This paper reports about CubeSat that is developing at SokuUniversity. Shooting the photos of earth and transmission of our song to ground station are the main mission. The operating frequency is in the amateur communication band. A UHF (f=430MHz) band will be used for the downlink, and a VHF (f=144MHz) will be used for the uplink. We've already developed TNC (Terminal Node Controller) for downlink at ARLISS2002. Feature of the Soka University Satellite is using FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) for control equipments. Advantages of using FPGA are design flexibility, small size, high speed processing and flight proven. You can have almost any logics in FPGA. Also you can have CPU in FPGA. There are reasons why we selected it for our CubeSat.

An activated carbon with high micro and mesoporosity, as well as a high bulk density, was fabricated by activating the extrusion-molded precursor made from carbonized rice husk (RH) and beet sugar (BS) at 850℃ in CO_2. The pore structure of this RH-based activated carbon (RHAC) was analyzed in relation to the bulk density. The extrusion molding and the use of BS syrup were useful to attain those superior properties. RHAC which was first activated for 1 h was immersed again in the BS syrup and then activated in CO_2 for 2 h. This two-step activation process provided both a high bulk density (0.93 g/cm^3) and a highly textured structure (micropore volume: 0.29 cm^3/g, mesopore volume:0.19 cm^3/g, BET specific surface area: 844 m^2/g).

Less spinning soccer ball aerodynamics are studied by wind tunnel experiments. Aerodynamic force of unsteady lift and side ones acting on the ball at rest are measured and estimated flight trajectory. Well agreements of flight shift magnitude in lateral direction between observed and calculated ones are obtained. As a result, in this stage the cause of this strange behavior of less spinning soccer ball is clarified by self-excited buffeting phenomenon of irregular behavior of horseshoe-shaped vortex and longitudinal twin one, which already discovered with supper critical Re number region of smooth sphere by Taneda(1976).

For high-resolution retinal camera, we have developed an adaptive optics system using a membrane deformable mirror (DM) with electrostatic actuators. An aberration compensation algorithm is adopted in the system, which can generate appropriate control input by a linear combination of voltage templates prepared in advance, each of that forms a specific Zernike shape approximately. The nonlinear effect and strong coupling of control channels in continuous-surface DM make it difficult to form the desired mirror surface shapes. In this paper, we propose a computational method to obtain the voltage templates using genetic algorithm and grouping electrodes for reducing the number of independent voltage sources. The results show that the method can be used to obtain appropriate applied voltages for high-order Zernike shapes.

Water as well as wastes is removed from the blood of patients under dialysis treatment. If the quantity of the removed water exceeds the limit by some reasons the probability of dangerous accidents becomes high. Therefore, it is highly desired to monitor the blood status continuously during dialysis treatment. This paper presents some results of a fundamental research of measurement of water content in blood using near infrared spectroscopy and multivariate analysis for the purpose of continuous blood monitoring.

A hybrid gas bearing with water evaporation from ultra-fine porous medium is newly proposed. The proposed bearing is considered to be applied to microturbines and have mainly three advantages suitable for the applications. The first is the stability improved by water evaporation from ultra-fine porous medium. The second is the effective lubrication by liquid water at start and stop of the journal rotation. The third is the cooling effect on the high-temperature journal due to water evaporation. A preliminary experiment is conducted, and the stable start and stop of the journal rotation are confirmed.

Microvalves are the essential parts of valveless micropumps and other integrated microfiudic systems. The non moving parts (NMP) valve of which geometry is fixed is a simple and reliable valving concept. This paper proposes R type valve as the improved form of 'Tesla valve' which is one of the NMP valves, and evaluated its performance numerically. In the R type valve case, diodicity was 1.37 at Re = 500 and 14% more efficient than the optimized Tesla valve. In addition, the flow characteristics of pulsating flow in low Re regime was different from those of steady flow with the identical instantaneous Re conditions.

It is known that a dolphin swims fast and freely in water. The propulsive performance and the kinetic performance of the dolphin are one of great concern among researchers. We paid attention to the dolphin's tail flukes which has an important role to generate propulsive force. So the experiments on both the propulsive force of the outboard propulsor with the oscillating wing which is similar to the dolphin's tail flukes in shape and the velocity of a small boat equipped with the outboard propulsor were carried out. The propulsive performance of the wing was discussed compared with rectangular wings.

In order to simulate the debris impacts in geosynchronous orbit, we need the launcher that can launch the projectile under approximately 1[km/sec]. We converted a two-stage light gas gun into a powder gun. In generally, though sabot separation technique is used to launch the projectile of sphere, we can not apply its technique to a our powder gun. So we also conducted the development of new separation technique of projectile of sphere. In particular, we will show with the focus on the new separation technique.

When air pushes a more viscous fluid in two parallel plates by a syringe pump, viscous fingering pattern have been observed. Water and aqueous glycerin solutions are used as Newtonian fluids. Polyacrylamide (Separan AP30) solutions and aqueous glycerin solutions adding polyacrylamide are used as non-Newtonian fluids. It was found that it showed the bifurcation of viscous fingering to be different by a kind of solution. And, it was found that the solution concentration, gap and air pressure influenced a bifurcation pattern. Furthermore, it was not found a large bifurcation pattern in dilute Polymer solution and aqueous glycerin solutions with lower concentration. Then, tip speed of bifurcation was low.

