While the world's oil situation appears increasingly precarious under the impact of the reduction of oil supply provoked by the Iranian coup and OPEC's successive price increase, the “Tentative prospect on the long-term demand and supply of energy” which was published by the Demand-Supply Subcommittee of the Government's Comprehensive Energy Survey Commission in August 1979, highlighted coal as the most realistic energy source in place of oil.Our company, being the supplier of electricity located in the coal-producing region, has long committed itself to providing a stable supply of power primarily based on the coal-burning power plants, along the line of the national policy.This paper describes the outline of the boilers in our existing coal-fired steam power plants, characteristics of the fuel coal, hauling methods and equipment, disposition and possible utilization of the cinder ash, and anti-pollution measures, and further relates on the necessary considerations on expanding the use of coal, notably on the design of boiler and antipollution measures in using overseas coal, as well as the present state and unsettled problems of novel coal combustion technology such as COM, with on aim of providing information that will be useful for the planning and implementation of a coal utilization project.

Mechanism of mechanical strengths is discussed for corrugated fiberboards of single face, single wall and double wall. The strength under the tensile load is discussed by the experimental results of the tensile deformation. Their strengths under the surface compression and the uniform bending made from the applied moment of the axis along the machine direction are discussed by elastic theory. Different mechanism of the strength is denoted for the deifference of the fiberboard.From the mechanism, the argument of the design for their fiberboards is performed on obtained effective results. And the determination of the reasonable shape for their fiberboards is studied from the obtained stress behavior.

20 years ago, few newspapers printed copies with four-color printing because of the technical limitations of the pre-press and printing press. Since the introduction of computerized pre-press systems and automated plate-making and printing equipment, you probably see four-color items on most newspaper everyday.Once the color reproduction process required experts. Now computerized color processing technology makes it editors' jobs. They choose a favorite picture on a display screen and then hit a command button to transmit it to a designated page. When the development of a new advertisement system is completed, which gets originals with digital form via web from advertisement agencies, process time required for putting an advertisement on a page will be shortened and the quality of printings would be better.Japanese newspapers utilize offset presses for four-color printing in general. Satellite type machines were dominant in the past. A tower type machine appeared in the Japanese market 4 to 5 years ago and it thrives at present for the space efficiency and more color pages.

Since the worldwide pulp bleaching technologies have been changing rapidly from chlorine to non-chlorine, the role of hydrogen peroxide in pulp bleaching is getting more and more important recently. Hydrogen peroxide is a rather unstable bleaching reagent especially under the presence of metalic ions. Yet, the decomposition mechanisms are not well understood. Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide leads to the formation of acitive oxygen species which take part in the reaction with chemical components of pulp and it makes the chemistry of hydrogen peroxide bleaching even more complicated.Hydrogen perxiode itself is a nucleophylic reagent. It is often used in alkaline media to form an even stronger nucleophile which is a hydroperoxy anion. It can be used as an electrophile through activation by various methods. The active oxygen species formed from hydrogen peroxide may also react with pulp constituents as bleaching reagents. Thus, there are many kinds of reactions possible in hydrogen peroxide bleaching. However, the selevities of the reactions, which are to decompose lignin without docomposing cellulose, have got to be always taken into consideration.In view of above mentioned points, discussed here are several bleaching processes such as stabilized hydrogen peroxide bleaching, high temperature hydrogen peroxide bleaching, acidic hydrogen peroxide bleaching, dioxirane bleaching and peracid bleaching.

In the previous papers, we have studied the influence of UV treatments on physical and optical properties of paper, and several characteristic results for UV treatments were obtained. In this paper, therefore, the mechanisms of the changes on physical properties, especially such as double folds, Young's modulus and water absorption values, by UV treatments of paper were examined in terms of molecular-order analyses of pulp and rosin chemicals.Cellulose in amorphous regions and hemicellulose are depolymerized through oxidative and/or radical reactions by UV treatments. This depolymerization leads to the formation of stable intermolecular hydrogen bond by molecular rearrangement, and thus the decrease in hydroxyl groups, which can interact with moisture or water, causes the decrease in hydrophilic properties of paper. This new hydrogen bond formation brings about the increase in Young's modulus, and even the slight decrease in moisture contents of paper probably causes the drastic decrease in double folds. On the other hand, porous structures of paper were found to be unchanged by UV treatments, and cross-linking reactions between cellulose chanis were not likely to form during the treatments.Rosin chemicals are degraded to form hydrophilic groups such as carboxylic acid from their double bonds by UV treatments. This causes the decrease in sizing degrees of rosin-sized paper, while the UV treatments bring about the increase in sizing degrees for rosin-free paper such as neutral paper owing to the formation of the stable hydrogen bond, as described above.

Lower energy and investment cost for the Medium Consistency (MC) O<SUB>2</SUB> system than for conventional High Consistency systems was the motivation for the development of the described MCO<SUB>2</SUB> system. After development work in a pilot plant, the described commercial MC system wasstarted up in June 1980, reducing the Kappa No. a part of the production from a continuous Hi-Heat digester from 45 to 25.<BR>The system incorporates, outside the MC oxygen mixer and hydraulic reactor, also a pressure diffuser for washing and a splitter for diverting of the pulp from the digester.<BR>The data shows that the pulp quality for the HC and MC systems are comparable. With lower energy and investment costs and comparable chemical consumption, the MC system, being more flexible for installation in old pulp lines, should make O<SUB>2</SUB> delignification more attractive than before.

