This paper deals with the application of the Golden Section Number to aesthetic and geometric considerations for the ship design. The Golden Section Number acts an important role in the Dynamic Symmetry, which was proposed by Hanbijji, J. (1920). In order to survey what it's role is in the planning of profile (type) of ship, a series of analysis are executed for some passenger ships in relation to the interior angles of the configuration of ship. Finally, the design procedure are certified on the basis of those analysis.

As is only too well known, the quick diving is one of the essential qualities of the presentday submarines. In this paper, first of all, the authors have made an analytical study on the diving motion of a submarine. In the next, the question may be solved as to how much degree the trim angle of the vessel does alter, when the vessel submerges with constant speed Vo, along the specified course, into the given depth of immersion D, in the duration of time T, under the regulation by a pair of horizontal rudders with a certain rudder angle. Fortunate to say, we have still on hand the underwater-performance curves based on the experimental results of the several types of submarine-models, and using them, we obtained numerical values of both the trim and rudder angles of submarine when she performs the diving motion as mentioned above. In conclusion, it is shown that, if we try to make the time duration needed T, as short as possible, the allowance in inclination of hull matters more, rather than the addition of rudder angle.

The "Argentina Maru" is the first motor passenger and cargo ship to be constructed under the special Shipbuilding Subsi〓y of the first grade gr〓nted by the Japanese Government, and this magnificent Round-the-Wor1d Liuer is wholly of Japanese construction aud materia1s. In vi〓w of these circumstances, it seems to be appropriate to make some reference to the ship ; therefore a general description of the vast design, construction, equipment, etc., is given in this paper.

This paper presents a numerical method for predicting the hydrodynamic and cavitation performance of a submerged hydrofoil. The numerical model of a hydrofoil is constructed with a hydrofoil and center and side struts. It is also taken account of the effect of the controll of flaps. The method represents a hydrofoil and struts by discrete vortices and line sources located on the camber surface of the hydrofoil and strut. The effect of the water surface is considered approximately by the image system in the present method. A three-dimensional theoretical procedure is used to calculate partial-and super-cavitation occurring on the hydrofoil surface. In order to verify the validity of the method, the lift and drag acting on the hydrofoil and the extent of the cavity occurring on the back or face surface of the hydrofoil were calculated and compared with the test results which was carried out in the cavitation tunnel of Akishima Laboratories (MITSUI ZOSEN) Inc. The comparisons show that the present method becomes a very useful tool for designing the hydrofoils of a high speed craft.

In order to make clear the corrosion resistance of the STJ (structural transition joint) which affects the reliability required for the STJ applied to the ships with long superstructures, the corrosion tests were conducted for the STJ exposed to marine atmosphere or sea water for max. 53 months, and the following results were obtained. (1) While the parts of aluminum alloy were attacked galvanically by the exposure to sea water for 53 months, the bonding strength of the STJ did not reduce, and the tensile strength and shear strength at bonds of the STJ after the exposure were beyond those of requirements described in the specification of STJ proposed by the Japanese Defense Agency. No stress corrosion cracking was found on the all specimens strained plastically by 0.2% and exposed to sea water for 53 months. (2) While the parts of aluminum alloy were slightly attacked galvanically by the exposure to marine atmosphere for 53 months, the reduction of bonding strength and stress corrosion cracking were not found in any specimens exposed to marine atmosphere. When the STJ is applied to the ships with long superstructures, the STJ is usually coated with paints. It is demonstrate that the bonding strength of the STJ has not been deteriorated even where the paints covered on the STJ are damaged extensively, and the STJ is able to be applied to the ships without any anxiety.

A prediction and analysis system for the performance of a ship in real seas is proposed and constructed, with EUT (Enhanced Unified Theory) adopted as the main calculation method. The proposed system can compute the frequency-domain response functions of the wave-induced ship motions, the distribution of the pressure and global wave loads, the relative wave height, and etc. In addition, the added resistance, wave-induced steady lateral force and yaw moment can be predicted, including effects of the bow wave diffraction, the forward speed and 3-D interactions in a rational manner. By using these results and a wave spectrum representing real irregular seas, the short-term prediction of linear responses, the averaged added resistance, and the resultant speed loss of a ship in irregular waves can be calculated with the present system. Good performance of the system is demonstrated with some comparisons to experimental results and some applications to the speed correction in the speed trial and the prediction of the speed loss in actual voyages.
