The characteristics of soaps prepared from waste edible oil (oils before desgarding used frying oils at home or school refectory) or soybean and rapeseed oils with different degrees of thermal oxidation were investigated. Thermal oxidation oils were prepared by heating in a fryer (National NF-F 100) at 180°C for 20 and 40 h. Waste edible oil collected from home and school was combined. Preparation method of soap, method I. Soaps from fresh and thermal oxidation oils were prepared by heating at 90°C for 3 h with mixtures of 100 g fresh or thermal oxidation oils, 25 g potassium hydroxide and 300 g water. Method II. Soaps from waste edible oil were prepared at room temperature for. 30 d with mixtures of 2500 g waste edible oil, 450 g sodium hydroxide, 2000 g water (added hot water of 500 g every third day) and one cup of left-over rice. They were stored in beakers at room temperature.Anisidine, carbonyl and peroxide values and content of oxidized fatty acids (fatty substances insoluble in petroleum ether) in soap were determined with fatty acids isolated by acidifying the mixture with hydrochloric acid.Anisidine and carbonyl values of soaps prepared from thermal oxidation oil were markedly lower than those of thermal oxidation oil. Anisidine and carbonyl values were much higher in waste edible oil soap than in waste edible oil. Oxidized fatty acid content in each soap was similar to that of thermally oxidized waste edible oils. Increase in anisidine, carbonyl and peroxide values was observed during storage.

The influences of six representative surfactants on hair and the scalp were investigated under various conditions such as : irritation, protein denaturation, sorption onto commercial hide powder or keratin powder, change in turnover time of the stratum corneum, dandruff and disintegration of the cuticle.1. Influence of surfactants on scalp.Although the cumulative irritation test, 48-hour closed patch test, and immersion test were performed to assess the irritating effects of surfactants, the results did not agree with each other. The immersion test, which makes essentially the same use of surfactants, gave results in close agreement with those for sorption of sufactants or protein denaturation by surfactants.Amounts of surfactants sorbed by hide powder.Irritation score of immersion test : r=0.671.Amounts of surfactants sorbed by keratin powder.Irritation score of immersion test : r=0.930.Per cent denaturation of OVA by surfactants.Irritation score of immersion test : r=0.880.Turnover times of the stratum corneum due to the surfactants were found to follow the order, AMT≤AGS≤L-Soap≤AP<LS≤ES.Examination of the amounts of dandruff as observed when using AMT shampoo and ES shampoo, each with a different effect on the turnover time of the stratum corneum, showed the amounts to differ remarkably according to the surfactant used.2. Influence of surfactants on hair.The extent of disintegration of cuticle by a surfactant supersonic treatment was found to have the following order : AMT≤AGS≤AP≤ES<LS<L-Soap.Based on the above results, AMT can be a good surfactant as a detergent for the hair and scalp.

Properties of N-acyl-N-methyltaurate(AMT), including surface active properties, cutaneous effects, influence on hair, and application to liquid type hair shampoo, are reviewed.It has been found that AMT exhibit considerably high safety on skin in comparison with typical surfactants. As the result of cutaneous effects, the reduction of the amounts of dandruff was observed when using AMT shampoo.In addition, AMT shows weaker action on the desintegration of hair cuticle.Consequently, AMT can be a good surfactant as a detergent for the hair and scalp(skin).On the other hand, cutaneous effects and physico-chemical properties of anionic/amphoteric surfactants mixed system, were investigated.It has been found that these physico-chemical results were in good correlation with those pbtained by cutaneous effects. The synergistic reductions in cutaneous effects were observed as well as physico-chemical results.These findings have promoted the development of hair shampoo composed of AMT.

アブラヤシの葉,パーム原油,ファイバー及び空果房の糖脂質を同定定量した。糖脂質の同定には,主にTLCのR<SUB><I>f</I></SUB>値と1-ナフトールや過塩素酸による呈色反応を利用した。定量はデンシトメータで行った。アブラヤシの葉の主な糖脂質はアシルステリルグリコシド,モノガラクトシルジグリセリド,ステリルグリコシド(SG),セレブロシド,ジガラクトシルジグリセリド及びスルホキノボシルジグリセリド(SQDG)であった。一方,パーム原油には,SGとSQDGは存在せず,またファイバーと空果房にはSQDGが存在しなかった。<BR>アブラヤシの葉とパーム原油の各糖脂質の脂肪酸組成についても検討した。飽和脂肪酸ではいずれの糖脂質もパルミチン酸が主であった。不飽和脂肪酸ではアブラヤシの葉ではリノレン酸が多いのに比べ,パーム原油ではオレイン酸が多い点に特徴があった。

Free iron could easily be chelated with phosphate moiety in biomembrane surface and reduced enzymatically by certain membrane components or non enzymatically by ascorbate.A model membrane lipid peroxidation induced by iron-adriamycin or iron-glycated peptide was discussed. Most probable active species for their lipid peroxidations could be iron oxygen complexes, such as FeV= O and Fe IV=O type compounds. Heme-compounds, hemoglobin, cytochrome P-450 and hematin could mainly act to decompose lipid hydroperoxides to their corresponding alkoxy radicals and hydroperoxy radicals, by which lipid peroxidation should be promoted.

