【Objective】The purpose of this study is to reveal certain characteristics of alcohol-dependent patients who attend alcoholic self-help groups in Okinawa in relation to their suicidal tendency. 【Subjects & Method】In August and September 2009, anonymous questionnaires were given to 128 alcohol-dependent patients who were attending alcoholic self-help groups in Okinawa. The questionnaires inquired as to their thoughts and attitudes towards suicide. 【Results】In the course of the study, 101 questionnaires were collected (78.9% of collection rate). After invalid responses were removed, 97 valid responses were used for this analysis (response rate of 75.8%). Of the subjects, 85 (87.6%) were male, and 12 (12.4%) were female. The average age of each subject was 52 (standard deviation of 11.2 years). In this study, 58 subjects (59.8%) had suicidal thoughts, and 31 subjects (32.0%) had actually attempted suicide. There was a correlation between male subjects' experiences in suicide attempts and their responses to the following matters: their age, whether or not they started to drink in their teen years, their age when they were initially diagnosed as alcoholics, and their attendance record at self-help groups. No statistical significance was observed in male subject's responses to the following matters: their marital status, whether or not they are living with anyone, how long they are abstaining from alcohol, and whether or not they started to consume alcohol again. 【Conclusion】The male subjects who had attempted suicide were; young, started to drink in their teens, diagnosed as alcoholics at a young age, and only sporadically attended self-help group sessions. Comparing our survey results to the nation-wide survey results, alcohol-dependent patients who attend alcoholic selfhelp groups in Okinawa had higher rates of experiencing suicidal thoughts and attempts.
