This paper describes the properties of proprioceptive sensations induced by an asymmetric vibration using a vibration speaker-type non-grounded haptic interface. We confirm that the vibration speaker generates a perceived force that pulls or pushes a user's hand in a particular direction when an asymmetric amplitude sound signal that is generated by inverting a part of a sine wave is input. We conducted 5 psychophysical experiments and evaluated the subjects' physical properties in order to apply this phenomenon for a variety of applications. As a result, we confirmed that the vibration speaker was able to control both the direction and magnitude of the reaction force by changing the input signal.

This paper describes a method of synthesizing haptic sensation to the whole human body using vibrators in large working volume virtual environment. In such environment, haptic devices must have following characteristics, (1) large working volume (2) light weight (3) easy to move. Vibrating device is satisfied such characteristics. By setting some vibrators to user's body and controlling the pattern of the vibration, we can feel the virtual object. We developed a vibrator suit in CABIN(Computer Augmented Booth for Image Navigation). Using this system, we can feel virtual objects and walls through the whole body and walk virtual world to avoid interfering these walls. The effectiveness of this system is tested through experiment.

The "SpinDome" is an image display using wide-angle spherical screen. Sphere is an ideal shape of a screen that covers human visual field. The optical system of the SpinDome employs two mirrors: a flat mirror and a spherical convex mirror. The flat mirror bends the light so that the viewer can see the image from the center of the spherical screen. This optical configuration enables seamless wide-angle image in a very limited space. A rotary mechanical shutter is set in front of the projectors, which provides stereoscopic image. Effectiveness of the display is exemplified by maneuvering a remote vehicle.

球面没入型ディスプレイで実画像を呈示するには従来のNTSCベースでは解像度の低さが問題であった。本研究ではHDTVを用いることで有効垂直走査線の数を243本から756本に増加させ解像度の向上を図った。またHDTVの画像アスペクト比16:9も原画上の画素利用率に有利に働くことを確認した。これらにより、水平、垂直ともに約3倍の解像度を得られることになる。シミュレーションに基づきプロトタイプを製作し評価を行った結果,従来よりも高い解像度を得た。

本研究では歩車混在空間において人および移動体それぞれが安全かつ安心して移動するために、自身の情報を発信する外向きヒューマンマシンインタフェース(外向きHMI)の評価のために、人が歩行する空間と車両が走行する空間を物理的に別々に構築し、バーチャルリアリティ技術や拡張現実感技術を用いて両者を統合するシステムを開発する。このシステムを用いて、歩車混在空間での人と移動体の間の情報のやり取りの特徴や、機械学習による行動予測に基づく外向きHMIを人や移動体に重畳してバーチャルに実装する。その時の反応や通行リスクの変化を比較することで、外向きHMIの開発・評価システムや外向きHMIの必要要件を明らかにする。

本研究では、全方向に動く移動機構を有する可動床が、循環することによって無限に続く歩行面を提供する、歩行感覚呈示装置を実装し、それに昇降機構を搭載することによって、階段などの凹凸面のある歩行面を模擬することを実現した。本システムが体験者に与える効果を、足圧力等の計測によって評価した。

This paper presents a system that consists of three robots to imitate the motion of top volleyball blockers. In a volleyball match, in order to score by spiking, it is essential to improve the hitting percentage of each spiker. To increase the hitting percentage, iterative spiking training with actual blockers is required. Therefore, in this study, a block machine system was developed that can be continuously used in an actual practice field to improve attack practice. This robot performs high speed movement on 9 m rails that are arranged in parallel with the volleyball net. In addition, an application with a graphical user interface to enable a coach to manipulate these robots was developed. It enables the coach to control block motions and change the parameters such as the robots' positions and operation timing. Through practical use in the practice field, the effectiveness of this system was confirmed. In this paper, we describe the effectiveness to players through utilization of the system in actual practice. In addition, we clarify the improvement points exposed at that time, propose and construct a sensor system and describe its evaluation and future possibilities.

The “Big Robot” has two legs with wheels, mounting the pilot at 5m height position. The robot goes forward according with the motion of the feet of the pilot. It is programed to make trajectory of head position of 5m giant. Thus, the pilot feels as if his/her body were extended to 5m giant. The biggest technical issue in large-scale robot is falling down to the ground. Thus, the base frame of BigRobot is made of steel and its linkages are made of CFRP. This structure enables low center of gravity and prevents from falling down. The Big Robot was exhibited at Ars Electronica Festival 2015, Tsukuba Media Art Festival 2015 and Emerging Technologies of SIGGRAPH 2016, that proved its effectiveness.

We here propose a device that can display a translational force and torque using two vibration speakers. Each vibration speaker generates an asymmetric vibration when a sound with an asymmetric amplitude is input. Asymmetric vibrations induce perceived forces that pull or push a user's hand in a particular direction. The user perceives a translational force and/or torque with his/her thumb and index finger based on the direction and amplitude of each speaker's force. We conducted four evaluation experiments to evaluate the mechanical properties and the proprioceptive sensations. As result, we confirmed that the proposed device can present the translational force with a maximum value of 0.5 N and the torque with a maximum value of 9.5 N·mm.

This paper describes development of a food simulator. A taste of food arises from mixture of auditory, chemical, and force sensation. This food simulator is a haptic interface that can generate a force to user's teeth when the user bites a food. It consists of a film-like force sensor and one degree-of-freedom manipulator. The food simulator generates a food texture according to the force profile captured from a user's biting force of a real food. Then the profile of the biting force is replayed by controlling the reaction force of the device.

We developed a spherical immersive projection display, a new model of EV(EnspheredVision). This display consists of spherical screen, plane mirror, convex mirror, six projectors and mechanical shutter. Multiple projector enables to improve the image resolution and brightness as compared with the former EV. Observer can watch the 360 degree panoramic stereo image using liquid crystal shutter glasses.

Robot Tile is one of the circulating field types of Locomotion interface which consists of five Omni-directional moveable robots. The user can keep walking in any direction with this device while it is in the place. An immersive projection display named the Rear Dome consists of a spherical rear projection screen and eight projectors. The Rear Dome can project omnidirectional images on the screen. A user can see the omnidirectional image inside the screen. We integrated the Robot Tile and the Rear Dome, and conducted the evaluation experiment.

This paper presents a work carried out for a project to develop a new interactive technique that combines haptic sensation with computer graphics. The project has two goals. The first one is to provide users with a spatially continuous surface on which they can effectively touch an image using any part of their bare hand, including the palm. The second is to present visual and haptic sensation simultaneously by using a single device that doesn't oblige the users to wear any equipment. In order to achieve these goals, we have developed balloon array volumetric haptic display named Volflex. The Volflex, however, has small range of displayed volume. In this paper, we focus on expanding the ability to present varied shape of virtual object from flat surface to volumetric surface. We designed a new volumetric haptic display named Volflex+. It is composed of a group of air balloons controlled by air cylinders. Each air cylinder is attached to a linear actuator so that each balloon is able to move up/down.
