The massive deployment of PV and wind, which provides decarbonized energy supply, bring about various additional challenges, among those, the reduction of operational capacity of synchronous machines in a power system have been affecting stable operation of a power system. With the reduced system inertia, the system frequency deviates faster and more largely and the deviation sometimes results in instability of a power system operation. In this paper, we present the trend of system inertial reduction from 2030 to 2040 in Japan and quantify the cost increase when criteria of system inertia are applied. We further present the benefit of a PV PCS which can supply system inertia in terms of an improved system inertia profile and a reduction of annual operational cost in order to evaluate a strategy to maintain a system inertia.

Considering interconnection of a large-capacity of wind power generation to the utility grid, it is of great concern that its output power fluctuation has adverse influences, e.g. frequency fluctuation. There have so far been some research works on installation of battery energy storage systems (BESS), as a solution of these problems. However, owing to very high cost of the BESS, its capacity should be as small as possible. In this paper, not only the installation of the BESS as one of measures of suppressing the frequency fluctuation caused by wind power generation, but also blade pitch angle control for blunting the output power of wind turbine generators (WTGs) is also considered. This paper proposes a coordinated control method of the BESS and the blade pitch angle, and evaluates reduction of the capacity of the BESS and the power generation loss caused by blunting the output power which should be originally generated by WTGs.

There exist two types of photo-induced effects on TiO2 surface. One is the conventional photocatalytic reaction and the other is photo-induced highly hydrophilic conversion, proceeding on the TiO2 surface irradiated with UV light. Various materials coated with TiO2 transparent films can show self-cleaning, anti-fogging, and cooling effects with small amount of water. Their industrial applications are also introduced. Moreover, the mechanism for the highly hydrophilic conversion is suggested, considering the recent experimental results. That is, not the conventional photocatalytic decomposition of the strains on the TiO2 surface but the increase in the amount of hydroxyl groups on its surface irradiated with UV light is responsible for the hydrophilic conversion.
