We present an unquenched lattice calculation for the B0-B̅ 0 transition amplitude. The calculation, carried out at an inverse lattice spacing 1/a=2.22(4)  GeV, incorporates two flavors of dynamical quarks described by the O(a)-improved Wilson fermion action and heavy quarks described by nonrelativistic QCD. Particular attention is paid to the uncertainty that arises from the chiral extrapolation, especially the effect of pion loops, for light quarks, which we find could be sizable for the leptonic decay constant, whereas it is small for the B parameters. We obtain fBd=191(10)(-22+12)   MeV, fBs/fBd=1.13(3)(-2+13), BBd(mb)=0.836(27)(-62+56), BBs/BBd=1.017(16)(-17+56), and ξ=1.14(3)(-2+13), where the first error is statistical, and the second is systematic, including uncertainties due to chiral extrapolation, finite lattice spacing, heavy quark expansion, and perturbative operator matching.

The response of a mesoscopic superconducting disk to perpendicular magnetic fields is studied by using the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method, in which transport properties of several small tunnel junctions attached to the disk are measured simultaneously. This allows us to make the first experimental distinction between the giant vortex states and multivortex states. Moreover, we experimentally find a magnetic-field induced rearrangement and combination of vortices. The experimental results are well reproduced in numerical results based on the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory.

The metastability of vacancies was theoretically predicted for several compound semiconductors alongside their transformation into the antisite-vacancy pair counterpart; however, no experiment to date has unambiguously confirmed the existence of antisite-vacancy pairs. Using electron paramagnetic resonance and first principles calculations we identify the SI5 center as the carbon antisite-vacancy pair in the negative charge state (CSiV<sub>C</sub><sup>-</sup>) in 4H-SiC. We suggest that this defect is a strong carrier-compensating center in n-type or high-purity semi-insulating SiC.

A comprehensive microscopic dynamical theory is presented for the description of quantum fluids as they transform into glasses. The theory is based on a quantum extension of mode-coupling theory. Novel effects are predicted, such as reentrant behavior of dynamical relaxation times. These predictions are supported by path integral ring polymer molecular dynamics simulations. The simulations provide detailed insight into the factors that govern slow dynamics in glassy quantum fluids. Connection to other recent work on both quantum glasses as well as quantum optimization problems is presented.

The angular dependence of the radiation-zone output power and electric polarization of stimulated terahertz amplified radiation (STAR) emitted from a dc voltage applied across cylindrical and rectangular stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions is calculated. The boundary conditions are obtained from Love's equivalence principles. During coherent emission, a spatially uniform ac Josephson current density in the stack acts as a surface electric current density antenna source, leading to a harmonic radiation frequency spectrum, as in experiment, but absent in all cavity models of cylindrical mesas. Spatial fluctuations of the ac Josephson current allow its fundamental mode to lock onto the lowest finite energy cylindrical cavity mode, causing it to resonate, leading to a non-uniform magnetic surface current density radiation source, and a non-trivial combined fundamental frequency output power with linear polarization for general radiation directions, which may be fully or partially coherent. The higher ac Josephson harmonics do not excite other cylindrical cavity modes. For rectangular mesas, the lowest energy modes are empirically not excited, but the non-uniform ac Josephson current can excite the harmonic sequence of modes with spatial variation across the rectangular widths, leading to combined radiation outputs both for the fundamental and the higher harmonics, which combinations also may be either fully or partially coherent. The superconducting substrate is modeled as a perfect magnetic conductor, greatly reducing the STAR emitter power and modifying its angular dependence, especially parallel to the substrate. Based upon this substrate model, existing Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 + δ crystals atop perfect electric conductors could have STAR emitter power in excess of 5 mW, acceptable for many device applications.

The behavior of longitudinal acoustic (LA) and transverse acoustic (TA) phonons in a cubic relaxor PbMg1/3Ta2/3O3 (PMT) ferroelectric has been investigated by Brillouin light scattering. Analysis of the temperature dependences of phonon velocity in the temperature range from 50 to 870 K has revealed anomalies in the vicinity of the Burns temperature (TB≈570 K) for LA phonons and a wide frequency-dependent minimum of the velocities of LA and TA phonons in the same temperature region as the dielectric response anomaly. Using experimental data, temperature dependences of the C11 and C44 elastic constants have been calculated. The elastic constants have been found to be frequency-independent in the gigahertz range. The results obtained are discussed in the framework of modern ideas on the crystalline lattice dynamics of relaxor ferroelectrics.

