Pseudo physical contact is used for communication in virtual environments such as VRChat. We hypothesized that the pseudo physical contact could affect interpersonal impression and communication, and the interpersonal impression would be modulated by appearance of body or avatar type. To test these hypotheses, we performed a questionnaire survey for VRChat users (N=341). In results, interpersonal impression and communication difficulty were improved after the pseudo physical contact, but the avatar type did not modulate the interpersonal impression. These results suggest that the pseudo physical contact could improve the interpersonal impression and communication in virtual environments.

We feel as if a fake body is our own body by synchronicity between the fake body and the real body (illusory body ownership). The illusory body ownership can be induced to an invisible full body via the synchronous movement of only the hands and feet. We aimed to investigate whether the illusory ownership occurs to a virtual body with an elongated arm by changing position of the one of the hands, and it changes reaching behavior and/or postural stability. We found that the illusory body ownership was induced to the transformed body by synchronous movement of the hands and feet. Participants’ reaching behavior gradually changed to use the longer arm more than the normal arm during learning of the transformed body within 10 min. Postural stability did not change. These results suggest that we can have illusory ownership of the transformed body with the elongated arm, and our behavior adaptively changes to utilize the new body.

Conventional stereoscopic displays have inconsistent accommodation against convergance, which dengrades sensation of presence. We developed a stereoscopic display applying Maxwellian optics to avoid such inconsistency by realizing large depth of focus. The display was also designed to provide large field of view (about 110 degree) with the simple optics. And this display allows an operator to observe real and virtual images in focus for wide range of depth.

我々は5分間程度のVRトレーニングによって,今まで成功したことが無い技の習得を支援するけん玉トレーニングシステムである「けん玉できた!VR」を開発した.VR空間で玉の速度を遅くしてから徐々に速くしていくことにより難易度を調整した.また,玉の速度を遅くしたVR空間で,実際に熟練者がプレイした身体動作をキャプチャし,それをバーチャルなお手本として提示した.本システムの体験者1128人のうち,1087人(96.4%)がけん玉の技を習得した.

Many previous studies have reported on the transformation of perception/behavior, body image, and body schema due to the use of avatars in VR space. However, there are few previous studies on those transformations associated with the wearing of avatars with non-innate physical characteristics such as animal avatars, leaving many unexplored areas. In this study, we focused on the octopus as an example of an animal with non-native physical characteristics such as softness and structural consistency from arm to fingertip. Therefore, we developed an avatar that externally mimics the arm of an octopus, a box-shaped avatar, and a human arm-shaped avatar, and measured the movement of the right upper limb during manipulation and the sensory and cognitive changes after manipulation. The results showed that subjects felt their bodies became softer and their body image changed after manipulating the avatar that imitated an octopus arm. The possibility of behavioral change was also confirmed with the octopus avater.

We aimed to investigate whether illusory embodiment occurs in arms that stretch farther than usual arms in a virtual environment and how embodiment is acquired in different stretching methods. We realized three types of arm stretching methods: the hand extended ten times the actual movement (constant stretching), the hand extended in an accelerated manner (accelerated stretching), and the hand immediately extended to the target when the user fixed the eyes on the target and moved the hand towards the target (instant stretching). Then, we investigated sense of body ownership, sense of agency and task performance for those. We found that the illusory body ownership and sense of agency were higher in the order of constant stretching, accelerated stretching, and instant stretching. The learning effects on embodiment depended on the stretching method. Task performance was better in the order of constant, instant, and accelerated stretching. These results suggest that the illusory embodiment of the stretching arm and its learning depend on the type of stretching.

In this paper, we propose a tactile display with multiple stimulus elements that present rotational shear deformation on the skin, and describe the design of a device that applies the proposed method to the back. Shear deformation stimulation to the skin can be used to perceive force in a small device, and numerous methods have been proposed. Among them, methods that present the distribution of spatial shear stimuli are expected to be a method to reproduce skin sensations with high reality. In this study, we propose a tactile display with multiple stimulus elements that present rotational shear deformation to the skin using a rotating motor. A rotary motor is a widely used actuator that is easy to control, and can be scaled to apply to various body parts. In this paper, we design a device that can present the distribution of shear deformation stimuli in the back as an example of the application of this method. In particular, we focused on the size of the rotating tactors and the distance between the tactors among the form factors, and conducted a perception experiment. It was found that when the size of the tactor was 20mm, the direction of rotation was not perceived and the dynamic range of the intensity of the stimulus was maximized, and spatially continuous stimuli could be presented to the back if the distance between the tactors was 60mm or less.

We propose a remote transmission system of hand clapping from the audience to the performer on live video streaming. This system consists of a collection system for a clapping button and hand clapping machines. The collection system for these buttons is to count the number of clicks they receive on the related website. The hand clapping machine is a mechanical device that imitates hand clapping and works by increasing the number of the clicks to produce a clapping sound and the physical movements of hands at the shooting location. This system is intended to reproduce the simple presence of the audience at the shooting location by transmitting movement and sound of hand clapping in real-time. We consider and evaluate this system by observing the behavior and the evaluation of the performer and audience at performances where this system is used.

This paper reports detection threshold of human hairy skin when a vibration is presented on a skin via the hair human has. This vibration is provided from a tip of an instrument which travels horizontally against the human skin also the tip holds the hair. And the stimulation point is the middle of hair on the back of human finger, then the instrument does not contact with the surface of the skin directly. Presented stimulations have any frequency and amplitude, we measured threshold this vibration is detected. After some tentative experiments with three persons, the detection thresholds of human hairy skin represent a curve similar to the threshold curve of Patinian. This result has a suggestion that the stimulation infects Patinian capsule.

Receiving tactile information from a slave-robot is a necessary component of telexistence with haptic display, but there are few tactile sensors that can measure the distribution of three-dimensional force vectors on a surface. For this reason, we developed a sensor that provides three-dimensional force distribution by detecting movement vectors in the transparent elastic body with a video camera. From a result of the experiment, it turned out this approach is effective.
