The design optimization of passive vibration control mechanisms in the accelerance domain is discussed. In this study, the fixed points theory is developed which approximately minimizes the maximum accelerance in the frequency domain by equally adjusting the accelerance of two fixed points. This design method is applied to the dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) and the passive gyroscopic damper (PGD), and thus the maximum accelerances of these mechanisms are successfully reduced. The concept of the fixed points theory is reinvestigated. The accuracy and the degree of improvement compared with the fixed points design in the compliance domain are examined. The PGD realizes relatively higher damping effects, and then the accelerance reduction of the PGD by the new design method is considerably larger than that of the DVA with a moderate mass ratio.

Infrared emissivity of cold rolled steel sheets around 100℃ is affected with its metal composition, surface roughness, measuring wave lenghth, etc. On these elements, the effect of surface roughness has not yet been fully clarified because of the reason of itsp said small effect on measured emissivity. In this paper, the effect of surface roughness described as surface inclinationan for measuring wave length on infrared emissivity has been studied and the variance level is shown. Infrared emissivity for 2, 5, 10 μm wave length and surface roughness measuring data has been obtained for 7 pieces of cold rolled steel sheets. Modified Paulmier's erissivity model for surface roughness variance by adding wave length term has been obtained and comparison of the model with the measurement values is shown here.

Optical (far infrared) and thermal properties of a copper nanostrip array on silicon substrate were investigated. It acted as a coupler between the radiation and heat on the surface as non-radiative components (phonon or plasmon polariton at the surface), aiming to enhance outward heat flux from the surface as a cooling device via radiation heat transfer. The emission spectrum of the heat radiation was controlled by the nanostrip array that was designed as the local plasmon and phonon resonant conditions. In the experiment, it generated the temperature gradient of 1.3K across the substrate thickness (0.5mm) when the substrate was contacted on the heater (42℃) in the atmosphere at 26℃.

This paper describes new mechanisms, principle, control methods, computer simulation and experimental results of the second version of an all-direction steering-type mobile robot which has a spherical monowheel. Basic simulation results of straight running and rotation coincide with experimental results of the robot, and these results clarified, firstly, relationships between center of gravity and running ability of the robot, and secondly, the relationships between the robot's rotational angle and friction torque of the spherical wheel with the ground. Furthermore, it was confirmed experimentally that the new robot has high maneuverability, such as omnidirectional travel with zero-turning-radius rotation on any kind of surface. Therefore, it is expected that the spherical-wheeled robot developed here can be applicable as a safe personal service robot that can work with human beings in a limited space.

Recently, the concept of Mizen Boushi (reliability problem prevention) has been applied in automotive development as a tool to refine drawings to the greatest completion possible by the prototype stage. In this point of view, we are promoting a quality innovation process, "GD^3" that means "Good Design", "Good Discussion" and "Good Design Review". The process utilizes creative FMEA, FTA and a System Design Review. These tools focus attention on the many potential problems that could occur due to a change in design or environment. The System Design Review is especially useful to examine potential failure modes, root causes, part drawings and prototype part designs. This is followed by a Design Review Based on Failure Mode (DRBFM method for short), as a tool to guide discussion. In this way, it is possible to generate the best approach to handling design, evaluation, and production concerns. This paper will introduce some of the specific ways that this creative process is currently used in development as a tool to prevent reliability problems.

This paper propose the concept of hidden problem visualization and measures method in design stage with system DRBFM (Design Review Based on Failure Mode). The potential problem in the design stage involves unnoticed problems and misunderstood problems. The unnoticed problem can be visualized by the work flow of system DRBFM which takes into account the hierarchical structure of products. The misunderstood problems is also visualized by discussions in system DRBFM, containing the collation of concerning design with Design Regulation and the verification by Professional adviser based on Attention in operation. Afterwards, the total of misunderstanding problems reflects in improvement of Attention in operation. By the above concept, system DRBFM can posess two functions. The one is as for the useful tool of OJT (On the Job Training) which educates designer who has misunderstood or oversighted immediately by Professional adviser. The other is the construction of precationary measures organization with system DRBFM, Professional adviser, Design Regulation and its Attention in operation. To display the use of thease functions, the proposed concept is applied to design change of hair drier. The application example can display the role of all part of system DRBFM intelligibly.

The concept of Mizen Boushi(reliability problem prevention) has been applied in automotive development. Recently, we are promoting a quality innovation process, "GD3" that means "Good Design", "Good Discussion" and "Good Design Review". In the first paper, it was presented to utilize a System Design Review during development, in which we discuss potential failure modes, root causes and examine parts drawing and prototype parts design with the DRBFM(Design Review Based on Failure Mode) method. This paper will introduce that we completed the System DRBFM as a universal Mizen Boushi method, which can be utilized for discussions from a complex/complicated system to elements with hierarchy block diagrams of product and management.