The onset nucleate boiling and the point net vapor generation on subcooled flow boiling, focusing on liquid subcooling and liquid velocity were investigated experimentally and analytically. Experiments were conducted using a copper thin-film (35μm) and subcooled water in a range of the liquid velocity from 0.27 to 4.6m/s at 0.10MPa. The liquid subcoolings were 20,30 and 40K, respectively. Temperatures at the onset nucleate boiling obtained in the experiments increased with the liquid subcoolings and the liquid velocities. The increase in the temperature o* ONB was represented with the classical stability theory of preexisted nuclei. The measured results of the net vapor generation agreed well with the results of correlation by Saha and Zuber in the range of the present experiments. The temperature at the ONB decreased with increasing the size of surface roughness. The NVG was independent on the surface roughness.

Various veterinary techniques are applied to the animal fracture treatment. However, it seems to be significantly difficult for the clinical applicability of veterinarian treatment to the pelvis fracture of a small house pet because of slender anatomic bones. In this paper, a new fixational device for the small house pet is developed and evaluated biomechanically.

For scientific engine analyses, authors proposed a simultaneous and approximate analyses for connecting rod big end bearings, for piston pin bearings and for crank shaft main bearings. However, to save computation time for engine bearing analysis, it is better to innovate new iteration methods to introduce solutions of partial differential equations in finite width bearing theory. In this paper, some kinds of Runge-Kutta methods are proposed by using variable step methods with inherent algorithm of engine bearings, and the characteristic of variable step's Runge-Kutta methods in engine bearing analyses are clarified.

An experience-oriented safety education for both university students and staff members was attempted in Kyushu University, by introducing a practical education program for company employee designed by a training and education company. In this paper firstly the reason why such a type of education is needed for university is described. And then outline and executed result of the program, which consisted of two experience-oriented education programs and was the most suitable as the first attempt at the university, is explained: one is 'catching-into-the-roller experience' with a simulator, the other is 'combustion and explosion experience'. Finally problems to be solved to grow this program are discussed, based on the questionnaire to the participants who finished this prqgram,

Using a two-roller testing machine, the authors examined the surface durability of thermally sprayed WC-Cr-Ni cermet coating under unlubricated condition. By means of the high energy type flame spraying (Hi-HVOF) method, the coating of about 110μm in thickness was formed onto the axially ground, blasted and circumferentially ground roller specimens made of a thermally refined carbon steel or a carburized and hardened steel. The WC cermet coated roller finished to a mirror-like condition with a roughness of 0.1μmRz was mated with the carburized and hardened steel roller without coating ground to a roughness of 0.1μm〜8μmRz, and a maximum Hertzian stress of P_H=1.2GPa was applied in line contact. In the case of the thermally refined steel substrate, the life to flaking became short independent of the substrate surface finish. On the other hand, the carburized hardened steel substrate roller showed a higher durability. The effect of substrate material on the durability of thermally sprayed coating was discussed by the elastic-plastic analysis of the subsurface layer.

Chuhachi Ninomiya had succeeded quite independently in flying a powered miniature aircraft 12 years in advance of the Wright brothers' success with "Wright Flyer". The miniature aircraft had wheels but the Wright brothers' airplane did not have them. Moreover, while the Wright brothers' airplane had two propeller blades, Ninomiya's aircraft had four propeller blades. Even though Ninomiya's aircraft was a miniature model, the originality and the flight results must be recognized as a big achievement. However, Ninomiya's name never appears in the aviation history of the world, and his name is hardly known in Japan compared with the Wright brothers. In this research, his development of the miniature aircraft, the possibility of a real airplane, and the evaluation of Ninomiya by future generations were examined.

A centrifugal fan for an inner unit of an air-conditioner was designed using a system based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and numerical optimization. Commercial CFD software (STAR-CD) with an in-house automatic grid generator was used. A simulated annealing algorithm for numerical optimization was also used to minimize the noise level and to maximize fan efficiency. The predicted noise level was calculated from the relative velocities obtained by CFD. Calculations show that the optimized fan produced low noise and was more efficient than a conventional fan, demonstrating that the system can be used to design silent and highly efficient fan. A further finding was that there was a correlation between specific noise level and fan efficiency. This correlation shows that it is important for designing the fan to uniform distribution of relative velocity.

There are motor point maps as index of stimulation points to move each muscle for functional electrical stimulation (FES). However we'll usually have to search detailed motor points by trial and error when arranging electrodes since individual differences are large. In this research, we developed a system aids searching motor points of fingers and wrist muscles. It contains 12 × 10 electrodes which cover a forearm and sensors which catch movement of each finger and wrist. It chooses a pair of electrodes in order and stimulates a subject. When the response was measured, it records the response movement and the position of electrode pair. As a result, we obtained the generated motor point map.

With in this research the authors analyzed 127 traffic accident cases originating from tire bursts (blow-outs). These accidents occurred on the expressways of Gifu Pref. with in the past five years (1999-2003). Items investigated included the temperature at the time of the accident, the burst tire position and the vehicle behavior immediately after the tire burst. The results shown indicate; (1) many burst accidents occur in the high summer temperatures, (2) burst accidents usually involve passenger cars, (3) there are many accidents on fair weather days, (4) frequent accidents occur with in the temperature range of 20℃ to 25℃, (5) the number of accidents most frequently occur at a traveling speed of about 100km/h, (6) front wheel burst accidents make up more than half of the total accidents.
