With rapid growth of the number of literatures on nonlinear systems, nonlinearities existing in the systems under study have drawn much attention. Studies on the effects of nonlinearities in power systems have been becoming an increasingly important part of researches for the investigation of system stability. It is probable that hidden phenomena may unexpectedly emerge due tc the nonlinearities that are involved in load flow equations, generator swing equations and characteristics of control equipments and loads, etc.<br> This paper presents a new Catastrophe Theory application to nonlinear power systems. Making use of the concept of Duffing's equation, we show that a Catastrophe Theory analogy can be used to interpret unstable phenomena caused by system nonlinearities from the viewpoint of oscillations. When considering the system nonlinearities, due to ill-combination of system parameters and periodic disturbances, there may exist the characteristic &ldquo;jumps&rdquo; in system states corresponding to slow (quasi-dynamic) changes of the frequencies of periodic disturbances. With this Catastrophe Theory approach, a system bifur-cation set can be identified to assess the unstable phenomena of power systems.

The design theory for a band pass filter (BPF) is applied for the analysis of the resonant-type wireless power transfer system. Since the system transmits the electromagnetic energy through evanescent wave coupling between two resonators, it is just a two-stage band pass filter, as long as the circuit matching is taken into account.The present design theory allows different terminal resistances, that is, the generator and load impedances can be different. Since the load for the power transfer varies according to the practical applications, matching ability for arbitrary load is quite important.In addition, the transfer loss is analytically derived by the BPF theory, which has not been given so far. The analytical expression shows what parameters are crucial for the wireless power transfer.Some comments are given about the term “magnetic resonance” that is frequently used among the researchers of wireless power transfer. It is only adequate to describe the resonance of the precession of spins (magnetic moments) that is magnetized. “Magnetic resonance” should be read “magnetic coupling” for the present system.

For this study, the dynamic reduction effect of CO2 gas discharge for change from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles, EVs, was investigated quantitatively. The Japanese power generation status, which shows characteristics of electricity generation, and optimized adjustment to electricity demand, load and environment was examined. Based on a CO2 gas discharge basic unit, the estimated reduction quantity of CO2 gas discharge from EVs was calculated. The reduction effect of CO2 gas discharge is expected to be 52% by changing gas-fuelled vehicles to EVs. However, the dynamic differential is only 19% reduction by using the thermal power and -2% if only the coal thermal power is used.

This paper proposed a calculation method of the torque and power density especially for the fractional-slot concentrated winding machines. The torque coefficient and the inductance coefficient to transform from m-slot/n-pole machine to 3-phase/2-pole machine are used. Some machines were designed and these torque densities and power densities are compared. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed calculation method and have good accordance with both calculation results and FEA results.

From growing interests in the environment issues, promotion of photovoltaic power generation (PV) is accelerated in the world. Meanwhile, rapid chargers (RCs) for popularized electric vehicles are being installed in urban areas. These two trends in distribution system might cause severer voltage fluctuation problems. On the other hand, a RC can provide the reactive power support, which is capable of voltage regulation. Based on this viewpoint, this paper proposes a new framework of voltage regulation, in which the reactive power compensation by RCs is actively utilized. The proposed voltage regulation method combines two different control functions with consideration for over-compensation avoidance. This paper ascertains the validity of proposed voltage regulation method through numerical simulations.

This paper proposes an arc contact loss rate estimating method for Shinkansen trains with pantographs connected to bus cables. For the speedup of Shinkansen, it is necessary to judge whether the contact loss rate exceeds its standard value. As the standard of contact loss rate is provided from the viewpoint of contact strip wear caused by arcs, it is important to measure the amount of arc. The optical type contact loss measuring method which detects the contact loss by arcs is suitable for this purpose. It is difficult, however, to measure contact loss by this method in the daytime, because of the influence of outdoor light. To solve the above problem, we have developed an arc contact loss rate estimating method by using a contact loss simulation program on the basis of the complete contact loss rate measured by the current type contact loss measuring method which is effective in the daytime. Furthermore, we measured the contact loss rate simultaneously by the current and optical type contact loss measuring methods in the running tests of Shinkansen trains, and confirmed the validity of this estimation through a comparison of measured and simulated results.

<p>A Tesla coil is a resonant transformer circuit that generates very high voltages which are made to arc through the air. Recently, a solid state Tesla coil was produced according to developing the semiconductor. In addition, the solid state Tesla coil makes sound by the air discharge. Hence, the sound is used as musical devices. In the past, the musical solid state Tesla coils are generated by PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) method. However, it is difficult to use the high pitch sound and the tone color. This paper investigates the musical solid state Tesla coil by using not PWM method but PRF (Pulse Repetition Frequency) method. As the result, the proposed musical solid state Tesla coil provides good sound.</p>

This paper proposes a novel modulation technique that reduces both motor acoustic noise and switching loss. The conventional discontinuous PWM method can reduce the switching loss to a greater extent compared to the conventional three-phase modulation method; however, the acoustic noise of the motor increases. The proposed technique adjusts the zero-sequence voltage given to the voltage references in such a way that the discontinuous part of the conventional discontinuous PWM method is changed smoothly. The switching loss with the proposed technique can be reduced to 58% of that with the conventional three-phase modulation method. The experimental results show that the acoustic noise can be reduced to a greater extent with the proposed technique compared to that with the conventional discontinuous PWM method.

Recently in Japan, large-scale introduction of photovoltaics (PVs) has been under way. This development increases the likelihood of system voltage increase and fluctuations, which can be prevented by employing PV output prediction. In this study, we focus our attention on applying PV output prediction to system operation with the objective of system voltage control. In this paper, 30 minutes ahead prediction is assumed according to prior research with prediction error consideration. System voltages of 30 minutes ahead are estimated and are controlled in advance by using transformer taps and static capacitors. In this paper, voltage control is proposed for coordinating control, which is based on one of the games in the game theory, potential game. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by running simulations using a modified IEEE 30 bus system. By applying the proposed method, both the voltage deviations and control counts improved considerably compared to a conventional method.
