Knowledge on dynamic interactions in microbiota is pivotal for understanding the role of bacteria in the gut. We herein present comprehensive dynamic models of the horse cecal microbiota, which include short-chained fatty acids, carbohydrate metabolic networks, and taxonomy. Dynamic models were derived from time-series data in a crossover experiment in which four cecum-cannulated horses were fed a starch-rich diet of hay supplemented with barley (starch intake 2 g kg–1 body weight per day) and a fiber-rich diet of only hay. Cecal contents were sampled via the cannula each h for 24 h for both diets. We observed marked differences in the microbial dynamic interaction patterns for Fibrobacter succinogenes, Lachnospiraceae, Streptococcus, Treponema, Anaerostipes, and Anaerovibrio between the two diet groups. Fluctuations and microbiota interactions were the most pronounced for the starch rich diet, with Streptococcus spp. and Anaerovibrio spp. showing the largest fluctuations. Shotgun metagenome sequencing revealed that diet differences may be explained by modular switches in metabolic cross-feeding between microbial consortia in which fermentation is linked to sugar alcohols and amino sugars for the starch-rich diet and monosaccharides for the fiber-rich diet. In conclusion, diet may not only affect the composition of the cecal microbiota, but also dynamic interactions and metabolic cross-feeding.

ボローニャ・プロセスは、一つの欧州高等教育圏を築くという文脈をもち、1998年および1999年以降いろいろな変化をもたらしてきた。これらはとくに、生涯学習社会を背景とする教育・学習文化の変化と、構造(卒業証書から学士課程や修士課程へ)の変化が含まれている。ボローニャ・プロセスでは「21世紀高等教育に向けた変革のための欧州協議事項」の決議や勧告が、受け入れられもっと先に進められている。この欧州協議事項は、1997年のパレルモにおけるフォーラムの成果である。パレルモ・フォーラムは、「欧州大学学長会議(CRE)」(現、「欧州総合大学協会(EUA)」)と「ユネスコCEPES(ユネスコ欧州高等教育センター)」が、1998年のユネスコ世界会議「21世紀の高等教育 : その未来図と対策」の準備のために共催したものである。「欧州高等教育スタッフ・ディベロップメント・ネットワーク(ENSDHE)」を1985年よりコーディネートしてきた、ユネスコCEPESは、ユネスコ世界会議開催中に国際パネルディスカッション「アカデミック・スタッフ開発:継続的使命」を実施した。筆者は、その進行過程にドイツ代表のコーディネーターとして関わると同時に、「欧州高等教育スタッフ・ディベロップメント・ネットワーク」の代表として、この国際パネルディスカッションに参加した。筆者が行ってきた、教授中心から学習中心の教授法への転換および東西欧州のアカデミックスタッフ・ディベロップメント(ASD:日本のFDにあたる、以下FD)に関する比較研究は、ユネスコ世界会議に備えてであった。(Berendt 1998, 1999)本論は、まず全般的な概論を説明した後、学生の学習に関する研究に基づいたFDがどのように始まり、筆者がFDにどのようにかかわってきたか述べる。次に、1970年から1998年にいたる欧州とドイツにおけるFDに関する画期的な出来事を説明するが、ここでは、ドイツのFDが欧州を背景として展開されていることが示されるであろう。1999年以降については、ドイツにおけるFDブームを論じ、筆者の実践から構想事例(「動機づけやトレーニング方法、ベルリン自由大学とアレッポ大学(シリアの共同プロジェクト) について述べる。これらの構想は、かなり多くの大学教員をFDワークショップやFD活動へ参加するよう動機づけられることを証明した。特別な節として次に、45力国の担当大臣によるロンドン・コミュニケ欧州高等教育圏をめざして」(2007年)に応じるヨーロッパと特にドイツにおけるFDの最近の発展や展望を取り扱う。 FDは質保証の中核的要素とみなされている。最後の節は、日独のFD共同を継続するためのいくつかの結論をまとめている。そこには行動計画や更なる議論をするための一般的な問題が含まれる。また、AHD(ドイツ大学教授法研究協会)認定委員会(AHD-AKKO)に関する情報や、2000年から2007年までに評価認定されたワークショップやモジュール、プログラムに関する情報も取り扱っている。

Neutron imaging is a useful method for studying the water distribution of intact plants, due to the strong interaction of neutrons with hydrogen. This interaction provides high image contrast, even in the presence of small quantities of water. Moreover, the combination of neutron imaging with low-contrast tracer D_2O enables direct visualization of water flow and calculation of water flow rates at the tissue level in plants, at high resolution. This article introduces these two visualization methods, and reports our most recent experimental results using these methods.

The existing weight of evidence suggests that financial structure (the classification of a financial system as bank-based versus market-based) is irrelevant for economic growth. This contradicts the common belief that the institutional structure of a financial system matters. We re-examine this issue using a novel dataset covering 69 countries over 1989-2011 in a Bayesian framework. Our results are conformable to the belief - a market-based system is relevant - with sizable economic effects for the high-income but not for the middle-and-low-income countries. Our findings provide a counterexample to the weight of evidence. We also identify a regime shift in 2008.

Acute Kawasaki disease (KD) is diagnosed and treated by pediatricians, but decades later, these individuals are presenting to adult cardiologists with a variety of cardiovascular sequelae, including myocardial ischemia and infarction, congestive heart failure secondary to myocardial fibrosis, and claudication because of vascular insufficiency from thrombosed peripheral arteries. There are no clinical trials to guide management, interventions, and medical therapy in this patient population. This review summarizes the emerging information regarding evaluation of the cardiovascular status of adults decades after childhood KD. (Circ J 2015; 79: 2299–2305)
