Tramadol is an atypical opioid analgesic widely used in small animal practice. This study was designed to determine the effect of a single intravenous (IV) dose of tramadol on the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of sevoflurane in dogs. Six beagle dogs were anesthetized twice to determine the sevoflurane MAC with or without an administration of tramadol (4 mg/kg, IV) at 7 days interval. The sevoflurane MAC was determined using a tail clamp method in each dog ventilated with positive pressure ventilation. The tramadol administration produced a significant reduction in the sevoflurane MAC by 22.3 ± 12.2% (1.44 ± 0.28% with tramadol versus 1.86 ± 0.30% without tramadol, P=0.010). This MAC reduction had been determined from 122 ± 19 to 180 ± 41 min following the tramadol administration. During this period, the plasma concentrations of tramadol and its metabolite, O-desmethyltramadol (M1), decreased from 429 ± 64 to 332 ± 55 ng/ml and from 136 ± 24 to 114 ± 68 ng/ml, respectively, but these changes were not statistically significant. There was no significant difference in heart rate, mean arterial blood pressure and SpO2 between the control and tramadol treatment. The dogs that received tramadol treatment sometimes breathed spontaneously. Therefore, their respiratory rates significantly increased, and PETCO2 decreased during the MAC determination. In conclusion, the single IV dose of tramadol produced a significant reduction in the sevoflurane MAC in dogs.

Increasing attention is being paid to the possibility of applying cancer chemopreventive agents for individuals at high risk of neoplastic development. For this purpose by natural compounds have practical advantages with regard to availability, suitability for oral application, regulatory approval and mechanisms of action. Candidate substances such as phytochemicals present in foods and their derivatives have been identified by a combination of epidemiological and experimental studies. Plant constituents include vitamin derivatives, phenolic and flavonoid agents, organic sulfur compounds, isothiocyanates, curcumins, fatty acids and d-limonene. Examples of compounds from animals are unsaturated fatty acids and lactoferrin. Recent studies have indicated that mechanisms underlying chemopreventive potential may be combinations of anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, immune-enhancing, and anti-hormone effects, with modification of drug-metabolizing enzymes, influence on the cell cycle and cell differentiation, induction of apoptosis and suppression of proliferation and angiogenesis playing roles in the initiation and secondary modification stages of neoplastic development. Accordingly, natural agents are advantageous for application to humans because of their combined mild mechanism. Here we review naturally occurring compounds useful for cancer chemprevention based on in vivo studies with reference to their structures, sources and mechanisms of action.

ミズキ科サンシュユの新鮮葉から精製エラジタンニン標品を得た.線虫Caenorhabditis elegansを同調培養した.未成熟成虫と抱卵成虫をこのタンニン(10 ppm濃度)に5日間暴露しても運動能に若干の低下が認められたものの, 未成熟成虫は死亡せず, 抱卵成虫の死亡率も7%に過ぎなかった.しかし, 未成熟成虫の性的成熟および抱卵成虫の繁殖能は阻害された.L1幼虫の運動能も低下しなかったが, その成長は阻害された.同濃度下でさらに暴露試験を続けると, 抱卵成虫と未成熟成虫の死亡率は急激に高まり, 10日目で未成熟成虫の死亡率は56%, 抱卵成虫で78%に達した.しかし, L1幼虫は死亡しなかった.1 ppm濃度下でL1幼虫の成長が若干阻害された.1000 ppm濃度下でなお生存していた抱卵成虫の内臓は溶解・消失していた.しかし, 体内での卵割は認められた.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:Although high or low (no) meat consumption was associated with elevated or reduced mortality from cardiovascular disease, respectively, few studies have investigated the association between moderate meat consumption and cardiovascular disease. We aimed to evaluate the associations between moderate meat consumption and cardiovascular disease mortality.SUBJECTS/METHODS:We conducted a prospective cohort study of 51,683 Japanese (20,466 men and 31,217 women) aged 40-79 years living in all of Japan (The Japan Collaborative Cohort Study; JACC Study). Consumptions of meat (beef, pork, poultry, liver and processed meat) were assessed via a food frequency questionnaire administrated at baseline survey. Hazard ratios (HRs) of mortality from cardiovascular disease were estimated from Cox proportional hazards regression models according to quintiles of meat consumption after adjustment for potential confounding variables.RESULTS:During 820,076 person-years of follow-up, we documented 2685 deaths due to total cardiovascular disease including 537 ischemic heart diseases and 1209 strokes. The multivariable HRs (95% confidence interval) for the highest versus lowest quintiles of meat consumption (77.6 versus 10.4 g/day) among men were 0.66 (0.45-0.97) for ischemic heart disease, 1.10 (0.84-1.43) for stroke and 1.00 (0.84-1.20) for total cardiovascular disease. The corresponding HRs (59.9 versus 7.5 g/day) among women were 1.22 (0.81-1.83), 0.91 (0.70-1.19) and 1.07 (0.90-1.28). The associations were similar when the consumptions of red meat, poultry, processed meat and liver were examined separately.CONCLUSION:Moderate meat consumption, up to ~100 g/day, was not associated with increased mortality from ischemic heart disease, stroke or total cardiovascular disease among either gender.

