The Cloud Resolving Storm Simulator (CReSS) model with default parameter settings largely underestimates the diurnal variation of land surface temperature (LST) and hence the formation of summertime diurnal convective clouds over the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which are the primary target of cloud seeding in the UAE. Based on sensitivity experiment results, we optimized a set of land surface parameters to minimize the underestimation of LST and improve the performance of weather simulations over deserts and mountains in the UAE. In the optimized experiment, the difference in LST between Aqua/MODIS observations and CReSS simulation results decreased from 13.0 to 2.3 K under daytime conditions, mainly due to decreased evapotranspiration efficiency and soil thermal diffusivity. Moreover, the difference decreased from 3.8 to 2.0 K under nighttime conditions, mainly due to decreased evapotranspiration efficiency and increased soil temperature at the deepest layer. A decrease in roughness length suppressed the increase in surface air temperature (SAT), contributing to the reproduction of a realistically large difference between LST and SAT during the daytime. The improvement in temperature matching demonstrates that the CReSS model, when used at a 1-km horizontal resolution, accurately simulates the formation of diurnal convective clouds and development of precipitation over deserts in the UAE and low mountains in northeastern UAE.

‘Miyagawa-wase’ (Citrus unshiu Marcow.), an early-season citrus variety, is rich in multiple nutrients and widely consumed in Japan. In ‘Miyagawa-wase’, when the pulp reaches maturity and is ready to eat, the peel is still a greenish color because of the relatively high temperature in the harvest season. In this study, to improve the coloration of ‘Miyagawa-wase’ peel, we treated the fruit with 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) after harvest. The results showed that postharvest treatment with NAA was effective to induce chlorophyll degradation and carotenoid accumulation in ‘Miyagawa-wase’ peel during storage. In the NAA treatment, the reduction in the chlorophyll contents after harvest was in parallel with decreases in the expression of chlorophyll biosynthetic genes (CitGGDR, CitCHLH, CitCHL27, CitPORA, and CitCAO) and an increase in chlorophyll degradation gene CitPPH. The contents of the major carotenoids, β-cryptoxanthin and 9-cis-violaxanthin, were increased by the NAA treatment through upregulation of the expression of carotenoid biosynthetic genes (CitPSY, CitPDS, CitZDS, CitLCYb2, and CitHYb) after harvest. In addition, it was found that the positive effect on degreening in the NAA treatment was inhibited by the ethylene antagonist 1-MCP. In the combination treatment using NAA and 1-MCP, the total chlorophyll content was much higher, while the contents of β-cryptoxanthin and 9-cis-violaxanthin were lower compared with NAA treatment alone, indicating that the acceleration of degreening by NAA may be caused by ethylene. The results presented in this study suggest that postharvest NAA treatment is an effective method for improving the peel coloration in early-season citrus varieties.

症例1は6歳女児.インフルエンザ感染症初日に発熱しオセルタミビルを開始.第3病日,右下腹部に限局した圧痛が出現.腹部造影CTで糞石を認め急性虫垂炎と診断.保存的に加療し炎症反応と腹痛は改善した.症例2は5歳女児.第1病日に発熱と腹痛を認め,第3病日に鼻咽腔迅速検査でインフルエンザB型と診断しザナミビル吸入を開始.触診で右下腹部に反跳痛を認め,腹部単純CTで虫垂壁の肥厚と糞石を確認.急性虫垂炎の併発と診断し,第4病日に虫垂切除術を施行.切除虫垂に膿瘍を認め腹腔ドレーンを留置.第5病日に解熱し経過は順調であった.インフルエンザに伴う腹痛では感染に付随する腹痛と断定せず急性虫垂炎の可能性も考慮し腹部CTなどの画像検査を行うことが肝要である.

A 65-year-old man who had undergone retropubic prostatectomy for prostate adenocarcinoma presented with sudden dyspnea and chest pain. Contrast-enhanced multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) revealed thrombi in the left internal jugular vein (IJV) and in branches of the right pulmonary artery. Ultrasonography showed that the thrombus which occluded the left IJV was hypoechoic and mobile. After beginning anticoagulant therapy, he again presented with dyspnea and transient hypotension. MSCT and ultrasonography showed that the IJV thrombus had moved and caused a new embolism of the left pulmonary artery branch. This is a rare case of a patient who experienced non-catheter-related thrombosis of the IJV.

