The Ehime and Oita prefectures are connected by three ferry routes: Yawatahama-Beppu, Misaki-Saganoseki, and Yawatahama-Usuki. The Shikoku and Kyushu islands are linked by these routes. Each route is important in various aspects such as freight and passenger transportation. Passengers especially use these routes to ply between the Shikoku and Kyusyu islands for tourism as well as business. This study aims to investigate the travel behavior of passengers, which promotes the use of these routes.As a result of the questionnaire survey, 1,649 effective responses were obtained including 471 from the Yawatahama-Beppu route, 610 from the Misaki-Saganoseki route, and 568 from the Yawatahama-Usuki route .The results are as follows:(1)Attributes of the passengers and the actual conditions of the use of routes were aligned with each other.(2)The passengers' purposes varied with each route; for example, the Yawatahama-Beppu route was especially used for sight-seeing.(3)Based on the place of departure and the destination of passengers, the total migration between the Ehime and Oita prefectures accounted for 32.3%.

The accident between Atago and Seitokumaru has been reproduced using a ship handling simulator and 13 captains of patrol crafts of Japan Coast Guard have observed the target vessel Atago from the view point of Seitokumaru and they have answered a questionnaire on the target vessel in length, the crossing angle between Atago's course and Seitokumaru's course and on a method of a collision avoidance with Atago. Where, the overall length of Atago is 165 meters and the horizontal distance between her two masthead lights is about 10 meters. In order to investigate effects of the arrangement of the masthead lights, the target vessel is replaced by an ordinary cargo vessel which is almost same size of Atago and the same simulation has been conducted. In case of Atago, 10 captains have estimated her length to be at least 50m shorter than the real value and 10 captains have estimated the crossing angle to be at least 35 degrees larger than the real value and 8 captains have selected to pass Atago's bow.In case of the cargo vessel, 3 captains have estimated her length to be at least 50m shorter than the real value and 2 captains have estimated the crossing angle to be at least 35 degrees larger than the real value and 11 captains have selected to pass the stern of the cargo vessel.

In restricted visibility, information concerning another vessels will be scanty. So, it is more difficult to expect effective action to avoid collision than in sight of one another. Although 1972 Regulation rules conduct of vessels in restricted visibility, it is always depending upon a correct judgement of navigation officers by radar and sound signal information. In this paper, author considered characteristics of information and conduct of vessels in restricted visibility, and investigated actual cases of ship's collision. Finding are as follows. (1) Number of cases of ship's collision is not decreased. (2) Radar look-out is not appropriate. (3) Vessels do not proceed at a safe speed. (4) Action taken to avoid collision is not sufficiently put into practice according to regulation. (5) Proper use is not made in radar observation.

External forces of marine weather, such as waves, currents and wind flows, affect the course and speed of a ship under way. As a result, marine accidents, such as collisions or grounding, may occur, particularly in inshore areas. On coasts where earthquakes and tsunamis occur frequently, such as the Japanese coast, a tsunami that advances into a bay from the open sea is influenced by the submarine topography. It grows into a huge wave that could cause tremendous damage to ships under way and at anchorage. A massive earthquake occurred in the Tohoku and Kanto regions of Japan on 11 March 2011. In response, a tsunami alert, a tsunami warning and an advisory were issued for the entire Pacific coast region. This research investigates the evacuation behaviour of ships by AIS data in Tokyo bay and Osaka bay after the tsunami warning was issued. The unusual behaviour observed was attributed to the emergency evacuation of ships. In addition, the propagation direction of the tsunami was clarified by analysing the drift situation of each ship.

Certain types of automation technology for navigation supporting is widely accepted in maritime industries. Furthermore, interest in autonomous ship operation has been growing from the view point of safety requirement. Tokyo University of Marine Science And Technology (TUMSAT) has developed a semi-autonomous ship which is operated remotely using long range Wi-Fi and can autonomously operate under conditions of wireless link disconnect. Throughout the development and operation planning process, discussions have been held between TUMSAT and government authorities relating to the establishment of laws and regulations to govern the operation of remotely controlled and autonomous marine vessels. In this paper, case studies and legal issues to be solved by collaboration of legal and engineering are presented.

Future transition from traditional air traffic control to trajectory-based air traffic management is now discussed. Accurate trajectory prediction is indispensable for trajectory-based management. We developed a regression model to predict the flight time of flights bound for Tokyo international airport departing from Fukuoka airport. Aircraft are vectored to make an efficient arrival sequence to the airport in Kanto South sector. The flight time predicted by our model is the time required from the entrance of Kanto South sector to the airport. It is influenced by the decision made by controllers on the order of arrival sequence to the airport. The main repressors of our model are the modified positions of the other aircraft bound for the same runway, which are called traffic density data. The width of ninety five percent interval of prediction errors is more than three minutes narrower than that of ninety five percent interval of the original data. This shows the effectiveness of the inclusion of traffic density data as repressors, but our model still has a large prediction error, and further refinement is necessary.

In order to develop Under Water Speaker system (UWS) incorporating species specific audible properties, we examined cetacean sighting survey data collected by hydrofoil crew from four major hydrofoil sea lanes, in 2008 – 2011; “Northern Kyushu (including Busan-Iki-Tsushima routes)”, “Kagoshima”, “Izu-Oshima (including Atami routes)” and “Sado”. In “Northern Kyushu” cetaceans were tended to be frequent in offshore deeper than 100m. In “Kagoshima”, cetaceans including humpback whales were mainly observed in winter. In “Izu Oshima” it was remarkable that sperm whales occurred in winter to early spring with peak of January to March, and also it seemed to be currently increasing. Baird's beaked whales also occurred in winter in addition to regular occurrences in summer. In “Sado”, minke whales were mainly sighted in month from March to June. So as to increase accuracy in cetacean species identification, it is desire to conduct educational lecture and training for cetacean species identification.
