本研究は、「超高エネルギニュートリノ天文学」という現在、存在していない研究分野を創出するための様々な基礎的な研究を試みるものである。「超高エネルギーニュートリノ天文学」の最大の特徴は、「光では原理的見ることの出来ない宇宙」を「ニュートリノで観測する」というところにある。それを可能するような必要な様々な基礎研究を行うのが本研究の目的である。まず、「超高エネルギーニュートリノ」を検出するには、「低エネルギーニュートリノ」の研究であるスーパーカミオカンデで用いられている通常の光電子増倍管では不可能である。これに代わる高性能半導体光検出器の開発が不可欠である。このため、現在、「ローカルフィードバック型素子」と「超格子型素子」の開発研究を行っている(論文番号14)。超高エネルギーニュートリノ反応は、超高エネルギーエレクトロン、超高エネルギーミューオンからのチェレンコフ光の測定を行うことによって検出される。そのためには、超高エネルギーエレクトロンの様々な状況における振る舞いが問題となる。このような観点から、プラズマ状態での挙動(論文番号1)、強磁場での挙動(論文番号3)、LPM効果の検討(論文番号8、9)の研究を行った。超高エネルギーミューオンに関しては、重原子核の制動輻射に対する影響(論文番号4)、LPM効果の影響(論文番号13)、ミューオンの輸送過程の研究(論文番号11)、を行った。雑音としての大気ミューオンの研究(論文番号13)、また、これらのニュートリノの検出には、チェレンコフ輻射の時間-空間分布の知識(論文番号10)、の研究が必要である。一方、「超高エネルギー・ニュートリノ」に対する理解のためには、それよりエネルギーの低い「高エネルギーニュートリノ」に対する実験的理解が必須であり、これに対する研究がバイカル湖で行われた(論文番号5、6、7)。以上で、「基礎研究」の第一段階が終了したと考える。

Tramadol is an atypical opioid analgesic widely used in small animal practice. This study was designed to determine the effect of a single intravenous (IV) dose of tramadol on the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of sevoflurane in dogs. Six beagle dogs were anesthetized twice to determine the sevoflurane MAC with or without an administration of tramadol (4 mg/kg, IV) at 7 days interval. The sevoflurane MAC was determined using a tail clamp method in each dog ventilated with positive pressure ventilation. The tramadol administration produced a significant reduction in the sevoflurane MAC by 22.3 ± 12.2% (1.44 ± 0.28% with tramadol versus 1.86 ± 0.30% without tramadol, P=0.010). This MAC reduction had been determined from 122 ± 19 to 180 ± 41 min following the tramadol administration. During this period, the plasma concentrations of tramadol and its metabolite, O-desmethyltramadol (M1), decreased from 429 ± 64 to 332 ± 55 ng/ml and from 136 ± 24 to 114 ± 68 ng/ml, respectively, but these changes were not statistically significant. There was no significant difference in heart rate, mean arterial blood pressure and SpO2 between the control and tramadol treatment. The dogs that received tramadol treatment sometimes breathed spontaneously. Therefore, their respiratory rates significantly increased, and PETCO2 decreased during the MAC determination. In conclusion, the single IV dose of tramadol produced a significant reduction in the sevoflurane MAC in dogs.

Stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) made from high-temperature superconductors such as Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi-2212) (BSCCO) are a promising source of coherent continuous-wave terahertz radiation. It is thought that at electrical bias conditions under which THz-emission occurs, hot spots may form due to resistive self-heating, and that these spots may be highly beneficial for the generation of high levels of THz power. Here, we perform an imaging study of the temperature distribution at the surface of BSCCO stacks utilizing the temperature-dependent 612 nm fluorescence line of Eu3+ in a europium chelate. The images directly reveal a highly non-uniform temperature distribution in which the temperature in the middle of the stack can exceed the superconducting transition temperature by tens of Kelvin under biasing conditions typical for THz-emission.

Angiogenesis, in particular anti-angiogenesis, is an area of particular therapeutic interest in cancer treatment. Several anti-angiogenic agents are in the final stages of clinical trials. One of these agents, thalidomide, best known for its teratogenic potential, is showing promise against several tumor types. Thalidomide has been shown previously to require bio-activation to exert its anti-angiogenic effect in isolated blood vessels and endothelial cells. In this work, we confirmed these findings using the in utero chicken embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) system. In particular, the anti-angiogenic effect of thalidomide is significantly enhanced by activation by human but not by rat liver microsomes. We also showed in the CAM assay that hydroxylation of thalidomide at either the 1′- or 5-position retained anti-angiogenic activity whereas its hydroxylation at the 4-position led to an inactive compound. We further demonstrated that thalidomide shows weak anti-proliferative activity against MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells in culture. Thalidomide showed slightly more anti-proliferative activity, however, against the SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma and human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) types. Furthermore, incubation of thalidomide with human liver microsomes added no additional anti-proliferative effect in these cell types versus thalidomide given alone. Finally, we report that none of the thalidomide metabolites tested had any anti-proliferative effect against the breast or neuroblastoma cells, but do possess appreciable anti-proliferative activity against the endothelial cells. In summary, this work suggests that hydroxylated thalidomide analogs based on putative metabolites of the drug possess significant anti-angiogenic activity and that exploring further derivatives of these as potential anti-angiogenic agents warrants further merit.

We examined the geographic variation of <i>Tokudaia osimensis</i> through the analysis of mitochondria1 cytochrome <i>b</i> (cyt <i>b</i>) gene sequences and the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) in the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA), using samples collected from Tokuno-shima and Amami-oshima in the Ryukyu Islands. The two populations show intrinsic karyological variation (Tokuno-shima, 2n=45; Amami-oshima, 2n=25). Sequences of the cyt <i>b</i> gene differed considerably between the two island populations. The extent of the sequence divergence among 1,140 bp of the gene was calculated to be 0.088 using the Kimura two parameter method, and was comparable to those between related species of rodents such as within genus <i>Mus</i> or <i>Rattus</i>. The extent of the differentiation in the rDNA-RFLP was also high. Three out of 22 restriction site variants were found to be fixed in the nuclear rDNA arrays of hundreds of copies in either one of the two island populations. These intensive inter-populational differences indicate that the two island populations may have been isolated for a considerable period of evolutionary time, probably several millions of years, despite there having been several opportunities for renewed genetic contact during the Pleistocene ice ages. Our data strongly suggest that the current taxonomic status of the populations of the two islands, Amami-oshima and Tokuno-shima, which regards them conspecific, should be reviewed.

In this paper we discuss environmental changes along the coastal line of Nigeria, especially in the region around Lagos, based on provisional multi-disciplinary analyses of meteorological and maritime observations. This study has revealed that recent environmental change in the Nigerian coastal region has been much more apparent than that of a few years back (1989-2007). Various kinds of ocean debris, transported mainly by coastal wind, are severely affecting the marine and coastal environment. Because the current ocean monitoring system has been found to be troubled by ocean debris, establishing a new system to obtain reliable observational data to monitor and preserve the environment of the coastal region is urgent.

We study branched Galois coverings of the projective plane by smooth K3 surfaces. Branching data of such a covering determines in a unique way a uniformizable orbifold on the plane. In order to study Galois coverings of the plane by K3 surfaces, it suffices to study orbifolds on the plane uniformized by K3 surfaces. We call these K3 orbifolds and classify K3 orbifolds with an abelian uniformization. We also classify K3 orbifolds with a locus of degree less than 6 and with a non-abelian uniformization. There are no K3 orbifolds with a locus of degree greater than 6. Although we give some examples of K3 orbifolds with a sextic locus, our results are incomplete in this case.