To clarify the seizure resistance of stainless steel balls of which the surface layer was thermally diffused after being Sn-plated, a four-ball test was carried out with grease lubrication. From the tests, the following results were obtained. The diameter of the wear scar of the ball lubricated with the grease containing a molybdenum disulfide additive was smaller than that of the ball lubricated with the grease without the additive, and the diameter of the wear scar increased with increasing concentration of the additive. The load at the incipient stage of seizure of the ball of which the diffused surface layer was about 6 μm thick was 2〜4 times larger than that of the ball without the diffused surface layer. Further, it was found that the seizure resistance of the balls could be estimated from the critical surface temperature and that the critical temperature increased with increasing concentration of the additive.

Mechanical paradox planetary gears are suitable for power transmissions of current robots, such as space manipulators, which drive large-inertia loads, because the gears offer high reduction ratio, small size, light weight and high reliability. However, mechanical paradox planetary gears are subject to a drawback in that their efficiencies are lower than those of conventional planetary gears. The efficiencies of mechanical paradox planetary gears are hence theoretically analyzed and evaluated by defining the tooth number modification of a planet gear to deal with all the possible combinations of tooth numbers. The following results are obtained : the efficiencies are greatly influenced by the efficiencies of the planet and internal gear pairs ; the maximum efficiencies are minimally influenced by the reduction ratio, and they are obtained when the factors of the contact ratio of the gear pairs are approximately equal ; the maximum efficiency is approximately 78% if the tooth surface friction coefficients are 0.1.

At present, many products are demanded both facilities and comforts. It is necessary for realizing comforts to measure human sensitivities. Therefore, many various sensory evaluation methods are proposed. Scheffe's paired comparison is one of these sensory evaluation methods, and is used widely. Especially, Nakaya's method, that is developed based on Schffe's paired comparison, evaluates human sensitivities and enables to add a relative score to the samples. However, the conventional Nakaya's method can separate the main effects, differences among individuals and combination effects. If there will be other factors that have an effect on the samples' evaluation, the effects will be neglected in Nakaya's method. Therefore the main effect tends to be hard to be detected by Nakaya's method. In this paper, we propose a new sensory evaluation method that enables to separate multiple effects. As this new method enables separate many effects, the relative error variance value is smaller, and it will make us to search factors easily and correctly that affect human sensitivities. This new method is applied to the loudspeakers' psycho-acoustic evaluation, and it is clarified this new method is useful for sensory evaluation when the difference is small and when there are a few panelists.

This paper examines the feasibility of Direct Yaw-moment Control (DYC) in the context of lane keeping system. The DYC, which is generated by differential traction force distribution, is designed with, consideration of the road image information to assist the driver's steering maneuver for lane keeping task. Consequently, the controller is designed to regulate the lateral deviation based on the lane marker position acquired via CCD camera with on-board image processing system. The effectiveness of the proposed control system was verified by actual driving test with micro electric vehicle equipped with two independent in-wheel-motors for generating DYC.

In this paper, dynamic behavior of golf club shafts before impact is analyzed. Firstly, we have established the measuring system of bending stiffness distribution of the shafts. Then we measure bending strain of the shafts on swinging. We model the shaft as a cantilever beam and we calculate deflection of the shaft before impact with data of bending stiffness distribution and data of bending strain. Additionally, we estimate "Kick Point" of golf shafts. We calculate changing curvature of shafts before impact, so that we make clear which part of shafts are bended and changed curvature exceedingly on swinging. We have proposed the share of this changing ratio in cach a third of overall shaft and we call it "Dynamic Flexible Ratio". The resuits are summarized as follows: (1)It is possible to classify the type of golfers by comparing deflections of the shaft before impact, and to calculate velocity of golf club head and angle at the tip of shaft by deflection. (2)"Dynamic Flexible Ratio" is closely related to angle at the tip of shaft by deflection.

Our aim is to develop a microactuator to be used for endoscopic surgery. The purpose of this study was to construct cylinder-piston-type microactuators that are actuated by thermal expansion of paraffin. We use a paraffin as the material for expansion because paraffin has a large coefficient of expansion in the temperature range of 35 to 45 degrees of centigrade. For smooth actuation of the piston, we must prevent the paraffin from sticking on to the inside surface of the cylinder. Thus the paraffin is enclosed in a silastic tube. The cavity between the cylinder and the tube is filled with silicone oil for lubrication and prevention of expansion loss. The outer diameter of the actuator is 2.5mm and its length is 130mm. The actuator can generate a stroke of 8mm against a load of 1kg.