Utilization of Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) in kraft pulp bleaching is increasing globally due to the recent trend in the paper and pulp industry i.e., the change to ECF or TCF production system has been increasing. Nowadays usage of H2O2 is rather common technique in Nordic countries. H2O2 bleaching is friendly to environment and satisfies pulp quality and bleaching cost also.This report explains following basic information concerning H2O2 : (1) History of Japanese H2O2 industry, (2) Production method, (3) Application, (4) physical & chemical properties, (5) Quality, (6) Applicable law, (7) Storage & handling facilities, (8) Examples of accident.

In the present paper, an investigation of some different ECF bleaching sequence is presented, and the results compared. Special attention is paid to the importance of the first bleaching stage after oxygen delignification, <I>i. e.</I> the so-called delignifying bleaching stage. Two different mill-oxygen-delignified HW kraft pulps were subjected to a number of different bleaching sequences. The first pulp was bleached according to D (EO) D, D * (EO) D, (ZD) (EO) D, Z (EO) D and after interpolation evaluated at 89% ISO brightness, and the second pulp according to D (EP) D, D * (EP) D, (ZD) (EP) D, A * ZD (EP) D and after interpolation evaluated at 87% ISO brightness. The "*" here denotes a treatment at high temperature and log retention time. Both the use of D * and Z efficiently reduced the yellowing tendency of the pulps when compared to the conventional D-based ECF sequences. Based on the laboratory trials, consumption figures were adjusted to reflect mill operating conditions and the differences in operational costs between the different sequences were calculated. The sequences with D * were economically very attractive, showing high savings in operational costs compared to the reference D (EO) D and D (EP) D sequences, especially when the target brightness was somewhat higher, <I>i. e</I>. 89%. Considering the unit costs, the required investments needed for Z-based sequences were found to be difficult to justify, especially when the target brightness is somewhat lower, <I>e. g</I>. 87% ISO.

This report summarizes production, properties and handling of hydrogen peroxide, including its application as bleaching agent for pulp and paper industry.The demand of hydrogen peroxide in Japan has been remained almost flat for several years since its demand for pulp and paper industry has not significantly grown recently. On the other hand its demand for industrial use has been increasing because of considerable consumption for semi-conductors.In foreign countries the consumption of hydrogen peroxide for pulp and paper industry exceeds 50% of its total demand. Bleaching sequence has been changing to ECF, TCF and furthermore there is a trend toward TEF (Total Effluent Free), i.e. totally enclosed system of effluent from pulp and paper mills. Status of such development varies from one country to another. In Northern Europe these movements have been remarkably developing, and there are many mills those who have employed such system for actual operation.Bleaching process for BKP has been moving to the system free of chlorine. The tendency to convert O, C and H to P, Paa, Z, PO, Paad, CA (Caro's acid) is forecasted with higher probability and has been the target for process development.Hydrogen peroxide decomposes to water and oxygen, which means this chemical to be one of extremely environmentally sound bleaching agents for pulp and paper industry.

In Germany, the cement bag industry started about 40-50 years ago. The development of the same industry in the United States gave an impetus to the improvement of German cement bag manufacture. In the beginning, they were made from kraft paper imported from Northern Europe. The improvement of the cement bag industry of Germany owed much to Prof. Hertzberg. A great progress was made in the quality of cement bags when the paper was standardized. Owing to the control of importation and the increased demand of paper. bags, there was a shortage of home-made kraft paper and as a result, sulfite pulp had to be mixed to a great extent, causing deterioration in paper quality. The writer points out many difficulties thus overcomed in Germany and wants to encourage especially those engaged in the manufacture of cement bag paper in Japan.

The IP (Industrial Platform) system developed by IHI have made possible the speedy and economical construction of plants even in undeveloped areas of the world far from industrialized zones and lacking infrastructures.This paper presents the application results of the IP system applied to the construction of a pulp plant.The plant, having a designed production capacity of 750 t/d bleached kraft pulp, consists of a pulp manufacturing process plant and a power/chemical recovery plant, each of which was constructed in the configuration of a huge floating platform.This unique IP system pulp plant was towed over 25, 000km by ocean and river routes on a three-month voyage from Japan to the plant site of the Amazon of Brazil where, after being grounded and installed permanently, it has been put into commercial operation for producing pulp for export.

The chemistry and toxic effects of dioxins are reviewed. The possible sources of dioxins are chlorination of dibenzo-p-dioxin, dimerization of chlorophenols and other complex mechanism. The fate of dioxins in the environment is referred especially in relation to soil pollution. Analytical method is based on capillary column GC/MS either by low resolution and high resolution mass spectrometry.Toxicology of dioxins is reviewed especially focussing on their mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. Current regulation standards are also referred.