To obtain the quantitative and qualitative data available for estimating the intake of carotenoids from fruits in Japan, carotenoids were analyzed with reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Ten carotenoids were examined in 75 raw fruits and 15 processed fruits, all of which were harvested or purchased in Japan. Phytoene was detected in 58 of 90 fruit samples ; ζ-carotene, in 50 of 90 ; lycopene, in 13 of 90 ; α-carotene, in 18 of 90 ; lutein, in 56 of 90 ; β-carotene, in 80 of 90 ; β-cryptoxanthin, in 68 of 90 ; zeaxanthin, in 58 of 90 ; all-trans-violaxanthin, in 55 of 90 ; and 9-cis-violaxanthin, in 47 of 90 samples. Citrus fruits of the mandarin type (Satsuma mandarin and its hybrids, such as tangor) were rich in β-cryptoxanthin, β-carotene, all-trans-violaxanthin, and 9-cis-violaxanthin ; ‘Star ruby’ grapefruit in lycopene ; loquat, Japanese persimmon, and peach in β-cryptoxanthin, β-carotene, all-trans-violaxanthin, and 9-cis-violaxanthin ; mango in β-carotene, all-trans-violaxanthin, and 9-cis-violaxanthin ; acerolas in phytoene ; passion fruits in ζ-carotene. Carotenoid levels in common fruits, such as apple, grape, lemon, pear, strawberry, kiwifruit, cherry, pineapple, and banana, were low.

Commelina communis f. ciliata (Commelinaceae), a newly distinguished taxon, is an annual andromonoecious herb exhibiting a mixed mating system, the details of which remain unclear. We developed microsatellite markers for use in exploring the evolution of andromonoecy and mixed mating in the species. Fifteen microsatellite loci were developed using next-generation sequencing. The primer sets were used to evaluate 65 C. communis f. ciliata individuals from three populations in Japan; we found 1–13 alleles per locus and the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.00 to 0.76. The markers are potentially useful to examine intra- and interspecies genetic structure and the mixed mating strategy of Commelina species via paternity analysis.

Carotenoids are isoprenoid pigments, which are widely distributed in nature. In fruits and flowers, carotenoids are responsible for bright yellow, orange, and red colors and provide a substrate to form flavor compounds, which attract pollinators and seed dispersers. In leaves, carotenoids play an essential role in photosynthesis. When carotenoids are ingested in the diet, they play a vital role in human nutrition and health as a precursor of vitamin A, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory agents. It is therefore important to control carotenoid accumulation to improve the commercial value of horticultural crops. Carotenoid accumulation is regulated by flux through the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway, and also by degradation and sequestration into plastids, which function as sink organelles. These processes are mostly controlled at the transcriptional levels of relevant genes. In this review, we summarize recent advances in studies on the molecular mechanisms that regulate carotenoid accumulation in vegetables, fruits, and ornamental flowers.

In satsuma mandarin fruit (Citrus unshiu Marc.), β-cryptoxanthin is a major carotenoid and an important quality component in the juice sacs. The stage of maturity and storage conditions of satsuma mandarin fruit shipped to markets varies. However, the effects of maturation stage, storage temperature and duration on changes in β-cryptoxanthin content have not been fully studied. In the present study, fruits were harvested at different maturation stages, and changes in β-cryptoxanthin content in the juice sacs were investigated during storage at temperatures from 5 to 20°C. At 20°C, in fruit harvested while β-cryptoxanthin is still being accumulated on the tree, the content continued to increase following 15 days of storage. However, in the fruit without β-cryptoxanthin accumulation on the tree, the content did not increase. At 10°C, in the fruit accumulating β-cryptoxanthin on the tree, the content continued to increase after 14 days’ storage, whereas in the fruit without β-cryptoxanthin accumulation, the content did not increase after 14 days’ storage but increased after 30 days’ storage. At 8°C, the increase in content was also observed in the fruit when stored for 80 days. In contrast, at 5°C, the content did not change notably at any maturation stage regardless of the experimental period. The changes in the carotenoid content and gene expression suggest that carotenoid accumulation during on-tree maturation continues after harvest at 20°C, but not at 5°C. The present results suggest that β-cryptoxanthin content will not decrease at a range from 5 to 20°C irrespective of the maturation stage. Moreover, at 8°C and above, the β-cryptoxanthin content will gradually increase, and the rate will be more rapid in fruit harvested when carotenoid accumulation is in progress on the tree.