It has been already reported that EP additives used in cutting oil for hobbing exert a notable influence on hob wear. However, systematic studies on the effect of the viscosity for cutting oil and on the effect of the viscosity of base oil on action of additives are rather rare. Since there exist generally interactions between an additive and a base oil, the difference in the viscosity of base oil should affect action of an additive. Therefore, finding optimum viscosity conditions in which hob wear and finished surface roughness of gear are minimized, will be necessary for obtaining a standard for selecting or designing an appropriate base oil for additive. From this viewpoint, the effect of viscosity of base oil, moreover, the effect of additive in base oil with a variety of viscosity on hob wear and finished surface were investigated in this paper. Experiments were carried out with a single fly tool. Hob wear tends to be smaller with higher viscosity of base oil. The viscosity of base oil hardly affected finished surface roughness. Among the additives used, the chlorinated fatty acid ester added to the high viscosity base oil showed a best performance and the optimal content of chlorine was 3%.

Movable structures can change their shape because each of the components are connected by hinges. This paper discussed a mechanism design method that can relocate hinges based on a fourbar linkage mechanism. In this paper, "structural fabric" is defined as the arrangement of the hinges, and "shape" is also defined as the structural externals made from the arrangement of the hinges. By this definition, changes of the shape by the hinge's angle without changing the hinge arrangement is different from changes in the structural fabric. On the other hand, origami can transform by changing its structural fabric because it can freely relocate creases as hinges. However, there have been no rigid body structures that have origami-like characteristics, since there has been no mechanism that can relocate hinges. So we have designed HDRM (Hinge Double Relocation Mechanism) which can relocate hinges, and have constructed movable structures by combining the HDRM. Contents of this paper is as follows; First, a mechanism design requirement that can relocate hinges by the planar linkage have became clear. The design requirement has been expanded to spatial linkage mechanisms which have been named HRM (Hinge Relocation Mechanism), through the mechanical analysis of the spherical quadric crank chain mechanism. Next, the HDRM that relocates hinges in a singular configuration has been invented by adapting the mentioned requirement. The requirement of making movable structures from HDRM has been cleared by solving the Hamiltonian path problem. Finally, from evaluations using kinematical and interference analysis on the 3D-CAD, it has been confirmed that the constructed movable structures can change into various shapes by changing the structural fabric.

5名の男子被験者に運搬物の重量の違う7通りの歩行を伴う肩かつぎ形運搬作業を行わせ,歩幅,遊脚時間および歩行速度について,運搬物の重量の違いとの関係を明らかにした.一般的には,運搬物の重量が増せば,1歩当たりの歩幅は短かくなり,歩行速度も遅くなる.また,1歩当たりの遊脚時間値は相対的に影響を受け難いが,同一歩行距離に対する歩行数は,1歩当たりの歩幅が短かくなった分だけ多くなるので所要時間値は増加する.

The present paper describes a new design of a fluid driven microactuator which comprises a planar piston, a four-way control valve, and a mechanical feedback system that controls the output in accordance with an input displacement. Fabrication processes of the microactuator include bulk micromachining of two sheets of silicon substrate and their assembly by electrostatic bonding to glass plates. The output characteristics were measured supplying the compressed air. Generated output force was partially linear to supplied pressure and to valve displacement. However, the magnitude was asymmetric in terms of driven directions, which results from geometrical configuration essentially introduced by an anisotropic etching of the silicon. The position of the output shaft was sufficiently controlled with a designed magnification factor multiplied to the input displacement in both static and dynamic senses.

The aim of this paper is to invent foldable (or developable) conical shells in their axial direction. Foldable conical shells with several different types of folding patterns have newly been designed by geometrical considerations with the help of Origami concept. By using thin polypropylane sheet as well as papers, the designed conical shells with prescribed folding lines were actually manufactured, and it was verified that the shells are fully folded as expected. The designed models will make it possible to construct foldable/developable structures such as tents and dome-roof or to manufacture new types of industrial products.

This paper proposes a simulator which can depict the rotational vibration of a spur gear having any types of tooth surface deviation including both tooth profile deviations and tooth helix deviations. The developed simulator is based on a single degree of freedom motion system constructed with equivalent mass, damping and mesh stiffness of a pair of gears. The mesh stiffness is calculated considering the effect of the tooth helix deviation which brings non uniform load distribution along the contact line of a tooth pair. The dynamic load tests have been performed to verify the simulator changing both helix slope deviation of driven gear and torque. The analytical results under each operating conditions are in good agreement with experimental results. Also, the damping ratio of the test gear system is evaluated as 0.03 with measured vibration responses, which is smaller than conventional expectation value of 0.07.

Dynamics of multi-link manipulators are highly nonlinear and depend on the time varying configuration. This paper presents a method of gain scheduling which consists in designing an linear time invariant (LTI) controller for each operating point and in switching controller when the operating conditions change. Each LTI controller is designed based on LMI approach in which an optimization problem is defined as a mixed H_2/H_∞ control problem with pole placement. The performances of the force and the position controls are defined by the H_2 norm, and the robust stability according to gain scheduling is evaluated with the H_∞ norm and the pole placement of the closed-loop system. The effectiveness and the practicability of the proposed method are verified by both simulations and experiments with 2-link manipulator system.
