Evidence is emerging to indicate that atrial fibrillation (AF) is independently associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). This association has been consistently observed in specific patient subgroups such as patients with myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure, and hypertension, and importantly, in the general population. Data from studies of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator recipients suggest that the rapid and irregular rhythm of AF and the short-long-short cycles that are highly prevalent in AF increase susceptibility to ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. An alternative explanation for the association between AF and SCD includes confounding or mediation by shared risk factors such as coronary artery disease and heart failure. Possible risk factors for SCD in patients with AF include black race, left ventricular hypertrophy, history of MI, and diabetes. Additional research is needed to confirm the inherent proarrhythmic nature of AF, identify patients’ characteristics or clinical conditions that potentiate SCD risk, and define effective SCD prevention strategies for patients with AF.

野生および飼育下の個体群から集められた資料にもとづいて,スラウェシマカクの社会行動のレパートリーのエソグラムを作成した。コミュニケーションのパターン,動きのパターン,性行動のパターン,幼児行動と遊び,三者間の社会交渉など社会的文脈で観察されている行動を記述した。これらの行動パターンのほとんどはスラウェシマカクの全種に見られた。ある種の行動パターンの形態や機能はほかのマカク種で報告されているものと著しく異なっていたが,その一方,別の行動パターンに見られた類似性は,マカク属内の系統的な類縁関係を反映している可能性があった。

レプトスピラ症の感染成立から重症化(とくに黄疸発症)に至るまでの病態メカニズムについて次のような新知見が得られた。レプトスピラは、皮膚の角化層が失われると表皮細胞間(あるいは細胞内)を通過して皮下まで侵入し感染が成立する。感染初期は皮下脂肪組織の血管内に定着し増殖する。やがて増殖の場は肝臓が主体となる。肝臓のディッセ腔に達したレプトスピラは肝細胞間に侵入を始め、細胞間接着を剥がして毛細胆管の構築を破壊する。その結果胆汁排泄障害を来たし、黄疸が生ずる。したがって、血管内定着、肝細胞侵入の際の標的分子が明らかになれば、それらのアナログにより重症化への進展を阻止できることが期待できる。

Type III secretion system (T3SS) effector protein is a part of bacterial secretion systems. T3SS exists in the pathogenic and symbiotic bacteria. How the T3SS effector proteins in these two classes differ from each other should be interesting. In this paper, we successfully discriminated T3SS effector proteins between plant pathogenic, animal pathogenic and plant symbiotic bacteria based on feature vectors inferred computationally by Yahara et al. only from amino acid sequences. This suggests that these three classes of bacteria employ distinct T3SS effector proteins. We also hypothesized that the feature vector proposed by Yahara et al. represents protein structure, possibly protein folds defined in Structural Classification of Proteins (SCOP) database.

We present a quenched lattice QCD calculation of the alpha and beta parameters of the proton decay matrix element. The simulation is carried out using the Wilson quark action at three values of the lattice spacing in the range a[approximate]0.1-0.064 fm to study the scaling violation effect. We find only mild scaling violation when the lattice scale is determined by the nucleon mass. We obtain in the continuum limit,

We present a model-independent calculation of hadron matrix elements for all dimension-6 operators associated with baryon number violating processes using lattice QCD. The calculation is performed with the Wilson quark action in the quenched approximation at β=6/g2=6.0 on a 282×48×80 lattice. Our results cover all the matrix elements required to estimate the partial lifetimes of (proton,neutron)→(π,K,η)+(ν̅ ,e+,μ+) decay modes. We point out the necessity of disentangling two form factors that contribute to the matrix element; previous calculations did not make the separation, which led to an underestimate of the physical matrix elements. With a correct separation, we find that the matrix elements have values 3–5 times larger than the smallest estimates employed in phenomenological analyses of the nucleon decays, which could give strong constraints on several GUT models. We also find that the values of the matrix elements are comparable with the tree-level predictions of the chiral Lagrangian.

We carry out a feasibility study for the lattice QCD calculation of the neutron electric dipole moment (NEDM) in the presence of the theta term. We develop the strategy to obtain the nucleon EDM from the CP- odd electromagnetic form factor F-3 at small theta, in which NEDM is given by lim(q2 -> 0 theta)F(3)(q(2))/(2m(N)), where q is the momentum transfer and m(N) is the nucleon mass. We first derive a formula which relates F-3, a matrix element of the electromagnetic current between nucleon states, with vacuum expectation values of nucleons and/ or the current. In the expansion of theta, the parity-odd part of the nucleon- current- nucleon three-point function contains contributions not only from the parity-odd form factors but also from the parity-even form factors multiplied by the parity-odd part of the nucleon two- point function, and, therefore, the latter contribution must be subtracted to extract F-3. We then perform an explicit lattice calculation employing the domain- wall quark action with the renormalization group improved gauge action in quenched QCD at a(-1) similar or equal to 2 GeV on a 16(3) x 32 x 16 lattice. At the quark mass m(f)a = 0: 03, corresponding to m(pi)/m(rho) similar or equal to 0:63, we accumulate 730 configurations, which allow us to extract the parityodd part in both two- and three- point functions. Employing two different Dirac gamma matrix projections, we show that a consistent value for F-3 cannot be obtained without the subtraction described above. We obtain F-3(q(2) similar or equal to 0:58 GeV2)/(2m(N))= -0:024(5) e . fm for the neutron and F-3(q(2) similar or equal to 0: 58 GeV2)/(2mN) = 0:021(6)e . fm for the proton.