The authors report the results of temperature-dependent Brillouin scattering from both transverse and longitudinal acoustic waves, heat capacity studies as well as room temperature Raman scattering studies on M2O–MgO–WO3–P2O5 glasses (M=K,Rb). These results were used to obtain information about structure and various properties of the studied glasses such as fragility, elastic moduli, ratio of photoelastic constants, and elastic anharmonicity. They have found that both glasses have similar properties but replacement of K+ ions by Rb+ ions in the glass network leads to decrease of elastic parameters and P44 photoelastic constant due to increase of fragility. Based on Brillouin spectroscopy they show that a linear correlation between longitudinal and shear elastic moduli holds over a large temperature range. This result supports the literature data that the Cauchy-type relation represents a general rule for amorphous solids. An analysis of the Boson peak revealed that the form of the frequency distribution of the excess density of states is in agreement with the Euclidean random matrix theory. The reason of the observed shift of the maximum frequency of the Boson peak when K+ ions are substituted for Rb+ ions is also briefly discussed.

The Cu-dependent phase transition in polycrystalline CuGaSe2 thin films has been studied by an electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) and the synchrotron x-ray diffraction method. A Cu-deficiency parameter, Z, defined as (1 − Cu/Ga) was used to study the phase transition. Upon increasing the Z-value, the composition of the films on the Cu2Se-Ga2Se3 pseudo binary tie line was found to shift from the stoichiometric CuGaSe2 (1:1:2) (Z = 0) to the Ga-rich composition through the formation of several ordered defect compounds.The structural modification in the Cu-poor CuGaSe2 film has been investigated by the synchrotron x-ray diffraction method. The existence of the Cu-poor surface phase over the near-stoichiometric bulk CuGaSe2 film was confirmed by the fitting of the accelerated voltage dependent EPMA data.

The paper studies the circularly polarized photoluminescence (PL) from dilute GaAsN alloys with nitrogen content of 1%–3.4%, grown on GaAs substrates. The room-temperature PL is found to consist of two bands whose splitting grows with increasing nitrogen content. The analysis of the PL circular polarization has shown that the PL bands originate from the splitting of light- and heavy-hole subbands, induced by an elastic strain in GaAsN layer. The dependence of the energy gap of unstrained GaAsN on the nitrogen content has been calculated using the measured light- and heavy-hole splittings.

A relationship between intra-4f transitions of Er and vacancy-type defects in Er-doped GaN was studied by using a monoenergetic positron beam. Doppler broadening spectra of the annihilation radiation were measured for Er-doped GaN grown by molecular beam epitaxy. A clear correlation between the defect concentration and the photoluminescence (PL) intensity was observed. The major defect species detected by positrons was identified as a Ga vacancy VGa, and its concentration increased with increasing Er concentration [Er]. For the sample with [Er]=3.3 at. %, the maximum integrated intensity of PL was observed. The VGa concentration was above 1018 cm−3 and additional vacancies such as divacancies started to be introduced at this Er concentration. For the sample with higher [Er], the PL intensity decreased, and the mean size of vacancies decreased due to an introduction of precipitates and/or metastable phases.

We have measured the response of an array of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta intrinsic Josephson junctions to irradiation at 3 GHz. By measuring the dependence of the switching current upon the radio-frequency current for five of the junctions in the array we show quantitatively that the junctions have identical impedances at 3 GHz, this impedance being given by the inverse of the slope of the current-voltage characteristics.

The spin polarization of (100)-oriented gamma[prime]-Fe4N layers grown on MgO(001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy was deduced from point contact Andreev reflection measurements, and the value was compared with that of alpha-Fe. The spin polarization (P) for gamma[prime]-Fe4N is approximately 0.59 at 7.8 K. This value is distinctly larger than that for alpha-Fe (P=0.49 at 7.8 K) measured with an identical setting. The mechanism of enhanced spin polarization in gamma[prime]-Fe4N is discussed.

