-like load, the torque of which is proportional to a square of the motor mechanical speed. Unlike the so-called &ldquo;volts-per-hertz&rdquo; control, three-phase stator currents are based on &ldquo;feedback&rdquo; control, whereas their amplitude and frequency are based on &ldquo;feedforward&rdquo; control. Although the motor drive has no speed sensor attached to the motor shaft, this method makes a slow start-up stable with the help of a stator current-feedback loop. Experimental results obtained from a 400-V, 15-kW downscaled system verify the stable operating performance from a standstill to a middle speed of 590min<sup>-1</sup> with a 40% load torque.

Smart timetabling optimization is a cost-effective way to improve the quality of railway service. Partial introduction of rapid trains is one of the effective methods for improving passenger service quality. However, it is difficult to concretely perform smart train scheduling. In this paper, we apply mixed integer programming for minimizing the total travelling time of passengers to obtain optimal train scheduling for the combination of all-station and partially introduced rapid trains. This method requires higher computational time to obtain the optimal solution than other metaheuristic methods; however, the solution guarantees to be an optimal one. We also propose an appropriate method to digitize the OD (Origin Destination)-patterns, i.e., the traffic demand inputs between two stations, which are suitable for the framework of the proposed mixed integer programming method. We apply the method to a case study of a commercial subway and demonstrate the advantages of the proposed train service with the partial introduction of rapid trains.

Because the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is one of the most efficient motors, it is applied to many industrial machines. The electromagnetic characteristic of IPMSM is dependent on many design parameters such as the position and shape of flux barrier, the magnetization angle of permanent magnet, the current phase angle and so on. The topology optimization (TO), which is an attractive method due to the wide design range with high degree of freedom, has been applied to the rotor design of IPMSM. In this paper, two stage TO method is proposed. Firstly, to widely search the rotor structure, the density method (DM) which handling gray scale is carried out. Next, the obtained structure is set to the initial structure of level-set method (LSM), the local search is carried out. The performance of proposed TO method composed of DM and LSM is compared with the single TO method (DM or LSM) in the design problem in which the object is the determination of the rotor structure composed of permanent magnet, rotor core and flux barrier to improve the torque characteristics and the magnet demagnetization.

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are widely used in various applications as high-power-density and highly efficient drive sources. However, a PMSM generates electromagnetic vibration because of the space and time harmonics. In this paper, we propose a synchronous PWM control method for shifting the carrier wave phase against the modulated wave. As the proposed control matches the ripple frequencies caused by the spatial and time harmonics, the ripple caused by the space harmonics is canceled by that caused by the time harmonics, with the phase shift of the carrier wave. The phase shift of the carrier wave is confirmed experimentally. In addition, it is experimentally verified that the vibration of the proposed method at a specific frequency is reduced by 46%@7,900r/min and 53%@19,500r/min.