東アジアには翅斑の特徴同様♂交尾器のよく分化したベニヒカゲ属のふたつの近縁種が分布していることが明らかになった.それらはクモマベニヒカゲErebia ligea(Linnaeus,1758)およびもう一つは同所的な種で,後者は古くErebia ajanensis Menetries,1857の名称をもち,本報では次の3亜種に区分した.1.原名亜種E.ajanensis ajanensis Menetries,1857ロシア,ハバロフスク州のオホーツク海沿岸地方に知られる.かつてはE.ligeaの亜種に位置付けられていた.今回,ロシア科学アカデミー動物学研究所(セント・ペテルスブルク)に保管されていた標本を後模式に指定して,標記の名称と均質群の地理的範囲を確定させた.2.亜種E.ajanensis kosterini P.Gorbunov,Korshunov et Dubatolov,1995ロシア,マガダン州南部に分布する.本集団は先にP.Gorbunov他(1995)で"Erebia kosterini"として新種として発表したものである.3.亜種E.ajanensis arsenjevi Kurentzov,1950ロシア極東地区南部,朝鮮,中国北部および東北部?に知られる.この集団もE.ligeaの亜種とされ,Kurentzov(1970)では独立種として扱われながらも,名称のつづりが誤っていた.本報でこの名称を担う後模式指定(ロシア科学アカデミー極東支部土壌生物学研究所)をして,地域集団を確定させた.上記3つの集団に対する名称群は,いずれも今回初めての昇降格,[種との]結合がなされた.また,それらの集団は広義の日本列島(サハリンを含む)の集団とは関連がない.一方,従来のE.ligeaについても検討し,本報においてE.ligea koreana Matsumura,1928およびE.eumonia Menetries,1859のそれぞれの後模式を指定した.後模式標本の指定後,名称eumoniaはE.ligeaの最も古い東方亜種名として活用できることとなり,北部を除くアルタイ山脈からマガダン州および朝鮮に分布する真のクモマベニヒカゲに適用した.この広大な地域から記載されたE.ligeaと想定される群は,E.ligea sachalinensis Matsumura,1919,E.ligea rishirizana Matsumura,1928およびE.ligea takanonis Matsumura,1909を除き,すべてE.ligea eumoniaの異名と考えられる.

8頭のアンダルシア馬 (3〜4年齢) の適性が分析された. 動物は砂質の走路で種々の2段階からなる運動テストに供した. 第1段階は4スピード (4.17, 5.56, 6.96, 8.33m/sec) を段階的に増加させ, 各々の速さで, 1,000mの距離を最大下強度で走行させた. 動物は, 4スピードの間毎に2分休ませた. 第2段階は最大相の終了2分後, 1,000mを最大スピード走行させた. 心拍数, 血漿乳酸濃度, 速度, 血液のPCV, とpHのデータを得た. 最大心拍数, 最大速度, 乳酸濃度, 乳酸のピーク値, 最小pHと最大PCVは機能的指標として評価された. 馬を分別することを可能にする重要な要素はこれらの適性値と馬を管理するトレーナの情報と関連させることである. 馬を分別するために変動する最高の弁別手段は最小pH, 乳酸濃度, 最大心拍数, と最大速度であった. 最大PCVとの関連において, 8頭の馬に差は認められなかった. 運動耐性テストにおけるこれらの機能的指標の各々の影響が議論された.

The goal of this study was to prove the possibility of using silicone stents broadly used for human medicine in canine obstructive tracheal disease. A silicone stent anatomically designed for canine trachea was tested on 5 beagle dogs for 8 weeks. The stent was carefully inserted using a newly developed delivery device under fluoroscopic guidance. There were no technical difficulties in placing the stent during the procedure. Previously reported complications of airway stenting such as stent migration or granulation tissue formation did not occur in any of the cases. In addition, removal of the stent was as simple as inserting it, and complications were absent. The stent introduced in this study could possibly be applied to various canine obstructive tracheal diseases.
