In this paper, the author points out some methodological problems in historical studies of Japanese language teaching, namely, a tendency towards studies focused on particular individuals and on the Euro-American origins of teaching methods as well as hasty generalizations of research in this field. Finally, the author advocates the necessity for a joint study between scholars of history and teachers of Japanese language towards further investigations in this field and suggests some new perspectives.