Among the oxidation products of edible fats and oils, lipid hydroperoxides and the low-molecular-weight compounds containing short-chain aldehydes such as 4-hydroxynonenal are absorbed from the intestinal wall and carried into the internal organs with oral administration to rodents. Oral intake of lipid hydroperoxides or the low-molecular-weight compounds causes significant cytotoxic damage to the lymphoid tissues. The DNA synthesis of thymocytes is remarkably depressed and lymphocyte necrosis is observed in the thymus and intestinal Peyer's patches. In these cases, the mitogenic response to concanavalin A of splenocytes is increased. With long-term (90 d) feeding of slightly autoxidized soybean oil (peroxide value ; 150 meq/kg) in mice, the same symptoms as those mentioned above are observed. These findings indicate that oral intake of rancid oils give significant effects on immunocompetent cells and causes depression of the DNA synthesis of thymocytes, which would be one of the major cause for impairing immunocompetent systems in animals.

The solubilities of carbon dioxide in soybean oil, olive oil and linseed oil, and those of nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen in soybean oil were measured at pressures ranging from 0.2 to about 1 atm. of gases and at temperatures between 30 and 70°C. In most cases, the solubility of gases in oils follows Henry's Law, that is, the solubility of gas increases linearly as the pressure of gas increases. Generally, the solubility of gas in oils decreases as the temperature increases, except for the case of oxygen. The solubility of oxygen at 70°C is as large as about twice compared with that of 30 or 50°C. This might be due to the reason that the oil is oxidized slightly by oxygen at higher temperatures.Another expression of the solubility of gas, the Bunsen's absorption coefficient may be calculated as the Henry's Law rules in every case. These coefficients are shown in Table-2. The temperature dependence of logarithms of the Bunsen's absorption coefficients enables the calculation of the differential heats of solution of gases. These values are listed in Table-3.Although the values of the differential heat of solution of carbon dioxide in fatty oils do not vary so greatly with the kind of fatty oils, it seems that the value depends either on the molar volume or on the iodine value of the fatty oils. The theoretical considerations based on the quasi-lattice model of the solution of gas in oil suggests that the effect of variation of the molar volume of fatty oils on the differential heat of solution of gas is negligibly small, and the effect of the iodine value is predominant.In spite of the low solubility of hydrogen in fatty oil, the differential heat of solution is larger than that of other gases.The viscosities of soybean oil under vaccum or at saturation with gas at a definte pressures were also measured. When carbon dioxide is dissolved in oil, the viscosity, or the flow out time of oil, decreases lineally as the amount of dissolved gas increases. But, when nitrogen is dessolved, the flow time of oil is somewhat longer than that under vaccum, slightly exceeding experimental errors. This might be partly due to the larger differential heat of solution of nitrogen than that of carbon dioxide.

The solidification behavior of cocoa butter from the melt phase was examined during two different types of thermal treatment : simple cooling (60→29°C) and cooling/heating (60→22→30°C).Triacylglycerol composition and polymorphic modified samples were determined. The crystals formed by simple cooling were a mixture of Form V and Form VI of cocoa butter. But only the Form V could be found in crystals obtained by the cooling/heating. These crystals were filtered out and what appeared to be fat blooming of the solidified samples of residual melt was examined. The fat blooming was found in solidified fat after the filtration of simple cooling crystals less than 1 μm in size and in cooling/heating cystals 0.22 μm in size. The addition of 0.2 % of the seed crystals of cocoa butter with Form VI increased the rates of solidification and no fat blooming was observed.

This investigation was carried out to study the effect of some detergents and surfactants on the early stages of growth of radish, chinese cabbage and rice in hydroponic culture.Based on the results and the known highest levels of major anionic surfactants present in river waters, it could be estimated that these are not capable of inhibiting growth of these plants.The threshold level of toxicity on test materials for these plants was different from that of the animals tested.Plants treated with sodium chloride, soybean sauce and phosphorous-containing detergent showed better growth compered to the control.

Acylamino acid is a surfactant comprised of fatty acid and amino acids. There are several natural acylamino acids present as components in living tissuue and the research of acylamino acid started from biological interest. Acylglutamate is the first surfactant utilizing natural amino acid and is being actively sold as mild cleansing product due to its extreame mildness to the skin.Mild and environmentally gentle surfactants are eagerly being sought at present and this has led to increased demand for various acylamino acids.The properties and applications of various acylamino acids are explained and breaf introduction is made for other surfactants derived from amino acids.