The dynamic polar nanoregions (PNRs) which form below the Burns temperature and determine the unique properties of relaxor ferroelectrics were predicted [Tinte et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 137601 (2006)] to be pinned to the quenched chemically ordered regions (CORs) usually observed in lead-containing relaxors. In Pb[(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.45Ti0.55]O3 crystal where CORs are known to be absent, we have found the phenomena typically related to the relaxation of dynamic PNRs, namely, the significant Brillouin quasielastic scattering, the softening of the longitudinal acoustic mode, and the deviation from the Curie-Weiss law above the Curie point. This implies that PNRs may appear in crystals without CORs.

A photoexcitation is one of the promising external fields to control the material phases. Here, the authors have demonstrated that the magnetic and structural properties of a spin-crossover complex, Fe(phen)2(NCS)2 (phen=1,10-phenanthroline), can be reversibly switched by the on-off action of the continuous photoexcitation at the same temperature. The structural data suggest that the density of the high-spin Fe2+ in the photoinduced phase is about 0.88. Suppressed atomic vibrations of the photoinduced phase exclude the conventional heating effect as the origin for the observed optical switching.

Within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the timeevolution of an energetic R-current propagating through a finite temperature, stronglycoupled, N = 4 SYM plasma and propose a physical picture for our results. In thispicture, the current splits into a pair of massless partons, which then evolve via successivebranchings, in such a way that energy is quasi-democratically divided among the productsof a branching. We point out a duality between the transverse size of the partonic systemproduced through branching and the radial distance traveled by the dual Maxwell wave inthe AdS geometry. For a time-like current, the branching occurs already in the vacuum,where it gives rise to a system of low-momentum partons isotropically distributed in thetransverse plane. But at finite temperature, the branching mechanism is modified by themedium, in that the rate for parton splitting is enhanced by the transfer of transversemomentum from the partons to the plasma. This mechanism, which controls the partonenergy loss, is sensitive to the energy density in the plasma, but not to the details of thethermal state. We compute the lifetime of the current for various kinematical regimes andprovide physical interpretations for other, related, quantities, so like the meson screeninglength, the drag force, or the trailing string, that were previously computed via AdS/CFTtechniques.

We show that a source which radiates in the vacuum of the strongly coupled N = 4=4 SYM theory produces an energy distribution which, in the supergravity approximation, has the same space-time pattern as the corresponding classical distribution: the radiation propagates at the speed of light without broadening. We illustrate this on the basis of several examples: a small perturbation propagating down a steady string, a massless particle falling into AdS5, and the decay of a time-like wave-packet. A similar observation was made in Phys. Rev. D81 (2010) 126001 for the case of a rotating string. In all these cases, the absence of broadening is related to the fact that the energy backreaction on the boundary arises exclusively from the bulk perturbation at, or near, the boundary. This is so since bulk sources which propagate in AdS5 at the speed of light do not generate any energy on the boundary. We interpret these features as an artifact of the supergravity approximation, which fails to encode quantum mechanical fluctuations that should be present even in the strong coupling limit. We argue that such fluctuations should enter the dual string theory as longitudinal string fluctuations, which are not suppressed at strong coupling. We heuristically estimate the effects of such fluctuations and argue that they restore the broadening of the radiation, in agreement with expectations from both quantum mechanics and the ultraviolet/infrared correspondence.

A new method for determining the electron density of a thin plasma by means of Fabry-Pérot interferometry is proposed. The interferometer consists of two plasma layers and dielectric material surrounded by two plasma layers. The transmittance of electromagnetic waves across the interferometer is calculated, and Fabry-Pérot resonances are demonstrated. It is shown that the electron density can be determined from the measurement of the Fabry-Pérot resonance frequencies. This method can also be applied to the measurement of conduction electron density in semiconductor films.

In strongly anisotropic layered superconductors in tilted magnetic fields, the Josephson vortex lattice coexists with the lattice of pancake vortices. Due to the interaction between them, the dissipation of the Josephson vortex lattice is very sensitive to the presence of the pancake vortices. If the c-axis magnetic field is smaller than the corresponding lower critical field, the pancake stacks are not formed but the individual pancakes may exist in the fluctuational regime either near the surface in large-size samples or in the central region for small-size mesas. We calculate the contribution of such fluctuating pancake vortices to the c-axis conductivity of the Josephson vortex lattice and compare the theoretical results with measurements on small mesas fabricated out of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ crystals. A fingerprint of fluctuating pancakes is a characteristic exponential dependence of the c-axis conductivity observed experimentally. Our results provide strong evidence of the existence of the fluctuating pancakes and their influence on the Josephson vortex lattice dissipation.