Carbon vacancies (VC) are typical intrinsic defects in silicon carbides (SiC) and so far have been observed only in the form of positively charged states in p-type or semi-insulating SiC. Here, we present electron-paramagnetic-resonance (EPR) and photoinduced EPR (photo-EPR) observations of their negatively charged state (V<sub>C</sub><sup>-</sup>) in n-type 4H-SiC. This EPR center (called HEI1) is characterized by an electron spin of 1/2 in a Si-Si antibonding state of VC. First-principles calculations confirm that the HEI1 center arises from V<sub>C</sub><sup>-</sup> at hexagonal sites. The HEI1 spectrum shows a transition between C1h and C3v symmetries due to a fast reorientation effect reflected in the nature of this defect. The photo-EPR data suggest that V<sub>C</sub><sup>2-</sup> is the dominant form of VC when the Fermi level lies 1.1 eV below the conduction band.

The entanglement entropy (von Neumann entropy) has been used to characterize the complexity of many-body ground states in strongly correlated systems. In this paper, we try to establish a connection between the lower bound of the von Neumann entropy and the Berry phase defined for quantum ground states. As an example, a family of translational invariant lattice free fermion systems with two bands separated by a finite gap is investigated. We argue that, for one-dimensional (1D) cases, when the Berry phase (Zak's phase) of the occupied band is equal to pi×(odd integer) and when the ground state respects a discrete unitary particle-hole symmetry (chiral symmetry), the entanglement entropy in the thermodynamic limit is at least larger than ln 2 (per boundary), i.e., the entanglement entropy that corresponds to a maximally entangled pair of two qubits. We also discuss how this lower bound is related to vanishing of the expectation value of a certain nonlocal operator which creates a kink in 1D systems.

High-multiplicity proton–proton collisions at the LHC may exhibit collective phenomena such as elliptic flow. We study this issue using DIPSY, a brand-new Monte Carlo event generator which features almost-NLO BFKL dynamics and describes the transverse shape of the proton including all fluctuations. We predict the eccentricity of the collision as a function of the multiplicity and estimate the magnitude of elliptic flow. We suggest that flow can be signaled by a sign change in the four-particle azimuthal correlation.

The transverse acoustic excitation modes were detected by inelastic x-ray scattering in liquid Ga in the Q range above 9  nm-1 although liquid Ga is mostly described by a hard-sphere liquid. An ab initio molecular dynamics simulation clearly supports this finding. From the detailed analysis for the S(Q, ω) spectra with a good statistic quality, the lifetime of 0.5 ps and the propagating length of 0.4–0.5 nm can be estimated for the transverse acoustic phonon modes, which may correspond to the lifetime and size of cages formed instantaneously in liquid Ga.

A time-resolved photoelectron imaging using a femtosecond ultraviolet (UV) laser and a vacuum UV freeelectron laser is presented. Ultrafast internal conversion and intersystem crossing in pyrazine in a supersonic molecular beam were clearly observed in the time profiles of photoioinzation intensity and time-dependent photoelectron images.

This research explores how translanguaging (Garcí & Li, 2014) and trans-semiotizing, approaches can facilitate students' expansion of their communicative repertoires to gradually make new ways of speaking, writing, and unfamiliar registers their own (Lin, 2012, 2017, 2019; He, Lai & Lin, 2017). Drawing on the sociocultural and social-semiotic perspectives, the study investigates meaning making in a multilingual CLIL classroom through fine-grained analysis of a series of lesson observation videos, teaching materials and sample student works collected during a school-university collaborative project on building up the CLIL capacity of teachers and South Asian minoritized students in Hong Kong. The results of this study shed light on how teachers design spaces for translanguaging and trans-semiotizing (Lin, 2019; Lin, Wu & Lemke, 2020) and spaces for target language and register use in the different stages of a curriculum genre (Rothery, 1996). The Multimodalities-Extextualization Cycle (MEC) is proposed and discussed as a heuristic curriculum genre for CLIL education (Lin 2015b, 2016). The study concludes by discussing theoretical and pedagogical implications and providing implementation suggestions for CLIL curriculum and teacher professional development (He & Lin, 2018; Lo, 2020).
