Conventional stereoscopic displays have inconsistent accommodation against convergance, which dengrades sensation of presence. We developed a stereoscopic display applying Maxwellian optics to avoid such inconsistency by realizing large depth of focus. The display was also designed to provide large field of view (about 110 degree) with the simple optics. And this display allows an operator to observe real and virtual images in focus for wide range of depth.

Recently, virtual reality technology has been used in numerous practical applications. In this paper, we developed and evaluated a proto-type system of educational VR system by using networked VR technology. To build proto-type systems, we constructed high quality historical VR contents, Copan ruins of Mayan civilization, and integrate two different types of VR systems, theater-type and home-type VR systems. By using VR Theater, a teacher can give lecture on Mayan civilization to his students as if they are in the real Copan ruins. Also, we divide students into four groups and inspect the effect of mutual observation to group stydy. In proto-type system, each group walk through Copan ruins by using home-type VR systems set up in front of the VR theater, and solve historical questions about Mayan civilization. Throughout the experiments, almost all students are interested in Mayan civilization and communicate each other in both real and VR environments.

The "SpinDome" is an image display using wide-angle spherical screen. Sphere is an ideal shape of a screen that covers human visual field. The optical system of the SpinDome employs two mirrors: a flat mirror and a spherical convex mirror. The flat mirror bends the light so that the viewer can see the image from the center of the spherical screen. This optical configuration enables seamless wide-angle image in a very limited space. A rotary mechanical shutter is set in front of the projectors, which provides stereoscopic image. Effectiveness of the display is exemplified by maneuvering a remote vehicle.

This paper proposes a system to produce 3D computer animation based on the human performance from video image sequences. This system uses a 3D model of the human body for motion capturing as well as generating CG images. In fact, a human action is observed by video cameras allocated around the actor. Fitting the 3D human model to the human images, the human action are measured as series of 3D pose of human body. This method needs not to attach any equipment and marker to the human body. We have made a database of various kinds of human actions. An action required in a story-telling can be generated by warp and combination of actions from the database. We produced an animation video originated from a fairy tail in the selection of Grimm brothers by this animation system.

This paper proposes "Remote Shared Mixed-Reality" that enables multiple users in distant places to share a same Mixed-Reality space. In this paper, we propose a novel face-to-face tabletop type remote collaboration system to share the same tabletop MR space by two users sitting in distant places. In order to realize the system, the system has to execute the all processes, capturing, sending, and rendering the appearance of users, real/virtual objects in real time.

This paper describes development of a food simulator. A taste of food arises from mixture of auditory, chemical, and force sensation. This food simulator is a haptic interface that can generate a force to user's teeth when the user bites a food. It consists of a film-like force sensor and one degree-of-freedom manipulator. The food simulator generates a food texture according to the force profile captured from a user's biting force of a real food. Then the profile of the biting force is replayed by controlling the reaction force of the device.

We developed a spherical immersive projection display, a new model of EV(EnspheredVision). This display consists of spherical screen, plane mirror, convex mirror, six projectors and mechanical shutter. Multiple projector enables to improve the image resolution and brightness as compared with the former EV. Observer can watch the 360 degree panoramic stereo image using liquid crystal shutter glasses.

Robot Tile is one of the circulating field types of Locomotion interface which consists of five Omni-directional moveable robots. The user can keep walking in any direction with this device while it is in the place. An immersive projection display named the Rear Dome consists of a spherical rear projection screen and eight projectors. The Rear Dome can project omnidirectional images on the screen. A user can see the omnidirectional image inside the screen. We integrated the Robot Tile and the Rear Dome, and conducted the evaluation experiment.

This paper presents a work carried out for a project to develop a new interactive technique that combines haptic sensation with computer graphics. The project has two goals. The first one is to provide users with a spatially continuous surface on which they can effectively touch an image using any part of their bare hand, including the palm. The second is to present visual and haptic sensation simultaneously by using a single device that doesn't oblige the users to wear any equipment. In order to achieve these goals, we have developed balloon array volumetric haptic display named Volflex. The Volflex, however, has small range of displayed volume. In this paper, we focus on expanding the ability to present varied shape of virtual object from flat surface to volumetric surface. We designed a new volumetric haptic display named Volflex+. It is composed of a group of air balloons controlled by air cylinders. Each air cylinder is attached to a linear actuator so that each balloon is able to move up/down. This configuration drastically expands presented volume..

In counseling, the role of non-verbal communication such as expression, spacing, physical contact is very important. Roleplaying is one of useful methods of counseling. According to circumstances, physical contact is used in order to that roleplaying may be more effective. When counselors want to use physical contact in counseling, they can use a virtual contact instead of physical one without ethical problems. Therefore, we propose Remote Counseling system with virtual embrace using HyperMirror.
